2 Intensive Course on IFRS 9 Financial Instruments IFRS 9 is on its way much quicker than you think. If you report, or intend to report, in line with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), you are going to have to get familiar with the new standard rapidly. Contrary to what many people believe, IFRS 9 will affect all industries, not just banking and not just entities that hold highly complex financial instruments. 3 What is IFRS 9 about? IFRS 9 introduces new models for classifying and measuring financial instruments and for impairment, plus new rules on hedging. Classification and measurement: Here there are new rules, and new choices to be made as to how you are going to measure financial assets choices that can simplify matters for your organisation. Impairment: The new IFRS 9 model will generally result in earlier recognition of losses, and could well require some work for you. The new rules will have a major impact on entities with significant financial assets, including (but not only) financial institutions. Applying the new requirements will require judgement. Hedging: The new IFRS 9 rules better align hedge accounting with your risk management strategies, and in many cases hedge accounting will be easier or less costly than before. At the same time, more hedges are likely to qualify for hedge accounting than under IAS 39.
