2 Michael T. Braun Vita 2 RESEARCH INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES Understanding the dynamic processes that lead to effective team performance is vital as organizations increasingly rely on teams to perform critical tasks. Team knowledge building is an area that lacks strong theory and research as to how team members learn and share information over time and how that dynamic process is related to team effectiveness. I am interested in understanding the dynamic learning process to provide insights into how to help teams learn relevant information more quickly to make efficient, effective decisions. Likewise, the literature on team decision making rarely captures the uncertainty of information that exists in reality. I am interested in incorporating theory and research from other fields, such as economics and cognitive psychology, on how decisions are made in the presence of uncertainty to potentially provide valuable insights for training teams to interpret and integrate uncertain information for making effective decisions. Additionally, research on team leadership rarely focuses on the process or structure of emergent leadership, as well as how differential leadership ratings affect important team constructs such as cohesion and effectiveness. I am interested in studying how variability in leadership ratings affects team outcomes, as well as how different leadership structures from a network perspective form and differentially impact team effectiveness. Finally, the relationship between team cohesion and effective performance is the focus of a wealth of research studies, however very few look at how cohesion develops or changes over time. Additionally, very little research focuses on how teams actual behavior is representative of a cohesive unit while performing a task. I am interested in modeling how actual team behavior changes over time, in the hope of uncovering new insights into how cohesion affects performance. Unfortunately, the statistical results and scientific inferences from research studies are frequently limited by the research methods and statistical techniques commonly used in organizational research. Organizational scholars are interested in phenomena that are inherently dynamic and incorporate a great deal of uncertainty. Unfortunately, the primary methodological and statistical techniques utilized to study these phenomena do not adequately capture their uncertain, dynamic nature. Organizational researchers frequently utilize survey-based, crosssectional designs in data collection and employ regression-based models for data analysis. These methods are not equipped to properly model the complexities that exist in many dynamic processes. I am interested in exploring alternative methodological and statistical methods to better model underlying phenomena. Below are descriptions of my ongoing research projects that incorporate my interests in the substantive and methodological areas just described. Team Knowledge Building Examining how team members collaborate and gain shared knowledge structures over time for the Office of Naval Research. We have created a computer simulation as well as a human based task to track the learning and sharing of information among team members. Working with Dr. Steve Kozlowski, Dr. Georgia Chao, Dr. James Grand, and Dr. Goran Kuljanin. Team Decision Making Investigating how individuals and teams make decisions in the presence of uncertain information. More specifically, conducting my dissertation on how individuals attend to
3 Michael T. Braun Vita 3 and integrate risky, uncertain information to make a series of sequential decisions. Working with Dr. Steve Kozlowski. Leadership in Teams Examining the antecedents and consequences of variability in leadership ratings among team member using data collected from the U. S. Army. Working with Dr. Steve Kozlowski. Further, I am studying the use of social network analysis to identity different patterns of shared leadership. Working with Dr. Leslie DeChurch and Dorothy Carter. Team Cohesion Looking at how teams develop, maintain, and restore team cohesion. For NASA, I am currently examining potential behavioral indicators of team cohesion in a variety of tasks such as a lab and field experiment. Working with Dr. Steve Kozlowski, Dr. Rick DeShon, Tara Rench, Marina Pearce, and Samantha Baard. Additionally, for NSF, I am examining antecedents and consequences of network structures of cohesion and communications of teams embedded in multi-team systems. Working with Dr. Leslie DeChurch and Dr. Toshio Murase. Statistical Randomness in Growth Processes Integrating time series methodology into HLM analysis to test for and potentially deal with data with cumulative error terms. More specifically, we are looking at the inflation of Type I error rates that occur when Random Coefficient Models are used to analyze longitudinal data containing stochastic trends. SIOP Ambassador Program, 2011 Provided guidance for a first time member at the SIOP national conference in Chicago, IL. I helped a new member decide what sessions to attend, discussed ongoing research, provided insights into potential future research directions, and helped the new member network with other SIOP members. Organizational Psychology Colloquia Committee, Helped organize the organizational psychology weekly lecture series. Coordinated with fellow committee members to recruit speakers from other programs at Michigan State University as well as from other schools around the country to speak to the faculty and graduate students in organizational psychology. Organizational Psychology Recruitment Committee, Helped organize the organizational psychology recruitment weekend for prospective students. Coordinated with fellow committee members, faculty, and graduate students to plan activities for the new recruits to engage in over the course of three days.
