Expert Working Group Meeting on Universal Access to Modern Energy Services, Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Cleaner Use of Fossil Fuels UNCC, Bangkok 14 December 2017
Main challenges for accessing to modern energy services We can categorize challenges for accessing to sustainable energy into two different groups: 1- lack of resources 2- lack of services The most important problem is that resources and services must work Simultaneously in energy sectors. But some countries have advantages on resources and some others have advantages on technologies for providing services. Therefore, the most influential way for accessing modern energy services is interactive relationships among these counties. In spite of these issues, importance of infrastructure is influential for accessing modern energy services, renewable energy, energy efficiency and cleaner use of fossil fuels. Therefore, the role of technology in this issue is very important
Main challenges for accessing to modern energy services The most crucial point for accessing Energy Efficiency and cleaner use of fossil fuels is benefitting from technological equipment. From this aspect and other than economic problems, different issues affect accessing Energy Efficiency and cleaner use of fossil fuels like existence of international comprehensive regulations. Therefore, creating and practicing these regulations may help any country, especially developing countries for accessing Energy Efficiency and cleaner use of fossil fuels.
Renewable energy challenges and outlook The most important challenge about renewable energy is related to investment and technological equipment. Considering this issue and based on the fact and figures, it seems that fossil fuels like oil and gas are the most important energy for providing the energy needs of world during the next two decades. For example, based on the OPEC world oil outlook 2017, oil demand in 2040 will increase around 17 mb/d and will reach 110 mb/d. Also the role of Asian countries in oil demand is dominant. During next two decades(until 2040), the share of fossil flues in world energy basket will be around 77%. On the other hand the share of renewable energy will be around 17% and this figure is 3% higher than share renewable energy in world energy basket in Also, another important issue is related to equal opportunities for different countries based on the economic and geopolitical aspects.
Gas is best way for cleaner use of energy Based on the economic point of views, modern energy services and renewable energy are more expensive in comparison with fossil fuels. Also Iran has massive natural resources like oil and gas with low production cost; therefore, from IR Iran point of view, development of natural gas could be an opportunity in the transition era and achievement of sustainable development low carbon criteria under technical and financial support of international commutations. Within this context, existence of the huge natural gas reserves in the realm of IR Iran provides us with the opportunity to play a prominent role dealing with our global energy priorities considering environmental issues. In the current situation and in our energy basket, share of the gas is around 70 %.
