New Bus ReFuelling for European Hydrogen Bus Depots Introduction to the NewBusFuel project Aberdeen 15 th March 2017 Element Energy Ltd
Agenda About Element Energy NewBusFuel project 2
About Element Energy Element Energy is a leading low carbon energy consultancy providing financial, analytical and technical analysis to help clients invest and create successful policies, strategies and products. We operate in three main sectors Low Carbon Transport Electric vehicles H 2 vehicles Market uptake Infrastructure modelling Business planning Project delivery Built Environment Financial viability Master planning Building design Policy advice Regional strategy Power Generation & storage Renewables Micro-generation CCS Techno-economics Feasibility studies Geographic analysis We offer three main services Due Diligence Technology assessments Market growth Market share Financial modelling Commercialisation advice Strategy and Policy Scenario planning Techno-economic modelling Business planning Stakeholder engagement Engineering CFD Software tools Prototyping Installations 3
Agenda About Element Energy NewBusFuel project Objectives Approach Results and publications 5
Existing H2 refuelling stations have capacity to refuel small fleets of buses (max. 15 buses per day) and many are located outside of depots ) PostBus bus depot in Aargau (Air Liquide) 2) IIT Hydrogen Centre in Bolzano (Linde) 3) BOC station in Aberdeen (Linde) 4) Ruter depot in Oslo (Air Liquide) 5) ATM depot in Milan (Linde) 6) De Lijn station in Antwerp (H2 Logic) Source: CHIC and High V.LO-City project 6
NewBusFuel aimed to improve understanding of technologies and engineering solutions for large-scale hydrogen refuelling at bus depots Objectives: The NewBusFuel project aimed to find solutions to a number of challenges for large-scale refuelling: Scale throughput in excess of 2,000kg/day (compared to 100kg/day for passenger car stations) Ultra-high reliability ensure 100% availability of hydrogen supply for public transport networks Fast refuelling buses need to be refuelled in a short window, leading to rapid throughput Footprint needs to be reduced to fit within busy urban bus depots Hydrogen storage can exceed 10 tonnes and lead to new regulatory and safety constraints Other challenges include regulatory issues, strategies for demand growth, new ownership models, redundancy strategies, and business cases for commercialisation. Approach: 13 collaborative design teams involving bus operators and industrial HRS developers, have defined optimal designs, hydrogen supply routes, commercial arrangements and practicalities for a hydrogen station capable of providing fuel to a fleet of fuel cell buses ( buses). The analysis team have evaluated the engineering studies to produce a techno-economic summary and a guidance document to help new bus operators understand the sector and inform complex procurement decisions for initiating a fuel cell bus project. 7
Agenda About Element Energy NewBusFuel project Objectives Approach Results and publications 8
The consortium was divided into 13 local study teams responsible for 13 individual engineering studies across seven European countries 9
Agenda About Element Energy NewBusFuel project Objectives Approach Results and publications 10
The main NewBusFuel project results are available today as separate two reports: a techno-economic summary and a guidance document The two main project reports are intended to assist procurement activities for bus operators with no prior experience of hydrogen refuelling technologies 11
All public reports will be available to download from a dedicated NewBusFuel website A dedicated project website includes information about the partners and individual studies. All project publications will also be available to download from the end of March 2017: The two main project reports (techno-economic summary and the guidance document) are available to download now. A further six smaller reports based on cross-cutting issues will be available for download by the end of March Eight public reports 1. Bus operator requirements for future tendering processes (NBF D3.2) 2. Review of regulations codes and standards issues (NBF D3.3) 3. Electrolyser ownership models (NBF D3.4) 4. Strategies for demand growth (NBF D3.5) 5. Strategies to ensure adequate redundancy (NBF D3.7) 6. Business cases to support FC bus commercialisation (NBF D3.8) 7. High-level techno-economic report (NBF D4.2) 8. Guidance document on large scale hydrogen bus refuelling (NBF D4.3) 12
