6 Why China Matters 15 million people are moving into cities every year driving incredible generation and grid development now and for the foreseeable future Chinese utilities are growing annually at 30 percent plus China now produces more carbon emissions than US and will soon produce more power than the US China dependent on coal to provide nearly 80 percent of current generation needs Due to growth and environmental challenges, China has recently mandated energy efficiency and environmental performance standards for its career bureaucrats who manage government and state enterprises Poor environmental performance means no promotions China is now targeting renewable energy, energy efficiency, smart grid, advanced coal technologies and carbon capture and sequestration as new areas of emphasis Central government making firm development and deployment assignments to Chinese utilities in these areas China will move forward developing and deploying new technologies domestically this will drive the scaling and commercialization of these technologies globally 5

7 What We ve Accomplished on the Technology Front China Huaneng Group largest power generator in China with ~100 GW of capacity MOU signed in August establishes framework for collaboration in clean coal technologies o China s National Energy Agency supports Duke / Huaneng partnership Specific areas of further focus Green Gen / Now Gen site visits exchanged in first step to develop exchange of best practices o Huaneng is moving to establish GreenGen / NowGen as official project under the China-US Energy Research Center with Ministry of Science and Technology Agreement in principle for collaboration in development of applications for post-combustion capture Joint work plan under development for development of carbon capture, sequestration and beneficial reuse technologies Duke Energy will conduct nuclear training for select Huaneng engineers ENN one of the largest privately-owned energy companies in China and leading developer of clean energy technologies MOU establishing framework for smart grid, carbon capture and sequestration and beneficial CO2 reuse technology development Testing algae technology at East Bend this year 6
