Between April 1, 2016 and May 31, 2016 Equestrian Canada welcomed coaches and instructors to participate in a National Coaching Survey. The National Coaching Survey garnered 788 respondents and addressed topics like the NCCP, paraequestrian inclusion, affiliation fees, transfer of qualifications, equestrian development programs and coaching program services. The National Coaching Survey Report is the report on data and information collected from respondents. This report will help EC with programming and services knowledge and information to help decision making activities moving forward and will be available as a resource for Provincial/Territorial Sport Organizations. EC is committed to providing a best in class coaching program. We hope you find the survey results interesting and useful. 3

How familiar are you with the NCCP and the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and its programs and services? 667 surveyed 121 skipped question 10 Very Familiar 16.8% Familiar 55.0% Not Familiar 26.8% What is the CAC and the NCCP? 1.3% Not Familiar Very Familiar Familiar What is the CAC and the NCCP? Often How often do you use the Locker to check your coaching/instructing certifications? 669 surveyed 119 skipped question 11 Often 7.5% Not Often 45.0% Never 47.5% Never Not Often 11

Why did you choose to become NCCP certified? 541 surveyed 247 skipped question 12 Value & Credibility Believe strongly in a standardized program for quality of education and coaching in our sport wanted to be part of the program Standards & Safety To offer my students the highest standard. To offer parents peace of mind and to offer myself insurability Career Opportunity Wanted coaching to be my profession Insurance Benefits Decrease in cost of coaching insurance if certified Lifelong Learning Wanted to further my education in the sport 12

How valuable is your NCCP certification to your identity and brand as an equestrian coach/instructor? 663 surveyed 125 skipped question 13 Valuable 36.0% Neutral 41.3% Not valuable 22.6% Not Valuable Neutral Valuable Unfortunately, it adds very little to my resume. No one hires me because of my EC certification. They usually hire people they see in the show ring, or who own the barn they board their horse at. Unfortunately, many clients don't look to this in finding a coach. Most people go one word of mouth and performance. The public doesn t really understand the certification process. They take lessons from anyone. Almost no one I speak with knows anything about NCCP certification but many equestrians do recognize the EC coaching certification. They also look at a coach level vs. an instructor level differently and consider a coach to be delivering a higher level of instruction. 13

Are you familiar with the NCCP Transfer of Qualifications? 666 surveyed 121 skipped question 14 Are the requirements for the NCCP Transfer of Qualifications reasonable? 581 surveyed 207 skipped question 15 Have the NCCP Transfer of Qualifications been well communicated? 604 surveyed 184 skipped question 16 Yes 49.50% No 50.50% Yes 27% No 18.6% Indifferent 54.4% Yes 39.6% No 60.4% Yes Yes No Yes Indifferent No No 14

How can Equine Canada and its program partners improve the NCCP Transfer of Qualifications for you? 345 surveyed 443 skipped question 19 Simplicity of Program It should be a direct transfer Clarity on Evaluation and Certification Process By convincing me that the testers or people doing the evaluations are more qualified than the coaches or trainer Technology & Accessibility Clarity on Maintenance of Certification NCCP Alignment The webinar was very helpful and informative Stop making it so difficult to maintain certification Clarify the process of how CAC interacts with the Equine requirements for certification 16

Please provide additional feedback that may not be captured in previous questions pertaining to Equestrian Canada s NCCP. 154 surveyed 634 skipped question 20 Improved Communication Fees and Membership Content Strategy Simplicity of Program Commitment to Transparency & Consistency We need better communication The cost of becoming certified is prohibitive and opportunities to maintain certification are limited A lot of the written resources being sold by EC are either out-of-date or have many errors that should be corrected. This should be a priority for EC This certification process is very confusing Requirements change way too frequently 17

Are the Coaching program admissions/prerequisites to the program reasonable? 566 surveyed 221 skipped question 21 Are the training modules offered useful to your training and development as a coach/instructor? 562 surveyed 226 skipped question 22 Does the existing evaluation process for coach/instructor certification identify the key areas necessary for the role? 563 surveyed 225 skipped question % 32.2% 39.9% 37.7% 40.7% 34.6% No 11.3% 9.2% 4.4% 9.4% 10% 3% 8.2% 13% 3.6% Strong Agree Agree Don t Agree or Disagree Disagree Strongly Disagree Strong Agree Agree Don t Agree or Disagree Disagree Strongly Disagree Strong Agree Agree Don t Agree or Disagree Disagree Strongly Disagree 18

Are you familiar with the professional development policy and maintenance of certification requirements? 589 surveyed 199 skipped question % Percentage 19% 23.1% 5.9% Respondents Answer Very Familiar Familiar Not Familiar What is the PD Policy? 19

How satisfied are you with Equine Canada s National Coaching Program? 579 surveyed 209 skipped question 25 Percentage 4.7% 38.2% 32.1% 18.7% 6.4% I feel as a coach that there is not much of a relationship with Equine Canada I do feel that the annual membership fee to maintain my coaching status to be very high, as I don t feel that Equine Canada provides me with anything for that fee Staying current, transition process, trying to understand the changes is very cumbersome I don't really see an advantage to being certified. The program continually changes and is confusing The paperwork is a bit daunting Respondents Answer Very Satisfied Satisfied Neither Satisfied or Dissatisfied Dissatisfied Very Dissatisfied Does not impact my professional status one way or another EC is not the best lead for this program at the present time It is a good start... Would like to see it have more influence. 20

