WASSERMed Water Availability and Security in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean [Collaborative Project, 01/ /2012] WASSERMed focuses on scientific knowledge about current and future water availability in the Mediterranean; The project relies on RCMs for realistic scenarios of CC, including precipitations and extreme meteorological events; GCM and RCM models are combined, critically assessed, and possibly updated output from climate models is processed by hydrological models, predicting changes in available source and ground water stocks subsequent analysis of adaptation and policy response (in specific case studies); In addition, WASSERMed considers macroeconomic and sectoral impacts on agriculture and tourism; Employing the concept of virtual water (trade)
CLICO Climate Change, Hydro-Conflicts & Human Security [Collaborative Project, 01/ /2012] CLICO explores the social dimensions of CC, by looking under what conditions hydro-climatic hazards intensify social tensions and conflicts in area of study or provide a catalyst for cooperation Focuses on water-related events such as droughts, floods and sea level rise (intensify) investigated in 11 case studies Why some countries and communities are more vulnerable to droughts, floods and related conflict, and what types of policies and institutions are necessary to ensure adaptation, security and peace in the face of global and regional hydroclimatic change
CLIMB Climate Induced Changes on the Hydrology of Mediterranean Basins [Collaborative Project, 01/ /2013] CLIMB is aiming to employ and integrate in a new conceptual framework: advanced geophysical field monitoring techniques remote sensing analyses and retrievals climate models auditing and downscaling integrated hydrologic modeling socioeconomic factor assessment to quantify (reduce?) uncertainties in CC impact analysis CLIMB will create an integrated risk assessment tool for adaptive water resources management and best agricultural practice under climate change conditions to reduce the risks of conflict
The CLIWASEC cluster Clustering WASSERMed CLICO CLIMB to better assess CC impact on water and security [Cluster of Cooperative Projects, 01/ /2014] WASSERMed FP7-Topic: ENV Funding period: 01/ /2012 Co-ordinator: Centro Euro-Mediterraneo per i Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC, Italy) Partners: 12 CMCC (IT), UNEXE (UK), CIHEAM- IAMB (Int.), CLU (IT), NTUA (GR), UPM (ES), NCARE (JO), PIK (DE), IRD (FR), ECRI-NWRC (EG), INAT (TN), CLIMB FP7-Topic: ENV Funding period: 01/ /2013 Co-ordinator: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU, Germany) Partners: 19 LMU (DE), AGRIS (IT), CAU (DE), CEMAGREF (FR), CERTE (TN), CINFAI (IT), CRS4 (IT), DLR (DE), FZJ (DE), GIT (TR), INRS (CA), Joanneum (AT), UA (FR), IUG (PS), UNIPD (IT), UNITN (IT), UZ (EG), VISTA (DE), BayFOR (DE) CLICO FP7-Topic: SSH Funding period: 01/ /2012 Co-ordinator: Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB-ICTA, Spain) Partners: 14 UAB-ICTA (ES), UEA (UK), ECOLOGIC (DE), CSCW-PRIO (NO), HUJ (IL), SCU (EG), ETHZ (CH), CyI (CY), UOS (UK), UNU-EHS (DE), PHG (PS), CREAF (ES), IPSO (BE), AAU (ET) Critical mass of 45 Partners
CapHaz-Net Social capacity buidling for natural hazards: Toward more resilient societies [Coordination Action, 06/ /2012] Research needs There is some empirical evidence that risk communication can contribute considerably to social capacity building, but more systematic evaluation is needed. Little is known as to which communication form is appropriate in which risk situation. More research is needed on the interactions between risk perception, risk communication and social capacity building in the field of natural hazards.
CapHaz-Net Social capacity buidling for natural hazards: Toward more resilient societies [Coordination Action, 06/ /2012] Conclusions for practice one-way transfer of information on hazards to raise knowledge, awareness and preparedness must be extended The implementation of two-way and dialogic communication in risk management practice to build trust and support mutual learning remains a challenge. There is a lack of public discussion on regional risk management, the desired safety level and the social capacities needed to face natural hazards.
FREEMAN Flood Resilience Enhancement and Management A pilot project in Flanders, Germany and Italy [CRUE ERA-NET, 09/09 08/2011] Objectives Assist in improving the resilience of communities in flood prone areas. Provide indicators and drivers that can increase the overall level of resilience. Provide guidance on the integration of flood resilience into operational Flood Risk Management Provide practical policy recommendations to aid the implementation of the EU Flood Risk Directive Partners:
FREEMAN Flood Resilience Enhancement and Management A pilot project in Flanders, Germany and Italy [CRUE ERA-NET, 09/09 08/2011] Perspectives Add resilience into Flood Risk Management: to shift from hazard to risk management to respond effectively to flood and deal with uncertainty to prevent and mitigate losses The concept of resilience needs to be made operational with research on resilience enhancement measures with populations enhancing their personal resilience with long term research on Vulnerability and Resilience Partners:
Guidance Documents XEROCHORE An Exercise to Assess Research Needs and Policy Choices in Areas of Drought [Support Action, 05/ /2010] XEROCHORE has synthesized knowledge on past and future droughts and identified research gaps to support development of drought management plans (DMPs). It covered the following drought fields: Natural/physical System: hydroclimatology; integrated drought assessment framework (hydrology and climate); drought monitoring (incl. early warning) and forecasting. Socio-economic and environmental impacts: methodologies for impact assessment; review wide range of water demand- and supply management (WDM and WSD) instruments and recent drought cases. Drought management and policies: overview of European and national policies and management efforts addressing drought. Processes for developing drought management plans (DMPs) within WFD river basin management plans; minimum required content of DMPs.
Science Policy Briefs XEROCHORE An Exercise to Assess Research Needs and Policy Choices in Areas of Drought [Support Action, 05/ /2010] XEROCHORE has: provided guidance and established an ongoing dialogue on drought issues among drought experts, stakeholders and policymakers significantly extended the network of drought experts through the European Drought Centre produced 5 Science Policy Briefs on the link between drought and the EU Water Framework Directive, i.e.: - characterisation of water bodies and of the analysis of pressures and impacts (Art. 5) - monitoring of surface water and groundwater status and of protected areas (Art. 8 - relevant also for Art. 1) - recovery of costs for water services (Art. 9) - implementing a programme of measures (Art. 11, including Annex VI part b) - river basin management plans (Art.13)
SCARCE Assessing and Predicting Effects on Water Quantity and Quality in Iberian Rivers Caused by Global Change [Consolider-Ingenio, Spanish National Funding, 12/ /2014] Objectives Contribution to basic research objectives to understand/solve problems associated to water scarcity Obtaining of thematic maps indicating location and consistency of observed changes with climate and land use change Model for river functioning Identification and characterisation of policy measures to adapt to Global Change
SCARCE Assessing and Predicting Effects on Water Quantity and Quality in Iberian Rivers Caused by Global Change [Consolider-Ingenio, Spanish National Funding, 12/ /2014] Perspectives Integration of disciplines (hydrology, geomorphology, chemistry, ecology, ecotoxicology, economy, engineering and modelling) Bridging communication gaps between scientists and water managers transforming results on management options Finalize, implement, and eventually refine the River Basin Management Plans (RBMP)
