2 LAPEER COUNTY ROAD COMMISSION SPECIAL PROVISION for STRUCTURAL PLATE METAL BOX CULVERT REPLACEMENT BMJ/prp 1 of 2 08/18/17 a. Description. This item of work consists of all work necessary to remove existing culverts and install new structural plate box culvert, headwalls, wingwalls and related items of work. b. Materials. 1. Culvert. Lane Enterprises, Inc. Aluminum Structural Plate Box Culvert, or engineer approved equal. Structure number BC-A-60 (22-1 Span, 9-3 Rise). Full invert. AASHTO HL-93 Modified loading, or the controlling Michigan truck, whichever is greater. All related materials for culvert installation to meet manufacturer s specifications. Contact Jensen Bridge & Supply Company, Dale Chambers, Sales Manager, (810) , dalec@jensenbridge.com 2. Headwalls/Wingwalls. Lane Enterprises, Inc. Aluminum Structural Plate Welded Headwalls and Wingwalls, or engineer approved equal. 3 high headwall (welded to culvert); 3-panel anchored wingwalls. AASHTO HL-93 loading. Structural backfill material in accordance with culvert manufacturer s specifications. shall be Class 6A in accordance with Section 902 of the MDOT 2012 Standard Specifications for Construction. 4. Riprap. Heavy Riprap meeting the requirements of Section 916 of the MDOT 2012 Standard Specifications for Construction. 5. Geotextile. Section 910 of the MDOT 2012 Standard Specifications for Construction, Heavy Geotextile Liner or Geotextile Separator, as indicated on the drawings or specifications. 6. Aggregate Foundation. Section 902 of the MDOT 2012 Standard Specifications for Construction, 6A Coarse Aggregate. 7. Mulch Blankets and High Velocity Blankets. Section 917 of the MDOT 2012 Standard Specifications for Construction. 8. Geogrid. Tensar TX190L c. Construction. Remove existing culverts in accordance with Section 203 if the MDOT 2012 Standard Specifications for Construction. Setup bypass pumping and dewatering as required to complete the Work. Assemble box culvert and appurtenances in accordance with the manufacturer s shop drawings and instructions. Install concrete footings, box culvert with full invert, headwall and wingwalls in accordance with the manufacturer s requirements and Section 401 of the MDOT 2012 Standard Specifications for Construction, where the manufacturer s specifications do not provide sufficient detail. Any joints in the pipe shall be wrapped with geotextile blanket as specified in Section 401. Line the back side of headwalls and wingwalls with geotextile separator prior to backfill. 3 Backfill around and above structure in accordance with manufacturer s specifications. Backfill above the structure shall be compacted to not less than 95% of the maximum unit weight. Line entire trench with geotextile separator prior to backfill. All work shall be in accordance with the Lapeer County Road Commission Policy Public Utilities Within the Right-of-Way and the National Corrugated Steel Pipe Association s Installation Manual for Corrugated Steel Pipe and Structural Plate, current edition. Restore slopes (1:2 slope or steeper) and channel bottom with high velocity blankets and restore slopes of less than 1:2 with mulch blankets meeting the requirements of Section 816 of the MDOT 2012 Standard Specifications for Construction. d. Submittals. Submit the following shop drawings, calculations, product data or other information a minimum of 30-days prior to performing Work on the subject culvert: 1. Culvert. Shop drawings, structural calculations and installation instructions detailing site specific instructions for handling, assembling and installing structure. The culvert structure designer shall provide load rating calculations, the cost of which shall be included in the lump sum price bid for this item of Work. The calculations shall show that posting load limits is not necessary for one-unit, 2-unit or 3-unit trucks based on Michigan operating weight requirements. The inventory and federal operating rating shall be based on AASHTO HL-93 (LRFD), as modified. Shop drawings and calculations shall be signed and sealed by a State of Michigan licensed Professional Engineer. 2. Headwalls/Wingwalls. Shop drawings, structural calculations for structure and anchors and installation instructions detailing site specific instructions for handling, assembly and installation. The culvert structure designer shall provide load rating calculations for the headwalls and wingwalls, the cost of which shall be included in the lump sum price bid for this item of Work. Any necessary bypass pumping or dewatering necessary to complete the Work is included in the Contract Price. No additional payment will be made for materials or construction related to the replacement of the culvert.
