2 Our strategic goals JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability 2 Strategic Goals The greening of Europe The global sustainable management of natural resources Approach Integrated framework connecting drivers, pressures, state, impacts, and policy responses Economy Address environment and society Analyse and balance options Deliver integrated impact assessments Sustainable Management Society Environment

3 Our role & approach JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability 3 Within the JRC Thematic Area Sustainable Management of Natural Resources IES role is to: Develop a systems-based approach to the sustainable management of natural resources on pan-european and global scales Pool abilities to measure, map and describe elements of the Earth System (atmosphere-hydrosphere-biosphere-pedosphere) with our models Assimilate our observations at European and global levels to provide forecasts and scenarios Provide facts, forecasts and scenarios that help us understand how we: - manage strategic resources in a sustainable manner - provide for economic and social well-being of citizens - respond to the effects of climate change - preserve biodiversity - support the less developed world in meeting their development goals Environmental and socio-economic scenarios will provide guidance for priority setting and selecting policy options for the future.

4 Our scientific objectives JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability 4 Natural Resources State and Change - prospects on water - challenge of agricultural production and sustainable supply - air pollution - land and its use - demand and supply cycle of natural resources Global Change - adaptation and impacts of climate change policies on EU natural resources - global forest assessments - science for a stronger biodiversity policy Digital Earth - Earth observation for the monitoring of natural resources - information infrastructure for integrated assessments Integrated Modelling Platform for Sustainability Assessment - integration of modelling tools - support the development of indicators to monitor and measure progress
