By focusing on Whanau and their wellbeing Turanga Health removes the silo delivery approach to health services. Our mission provides and allows for collaboration or integration of other services outside the core business of health, e.g. housing, social services, employment, education and training. Working Relationships The Kaiawhina / Community Health Worker will work closely with the Coordinator of Events. He/she will also work alongside other colleagues within Events team and other Health workers within the organisation. The ability to meet the needs and strategies of Te Hauora o Turanganui a Kiwa will be crucial to this role. 4 Other Requirements All employees of Te Hauora o Turanganui a Kiwa are expected to contribute to the development and vision of Te Hauora o Turanganui a Kiwa. 5 Professional Development As the business of Te Hauora o Turanganui a Kiwa develops and grows, the responsibilities and functions of positions may change. All staff should be receptive to these changes, and be able to contribute to this process effectively by: Undertaking professional development as set by your Manager. Being willing and open to new ideas, concepts and business practices Committing to the implementation process of new ideas, concepts and business practices Monitoring and recording progress of systems or situations as required by the CEO. Undertaking such other duties as the company reasonably may require to add to your professional development programme Key Results Areas The Kaiawhina / Community Health Worker will: Develop strong and effective partnerships between central government, local government and communities; Assist community organisations in the implementation and monitoring of drug and alcohol policies in communities e.g. in the District Council, clubs, marae, schools, workplaces, family/whanau settings etc; Assist community organisations in the development of community-based initiatives and policies that promote belonging/connecting opportunities and facilities for young people; Develop youth specific development initiatives; Assist in the development of specific whanau support systems for youth Work with the education, health and social service sector to develop school and community based early intervention; Co-ordinate intersectoral approaches between Health and Education to reduce drugrelated harm and manage drug incidents Contribute to workforce development and co-ordination Contribute to the development of national/regional infrastructures to support community action initiatives Formative and impact evaluation and research Work with communities and whanau to facilitate their own learning, discovery and action based responses. Assist in the maintenance of the reference group and the establishment of the action plans. Assess the needs and clarify issues for communities in Tairawhiti in relation to illicit drugs, especially methamphetamine and cannabis. This may include hui, focus groups, surveys etc with whanau, hapu, iwi, community service agencies, Councils, police and others. The consultation/ needs assessment will identify the drug related harm minimisation issues in Tairawhiti, and inform development of action plans. 6 Engage in and support the community to undertake community action on illicit drugs. This will involve implementing at least one significant strategy to meet the service objectives. This will include collaboration with a wide range of sectors (e.g. Community Boards and Councils, marae committees, social services, health providers, whanau, community groups, Police, government departments etc.) Encourage and/or facilitate workforce development opportunities for health and community workers on illicit drugs. This may involve input from other providers (e.g. SHORE/Whariki, original CAYAD providers, DHB alcohol and drug staff, community members, Police etc). Attend workforce development opportunities in drug and alcohol community action (including the history of New Zealand and its relevance to drug related harm today), health promotion, evaluation etc. There will be one or two national project workshops each year and staff are expected to attend these and the six monthly regional networking meetings. Core Competencies Knowledge: The ability to make realistic/relevant connections between your own role, the work of Te Hauora o Turanganui a Kiwa, and develop broader knowledge of the company s stakeholders. Relationship Management: The ability to support the work of Te Hauora o Turanganui a Kiwa through developing and maintaining high quality working relationships. Self Management: The ability to maintain personal health and work/life balance systems. Professionalism: The ability to demonstrate commitment to the company strategic directions and their core mission, values and objectives. Maori Awareness Communication: The ability to communicate in a way that shows sensitivity and empathy towards others, while striving to achieve desirable outcomes. Problem solving and achievement: The ability to organize and give solutions to problems/issues, ideas and information and delivering high quality work on time. Te Hauora o Turanganui a Kiwa prides themselves on honoring their commitment to the Te Tiriti O Waitangi. It is essential that all staff members of Te Hauora o Turanganui a Kiwa have an understanding of issues affecting Maori, this will also include an awareness of traditional and contemporary Maori and Iwi structures, key Maori concepts, an awareness or understanding of the Te Tiriti O Waitangi. 7 Technical Knowledge Have an immediate level of competency in computer literacy Microsoft Office Products Ability to operate company systems and calendar schedules Key Selection Criteria To be considered for this position it will be necessary for the person to demonstrate: Excellent organisational skills along with the ability to establish priorities and meeting deadlines whilst preserving the highest levels of accuracy and confidentiality. Understanding of and experience in health promotion along with demonstrating the ability to plan, co-ordinate and facilitate health and well being programmes Have an understanding of Rangatahi Health issues Demonstrate an understanding of Kaupapa Maori Services with all appropriate stakeholders A proven ability to work well with Maori communities within Maori Settings, and practices and towards Maori aspirations of Rangatahi Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Have an understanding of the structures of the Maori communities and working with Rangatahi Demonstrate the ability to form and maintain strong links and effective relationships Demonstrate experience of contributing to the development of an effective team Knowledge of Whanau, Iwi, Hapu of Te Tairawhiti o Turanganui A Kiwa Ability to relate and build effective relationships with Rangatahi Ability to do problem solving and create positive solutions to problems regarding Rangatahi Have relevant extensive experience in working with Rangatahi Qualifications Extensive experience in working with youth. Previous experience in a similar work environment, i.e working for a Maori Health Provider, working with youth at risk would also be an advantage.
