4 FOREWORD Fruit, Vegetables and Condiments Statistics of Pakistan is an annual publication of the Economic Wing, Ministry of Food and Agriculture. It contains province-wise data on area and production of fruit, vegetables and condiments grown in Pakistan. It also includes data on imports, exports and wholesale prices of the said commodities. Data in the publication is valuable for the planners, researchers, importers and exporters. Our country has a great potential for export of fruit, vegetables and condiments. The finest quality of our fruits like mangoes, citrus and dates etc. is very popular in the world and has high demand. To boost the production and exports, efforts are being made to encourage foreign investment and expertise for processing fruits and vegetables. Different quality control measures are being adopted in compliance with WTO requirements to earn foreign exchange and to benefit the farmer community. I express my deep appreciation to the officers and staff of the Economic Wing involved in data collection and compilation of Fruit, Vegetables and Condiments Statistics of Pakistan, highly appreciated Suggestions for further improvement of the publication will be Islamabad December, 2009 (Muhammad Zia-ur-Rehman) Secretary
5 INTRODUCTION Pakistan s diverse climatic condition provides an opportunity of growing fruit, vegetables and condiments including spices in all seasons around the year in all provinces. High value fruit such as apples, mangoes, guavas, dates, citrus, kinnos, peaches and grapes are grown on thousands of hectares of land. Even small agricultural villages in Balochistan and Sindh are producing some of the world s finest fruit such as chikoos, papayas, bananas, coconuts etc. Our fruit is pulpy, juicy, vitamin-rich and fragrant. It is compatible with foreign varieties in both quality and prices. The vegetables are short duration crops, which can be grown even in small spaces. Improving vegetable productivity will put the prices of vegetables within the reach of urban and rural poor. In Pakistan, more than 36 varieties are grown on large scale comprising potatoes, gourds, tomatoes, cucumbers, lady fingers, turnips, cabbages, brinjal, cauliflowers etc. Condiments such as chillies, seeds of cumin, onions, besides dry spices are produced in large quantities in Pakistan and are exported abroad. These are popular for their freshness, taste and nutritious value. Fruit and vegetables play a significant role in Pakistan s agriculture. During to , the area under fruit, vegetables and condiments increased by 27.8, 9.3 and 8.9% respectively while production for the said items increased by 4.7, 8.9 and 22.3%. During , the area under fruit was 0.83 million hectares and 0.44 million hectares for vegetables and condiments. Fruit and vegetables including juices have a contributory share in exports. During to , the volume of exports rose from to million rupees showing an increase of 68.6%. This export was made to Asian, European and African countries. A number of new countries have been increasing with the passage of time for export of fruit and vegetables.
