1 Software Announcement May 6, 2003 IBM AIX Performance Toolbox and Performance Aide V3.1 Analyze System Performance Overview AIX Performance Toolbox (PTX) V3.1 is a comprehensive tool set that helps you view and analyze system performance in local and distributed environments. The new Jtopas application creates simplified snapshot views of overall activity for near real-time and playback analysis. Snapshot views display sorted listings of disk, processor, network, process, and other resource consumption. Additional system-level and aggregated performance metrics assist administrators with monitoring IBM pseries systems with dynamic logical partitioning configuration. 2 Description PTX is a comprehensive tool set for monitoring and analyzing system performance in local and distributed environments. In conjunction with Performance Aide, PTX enables you to view both live and recorded data. A new Java -based interface, Jtopas, focuses on prefiltering the set of performance metrics available on large-scale systems to provide simplified snapshot views of overall system activity. Jtopas accomplishes this by categorizing and reporting top resource consumption in sorted, tabular views. Near real-time reports of top disk, CPU, network, process, and other resource consumption can be displayed and played back for long-term analysis. In addition, you can create reports that display hourly or daily activity. PTX supports new and aggregated performance metrics available in AIX V5L. This function includes information for monitoring dynamic logical partitioning (DLPAR) systems. Performance Aide offers: Common agent for AIX 5.1 and AIX 5.2 Enhanced agent support for top resource collection Continuous recording of top resource and global performance data Automated configuration that requires no customer setup ASCII text reports exportable to third-party spreadsheets Continued unlimited user license for Performance Aide Legacy PTX applications, such as xmperf, 3dmon, and Jazizo, remain to provide user-customizable views of real-time and recorded data. You can use the Jazizo trend analysis interface to process top resource recordings for detailed graphical analysis. Product Positioning Affordable IBM-supported distributed performance monitoring for all pseries AIX customers. PTX provides much of the data collection and analysis function of high-end third-party solutions for a fraction of their price. Performance Aide enables distributed function with an inexpensive unlimited license. In addition, a version of that documentation is provided on the Performance Toolbox installation media. The IBM Publications Center: The Publications Center is a worldwide central repository for IBM product publications and marketing material with a catalog of 70,000 items. Extensive search facilities are provided. Payment options for orders are via credit card or customer number. A large number of publications are available online in various file formats, and they can all be downloaded free of charge. The IBM Publications Notification System messages/welcome The Publications Notification System (PNS) enables subscribers to set up profiles of interest by order number and product number. If you subscribe to PNS, you automatically receive notifications by of all new publications. You can then order or download then through the Publications Center. Limitations: Refer to the README files for any limitations. These files are located in the /usr/lpp/perfmgr/ directory. Performance Considerations: Network-saturated environments may limit monitoring capabilities of Performance Toolbox. Planning Information Packaging: The PTX/Aide V3.1 package contains the following items: IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA) and License Information (LI) multilanguage Proof of Entitlement (PoE): IPLA and LI documentation that contains information on PoE is electronic softcopy One CD-ROM and publications Security, Auditability, and Control PTX V3.1 uses the security and auditability features of the AIX operating system software. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities. Ordering Information To order a new license for one of the program products in this announcement, you must include a one-year (5771-xxx) or a three-year (5773-xxx) maintenance order to be entitled to future version or release updates of the licensed program. Not only will you be entitled to future version or release updates during the Software Maintenance contract period, but this new offering also includes a year of voice support at no additional cost. New Licenses To order the programs described in this announcement, select the appropriate 5692-A5L system number program number (SPO) feature and one-time charge (OTC) feature from the tables below. The software license for new customers of the programs in this announcement includes Software Maintenance for one year. Select the one-year or three-year program number, the appropriate feature number, and the quantity to extend coverage for your software licenses from the tables. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice and/or electronic access into the IBM support organizations. IBM includes Software Maintenance with each program acquired during the coverage period. The coverage period means the period commencing on the date you acquire the program up to the first or second anniversary date, depending on whether you acquired coverage for one or two anniversaries. The coverage period for Software Maintenance acquired in the two months preceding an anniversary date will be extended to the next applicable anniversary date. While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your IS technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. This assistance is not available to your end users. IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance.
