«Third generation Biofuels» Gérard ANTONINI ANR Program officer 5 février 2009
ANR organization A public organization devoted to competitive project funding in both fundamental and applied research on the basis of international standards Objectives: to promote creativity to bring more flexibility and, subsequently, reactivity to increase competitiveness while keeping a good balance between fundamental research and applied research Budget 2008: M 896 Since 2005 about 1500 projects funded each year
ANR Bioenergy Programs Since its creation (2005), ANR has launched 2 programs on Bioenergy research. Program Period Number of funded projects Total budget Total ANR funding PNRB Programme National de Recherche sur les Bioénergies ~22% (7 projects) on 3G biofuels 57 M ~25% on 3G biofuels 23 M ~21% on 3G biofuels Bioénergies * ~30%(4 projects) on 3G biofuels 27,1 M * ~43% on 3G biofuels 10,6 M * ~38% on 3G biofuels * Data from the call for proposals launched in
Scope and objectives of the BioE program The objective of the program Bioenergies is to promote mainly partnership projects, research organization/private Company and to foster technological breakthroughs for the biomass valorization Its purpose is: to evaluate all kind of mobilizable biomass at energy ends; to develop industrial routes of conversion of the lignocellulosic biomass, in particular for the production of second generation biofuels ; to explore new ways for the hydrogen and lipids production by the action of micro-organisms (3 generation); to conceive integrated bioenergetic systems, within the framework of the concept of bio-refinery starting from the existing routes; to evaluate the socio-economic and environmental impacts of these new technologies. 4
Structure and content of the Bio-E program The program Bioenergies is organized in four sets of themes : Theme 1: The resource : mobilization, pre-conditioning Theme 2: Thermo-chemical conversion of LC biomass Theme 3: Biological conversion Development of specific strains, enzymes or consortium microbiological dedicated to the efficient biological transformation of biomasses Parametric optimization of the production of biogas starting from biomasses R&D of processes aiming to the biological production of hydrogen Development of processes aiming at the microbiological production of lipids Exploratory research aiming to the direct production of electricity per enzymatic or microbial biological degradation of organic matter (Bio- FC ) Theme 4: Technological Bricks 5
Presentation of funded projects in bioconversion (3 generation) Hydrogen production by heterotrophic micro-organisms ACETO-H2 (2006) : Conversion of sugars derived from cellulose and hemicellulose into hydrogen by the bacterium Clostridium acetobutylicum PROMETHEE (2006) : Hydrogen production, associated with the production of methane, starting from two fermentable waste models. Hydrogen production by autotrophic micro-organisms DIVHYDO (2006) : Sensitivity to oxygen of certain hydrogenases of photosynthetic micro-organisms to optimize their production of hydrogen HYLIOX (2007): Enzymatic engineering of hydrogenase for a photosynthetic production of hydrogen Biolipids production SHAMASH (2006) : Autotrophic lipids production from microalguae, within a photo-bioréactor. LIPICAERO (2007) : Microbial triglycerids production (oleaginous yeast) starting from substrates of agricultural origin. Photo-bioreactor development : BIOSOLIS (2007) : Design of a photo-bioreactor using solar light, able to be extrapolated on an industrial scale. 6
Presentation of funded projects in bio-conversion 2008 (3 generation) Biohydrogen production INGECOH : Engineering of microbial ecosystems producing biohydrogen by dark fermentation ANABIOH2 : Production of hydrogen by selected consortia of bacteria and deprived of agro-industrial micro-organisms methanogenes with concomitant valorization of lignocellulose or by-products (die meat and muds of purification plant). The organic acids extracted by separation membrane will be developed in production of lipids. The algae pathway SYMBIOSE : Study and optimization of coupling anaerobic bacteria-microalgae to produce energy by biological way from primary biomass and organic waste ALGOMICS : Metabolic draft study integrated of the microalgue model Chlamydomonas reinhardtii in order to generate the tools of metabolic engineering which will make it possible to modify this organization to use it in biotechnological processes of production of biocarburants (biodiesel, biohydrogen). 7
Aims of the meeting Evaluate the situation on ANR funded project in the field of 3G biofuels (Exemples of already started /new projects on BioH2 production and algae biofuel production) Animateur / Chairman: Gérard Antonini 14h15 : Production de biohydrogène / Biohydrogen production 14h15 : Projet HYLIOX Ingénierie enzymatique de l hydrogénase pour une production d hydrogène photosynthétique - Marc ROUSSET, CNRS BIP (PNRB-07) 14h30 : Projet InGEcoh Ingénierie écologique d'écosystèmes microbiens producteurs de biohydrogène par voie fermentaire - Jean-Philippe STEYER, INRA LBE (BIOE-08) 14h40 : Discussion 14h50 : La voie algale / The algae pathway 14h50 : Projet SHAMASH- Production d'un biocarburant lipidique par des micro-algues Olivier BERNARD, INRIA (PNRB-06) 15h05 : Projet SYMBIOSE- Etude et optimisation du couplage microalgue-bactérie anaérobie pour la production d énergie par voie biologique à partir de biomasse primaire et de déchets organiques Bruno SIALVE, NASKEO ENVIRONNEMENT (BIOE-08) 15h20 : Discussion 15h30 : Pause Café -Prise de contacts / Coffee break Networking 8