Approximately, what are the total fees you pay annually to equestrian federations related to coaching/instructing? 585 surveyed 203 skipped question % 34.4% 31.3% 18.8% $0 - $100 $300 + $200 - $300 $100 - $200 In general, are you satisfied with the services you receive with the fees you pay? 1.7% 23.2% 41% 583 surveyed 205 skipped question % 9.4% 21

How would you rate the communication and transparency of the EC National Coaching Program? 582 surveyed 206 skipped question 28 Very Good 19 Good 138 Neutral 273 Bad 106 Very Bad 46 How would you rate the promotional activities for the EC National Coaching Program? 578 surveyed 210 skipped question 29 Very Good 6 Good 124 Neutral 275 Bad 130 Very Bad 43 22

How would you improve the services provided to equestrian coaches and instructors? 270 surveyed 518 skipped question 30 Simplicity of Program Improved Communication Commitment to Transparency & Consistency Clarity on Maintenance of Certification Fees and Membership Somehow make it easier. Imagine a small business owner with no staff; we are busy people. My days are at least hours, and its often 6-7 days a week. I need this to be dead easy. Better communication and incentives to become certified Easier to understand for the new candidates coming in. No one can seem to make any sense of it, and just when we start to get it, you change it. Generally it is confusing, long and drawn out. It should be difficult to obtain, but clear to understand the steps and process. Provide more professional development options at lower costs - in reality, what DOES our annual fees provide to us, except slightly reduced insurance fees? We should get more for our coaching fees. I pay over $200 for my personal EC certification, just to be certified. I don't even compete myself any more 23

What is your level of familiarity with the principles of Long Term Equestrian Development (LTED)? 575 surveyed 213 skipped question % Very Familiar 27.3% Familiar 33.7% Somewhat Familiar 22.8% Never heard of this before! Would you be interested in further education on LTED and how it could be integrated into your coaching and instruction practice? 567 surveyed 221 skipped question 32 Yes 66.8% No 33.2% No Yes 24

What is your level of familiarity with the Learn to Ride/Drive Program? 574 surveyed 214 skipped question 33 Do you use the Learn to Ride/Drive Program in your program offerings? 562 surveyed 226 skipped question 34 Do you feel the program helps your clients to progress and improve as riders/drivers? 503 surveyed 285 skipped question 35 Yes 45.7% No 54.3% Yes 52.9% Percentage 26% 26.0% No 31.4% 16.7% No Yes No * Incentive 8% 39% Answer Very Familiar Familiar Somewhat Familiar Not Sure *I only use the program as an incentive to remain in my program 25

In your opinion, is the Learn to Ride/Drive Program valuable to equestrian development? 538 surveyed 250 skipped question 36 Yes 45.9% No 13.6% I don't know 40.5% I don t know No 26

Please provide feedback on how Equine Canada could improve the Learn to Ride/Drive Program. 207 surveyed 581 skipped question 37 Simplicity of Program Improved Communication Technology & Accessibility Commitment to Equestrian Development Fees and Membership Not sure how to integrate it? More incentives for riders to participate and look for coaches who provide it. I would like to see the rider level books more accessible on your web site as well as in local tack shops so the parents can easily purchase those books The learn to ride program is a great goal setting technique, unfortunately it is viewed more as a prerequisite to coach/instructor Parents love the program, and use it as a bench mark like swimming lessons 27

Please provide additional feedback that may not be captured in previous questions pertaining to Equine Canada s program services and satisfaction. 124 surveyed 664 skipped question 38 Keep up the good work. There is so much to do but the program offers a professional & progressive equestrian coaching program. You should be proud! Thank you for making the coaching survey available. I hope it helps improve the system. I think the Equine Canada coaching program is very important to the equestrian community. I would like for it to be more accessible to lower-income populations, as the process to become a coach is expensive. The individual interactions I had with Equine Canada were excellent. Keep up the good work. There is so much to do but the program offers a professional & progressive equestrian coaching program. You should be proud! Thank you for this opportunity to have a voice. 28

As a result of the National Coaching Survey, EC was able to respond to critical concerns related to the NCCP Transfer of Qualifications. On May 28, 2016 the transfer policy was revised to transfer coaches from certified to certified status, effectively easing the coaching requirements to remain current. The survey encouraged greater inclusion of instructors and coaches directly impacted by the program and provided them the opportunity to have their voice heard. This exercise highlighted recurring concerns and challenges. EC s certified coaches and instructors want the program to be simplified, communicated more clearly, and to commit to greater transparency and consistency within the program. Additionally, it s clear that EC must enhance the value proposition and to improve program credibility and affiliation to the program and EC for new candidates and preexisting certified instructors and coaches. In closing, EC will use the feedback from the survey to help improve programming in alignment with the EC strategic direction moving forward. Thank you for your time and continued contributions to equestrian sport, Bryan McSorley Program Manager, Education 29
