Flood Hazard Mitigation at DC Water VULNERABILITY & RISK ASSESSMENTS

Water will go where it naturally wants to

Flood Hazard Mitigation at DC Water CASE STUDIES

DC Water Vulnerability to Sea Level Rise If sea level rise were to reach 5.0 meters: significant damages in excess of $24.6 billion to commercial buildings, military installations, museums and government agencies (e.g. the FBI, DOJ, IRS, FTC, and the Department of Education) including DC Water Society for Risk Analysis (SRA). "Long-term sea level rise in Washington, D.C. could have significant impact." ScienceDaily, 1 Nov Web. 6 Jul

DC Water Flood Hazard Mitigation Efforts Blue Plains Wastewater Treatment Plant Current flood protection strategy consists of constructing a sea-wall with top elevation of 17.2 feet protecting against a 500-year flood elevation of 14.2 feet with 3-feet of freeboard.

DC Water Flood Hazard Mitigation Efforts

DC Water Flood Hazard Mitigation Efforts Seawall construction around the Enhanced Nitrogen Removal Facilities

DC Water Flood Hazard Mitigation Efforts Historic Main Pump Station and O Street PS the seawall is elevation along the Anacostia River, there has been approx. 6 of settling over the years; this entire seawall is currently being evaluated for condition and may be increased or modified. DC Atlas Plus <

DC Water Flood Hazard Mitigation Efforts Future capital projects to complete flood protection around DC Water Facilities like the Potomac PS will evaluate and use the latest climate change/sea level predictions

DC Water Flood Hazard Mitigation Efforts Water & Sewer Distribution Facilities Planning will be incorporating climate change data into latest analysis of critical facilities Identification and prioritization of critical facilities with electrical components that could be submerged in different wet weather/sea level rise scenarios

Mitigation Alternative Power & Redundancy

DC Water Vulnerability to Sea Level Rise If sea level rise were to reach 5.0 meters: significant damages in excess of $24.6 billion to commercial buildings, military installations, museums and government agencies (e.g. the FBI, DOJ, IRS, FTC, and the Department of Education) including DC Water Society for Risk Analysis (SRA). 18 Flood Hazard Mitigation at DC Water DATA NEEDS & LIMITATIONS

CLIMATE ADAPTATION AND MITIGATION AT DC WATER Emergency Preparedness & Response to Extreme Weather Events

Emergency Preparedness Mandatory ICS training for all managers and supervisors (Including senior staff) Communications to all stakeholders Regular planned conference calls (started a week before event)

Extreme Weather Events - Challenges Accurate information for planning the response What would roles be during the response Maintaining the rage

Extreme Weather Events Lessons Learned DC Water areas to improve on: Supporting Depts need to be included early/often in the planning process Activating the IMT early helped during the response Identifying the critical staffing roles and assignments Communicating up, down, in, and out What DC Water needed and didn t have: More accurate/localized flood and tide data to make accurate preventative predications (Not a criticism of NWS) Ability to reach out to our utility partners in NY and NJ Food support for our workers and support teams
