INTRODUCTION With the goal of internationalizing Ohio State s comprehensive range of activities in research, education and engagement, the Office of International Affairs (OIA) partners with Ohio State academic units to develop and manage a wide array of international collaborations. s range from a general Memoranda of Understanding () to more specific joint efforts, which are formalized as Memoranda of (), Student Exchange s (), International Dual Degrees, and International Collaborative Degree programs. The Office of International Affairs facilitates the development of formal international agreements, which are driven by Ohio State faculty, deliver specific mutually agreed upon outcomes, and serve to enhance and further the university s strategic international goals. This annual report documents international agreements that have been established in the period January 1, 2017 to December 31, The report organizes the data by type of agreement, college or university office and world region. Charts and graphs are included when appropriate for easy visual comparison of data across years. 3
4 Number of s II. AGREEMENTS ESTABLISHED IN 2017 BY TYPE OF AGREEMENT This section shows all agreements established during the 2017 calendar year, sorted by type of agreement. In 2017, Ohio State established a total of 60 international agreements. Of those, 25 were Memoranda of (s), 28 were Memoranda of Understanding (s), and 7 were Student Exchange s (s). The number of s has remained relatively steady in the three comparison years, but in 2017 there was a significant increase in the number of s established. In 2015 Ohio State established 10 s, in 2016 there were 7, and in 2017 that number grew to 25. By definition, Memoranda of carry out the strategic international goals of Ohio State and provide a framework for institutional relationships. They provide a strategic advantage to Ohio State as umbrella agreements for concrete and specific activities of importance. s specify activities, resources, outcomes, obligations and limitations by each partner and contain specific financial obligations. The 25 s established in 2017 and the activities made possible and carried out through them directly respond to the charge of the President s and Provost s Council on Strategic Internationalization in the Updated International Goals 2016 to: Create and expand robust international partnerships. OHIO STATE GLOBAL GATEWAY AGREEMENTS To solidify Ohio State s commitment to enhancing its global interactions, the university has opened Global Gateway offices in China, India and Brazil. These offices capitalize on Ohio State s strong connections across the globe and provide a myriad of opportunities for faculty, staff and students. In 2017, Ohio State established two (2) Gateway agreements in China: 1. China Yangtze (OETAP) 2. China Huazhong Agricultural (OETAP)* *OETAP stands for OSU English Teacher Advanced Program. 8
9 Number of s IV. AGREEMENTS ESTABLISHED BY COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY OFFICE This section shows all agreements established during the 2017 calendar year, sorted by college or other university office. In 2017 the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences saw most activity, each establishing 12 international partnerships. The Moritz College of established 9 agreements and the Fisher College of Business and the College of Engineering established 5 agreements each. Other colleges and/or units established between 1 and 4 agreements. The following chart compares the number of agreements established by college or university office. The tables on the following pages list agreements established in each college or other university unit by type of agreement.
