3 Message from the Chairman Foreword The Indian Green Buiding Moement in India stands ta today with more than 4,000 buiding projects, equiaent to 4.50 biion sq ft of green space being deeoped, as per arious IGBC Ratings. It is time to understand the experience of occupants in green buidings through a detaied study. The Word Green Buiding Counci s (WGBC) goba campaign, Better Paces for Peope, has come as an exceent opportunity to assess the experience of peope in green buidings. We are gratefu to WGBC for haing aocated this prestigious assignment to IGBC, for buidings in India. The questionnaire surey and ideo shoot in arious IGBC-certified buidings, as part of this WGBC project, reaffirm the fact that the Webeing of its occupants is in a green buidings. The resuts of the surey make it abundanty cear that access to cean, heathy, day-it and comfortabe spaces hae positie psychoogica and physioogica impact. We sha continue working with WGBC in taking forward this initiatie, thereby eading to the creation of better paces for our peope. We are in need of Smart buidings with Smart Peope. Peope are the most auabe resource in organizations. The saary and wage bi of peope working in buidings is one of the major costs of any organization. We focus on renta of buidings ony! We need to map out the Productiity increase benefits of occupying a buiding and aso take it into account, in our cacuations. Weness resuts in fewer sick days and resuts in a motiated work force. This is besides the energy efficiency of the buiding, resuting in ower OPEX for the owner/ operator. It is the duty of an empoyer to care for the webeing of their empoyees and proide a heathy and comfortabe workpace. Occupant satisfaction shoud be measured. A sma increase in indiidua productiity ead to significant gains for an organization. With this background, this study by IGBC has come at the right time. We are currenty deiberating on the weness standards in India, suited to our ifestyes and the Nationa context. 5 ABOUT BETTER PLACES FOR PEOPLE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Better Paces for Peope aims to acceerate the demand and the suppy of buidings that support peope in iing heathier, happier ies by raising awareness of how buidings impact peope, and by presenting the business case for action. WordGBC and its partner organisations wi engage and coaborate with buiding occupants, deeopers and andords, inestors, and rea estate agents and adisors through a wide range of actiities to hep drie action on the ground. Key actiities incude: Proiding further eidence on the ink between good design and positie outcomes. Creating toos and guidance on how to coect heath and webeing data for buiding types beyond offices. Estabishing a network for organisations to exchange essons earned and share best practice. Supporting Green Buiding Councis in the coection of consistent data at nationa ees. The Green Buiding moement in India triggered when CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre (IGBC Head Quarters) buiding in Hyderabad was awarded with the first Patinum rated green buiding rating in India. Since then, Green Buiding moement in India has gained tremendous impetus oer the years. Today, more than 4000 green buiding projects are impementing arious green strategies. As a next chapter of the green buiding moement in India, it is ita to understand the occupant experience on iing in green buidings. The study aims to highight the positie impacts of green buiding on heath & webeing of the occupants. This report is part of WGBC's initiatie on 'Better Paces for Peope' that aims to create a word in which buidings support heathier and happier ies for those who occupy them. WGBC has entrusted IGBC to conduct a study on the webeing aspect in IGBC rated green buidings. 25 buidings hae been seected from 7 major cities of India. The questionnaire was designed to capture user's perception and experience on the buit enironment they occupy. The study indicates that green buidings hae supported heathier and happier iing in seera ways. Various attributes such as thermay comfortabe enironment, optimum iumination & noise ees, greenery within the buit enironment, ergonomicay designed spaces, hae significanty contributed in proiding a comfortabe working enironment to the users occupying them. Based on the study, the report further attempts to proide ideas for improement in the buit enironment. Foowing are few highights of the report: 80% occupants are thermay comfortabe throughout the year on account of the good design and proper operation of the faciities Peope in green buidings accord tremendous importance to fitness actiities. 84% occupants actiey utiise sports and meditation faciities proided by their faciity Due to good façade design, 89% occupants are happy with the isua enironment and do not hae probem of gare. 78% occupants are satisfied with the acoustica design of their faciity. Educating the occupants of green buidings is extremey important. 93% occupants were found to be we educated on the arious benefits of eco-friendy practices. The objectie of the study was to understand measures that woud enhance heath & webeing in buidings. More and more stakehoders are reaising the importance of green buidings. The study woud further strengthen the area of webeing and woud guide upcoming faciities to be heathy and add to the webeing of peope. 1 2

6 ATTRIBUTE CONSIDERED ATTRIBUTE CONSIDERED Therma Comfort : The occupants perception of the therma enironment and their preference faciitates the buiding managers to proide a widey acceptabe therma enironment. A better contro oer therma enironment reduces stress and hep in focusing on actiities at work. Fitness : Fitness is an essentia component of the webeing. Fitness fosters heathy iing and contributes significanty to emotiona and inteectua heath. Accessibiity to basic fitness amenities in buidings encourage occupants to actiey participate in fitness reated actiities. Visua Comfort : Lighting is one of the component of comfort and pays major roe in the webeing of the occupant. Optimum ux ees reduce strain in eyes and improe concentration of occupant. Dayight aso contributes significanty to the heath and webeing. Poor isibiity, gare, ficker and ack of contro of the isua enironment can affect task performance. Green Transit : Green transit encourages occupants to adopt practices such as waking, cycing, using pubic transport, carpooing and using eectric ehices. This not ony heps to combat enironmenta concerns but aso enabing them to be fit which stimuates creatiity and improes productiity. Acoustic Comfort : Noise distractions affect concentration and surrounding enironment. The workpace ayout is key in maintaining the acoustica comfort, whie aowing the occupants to work and communicate efficienty and remain stress free. Ergonomics : Ergonomicay designed furniture and office ayout reduces the impact that office work has on the body, promotes heathy & correct body posture. Greenery : Greenery and natura habitat has positie impacts on peope. The growing scientific understanding of biophiic design and its impact on menta heath motiates designers to design and construct spaces haing ampe greenery. Sanitation and Hygiene : Hygiene and ceaniness is essentia in day to day aspects of ife. Ofactory satisfaction and maintenance of a cean workpace promotes heathy iing. A workpace with unpeasant sme and bad hygienic conditions can effect peopes mood, work performance and behaior. 7 THERMAL COMFORT THERMAL COMFORT Introduction Therma comfort is defined by ASHRAE as a condition of mind in which satisfaction is expressed 1 with the therma enironment. Therma comfort depends on parameters such as air temperature, air eocity, reatie humidity, mean radiant temperature, metaboic rate and cothing insuation. Therma comfort has been an important eement of green buidings and is we addressed in terms of design, construction and operation. A good buiding design ensures a thermay comfortabe enironment. The ight shoud be of the right intensity so that eyes do not strain if it is too dark or bright. Thus maintaining optimum iuminance at the workpace with the use of artificia ighting or dayight is ery essentia. Gare from sunight can aso cause strain in eyes. Intensity of sound is measured in decibe. 2 Sound beyond 65 decibe (for commercia spaces) is considered as noise. Noise eads to disturbance and distress. This can be due to a neighbouring conersation, nearby traffic noise, poor ducting design or equipment noise.
