Participants NEC The Japan Research Institute, Limited, Shimizu Corporation, Toshiba Corporation, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, IBM Japan, NEC Corporation, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Meidensha Corporation 25
26 3. (2) NEDO s Demonstration Projects Smart Community Collaboration with Industry Domestic alliance that includes a broad range of sectors and industries Planning and promotion of the following activities: Developing overseas ties/enhancing strategies Improve measures toward global standardization Establish roadmap 397 JSCA member companies (As of Nov. 2012) Governments, municipalities Manufacturers Universities Infrastructure Developers Services, Utilities other JSCA established in April 2010 at the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations Hall JSCA general meeting held in Tokyo in June
27 1.Outline of NEDO 2.NEDO s R&D Projects 3.NEDO s Demonstration Projects (1) Stand-alone Technology (2) Smart Community 4.Conclusion 27
28 4. Conclusion Approach for Realizing Low-Carbon Economies In the short-term, a market-pull approach (e.g., subsidies and regulations for users) is more effective than R&D. In the long-term, both a technology-push approach (including R&D) and market-pull approach are necessary. In order to facilitate energy efficiency in an effective manner, appropriate initiatives need to be undertaken. Industry: State-of-the-art technology for manufacturing processes (e.g., iron and steel, cement, chemicals, and pulp and paper) Transport and buildings: Smart communities consisting of energy efficient technologies and renewables Power generation: CCTs (USC, A-USC, IGCC and IGFC) and renewables (Solar PVs, CSP, wind, geothermal) 28
