23 Customer Focus sales rep pic Goss s Wilt Goss s wilt is a bacterial disease of corn that has been rapidly spreading across the High Plains, as well as along the Texas Gulf Coast. Goss s wilt causes plant wilting and leaf blight and is responsible for the second highest number of lost bushels in the US. Weather conditions such as rain, wind and hail can damage a corn plant allowing Goss s wilt to infect the crop. Goss s wilt pathogens survive in corn residue and can be spread through weather and equipment to other fields. Crop rotation and tillage can limit the residue remaining on the soil surface and reduce the likelihood of infecting a new crop. Cleaning equipment thoroughly can also limit the spread of Goss s wilt. There are no chemical control measures available for Goss s wilt. The disease is caused by a bacteria rather than a fungus and therefore commonly used fungicides are not effective. Hybrid resistance is currently the primary method for managing Goss s wilt.
