1 Executive Search Chief Executive Officer Client Overview Sterling Martin Associates has been retained to search for the next Chief Executive Officer at the Robert K. Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership (Greenleaf Center). The position is based in the organization s Atlanta, Georgia office. The Greenleaf Center is an international, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes the awareness, understanding, and practice of servant leadership through a variety of training programs, conferences, publications, workshops, and partnerships. Established in 1964, the Greenleaf Center is guided by the wisdom of its founder, Robert K. Greenleaf, who wrote The Servant As Leader and launched the modern servant leadership movement. A timeless concept, servant leadership is a guiding principal that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations, and ultimately creates a more just and sustainable world. Servant leaders use their power to help others grow, and they build institutions that contribute to a more just, caring, and sustainable society. Working with higher education institutions throughout North America, and with partners around the globe, the Greenleaf Center nurtures servant leadership in the world s young people through its Greenleaf Societies program. Through its Consulting Partners Initiative, the Greenleaf Center offers a variety of custom training, development, and leadership programs for organizations corporate, nonprofit, and government organization alike who are seeking to embrace the philosophy and practices of servant leadership. The Greenleaf Center also offers an annual International Conference which, in 2014, will be held in Atlanta, GA. 1 Robert K. 2 The Greenleaf Center s budget is in the $1.2 million range. The staff consists of six professionals, and the organization is governed by a 14-member Board of Trustees. A 10- member Advisory Council advises the CEO on ways the Greenleaf Center can achieve higher levels of innovation, relevance and impact. Chief Executive Officer Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Chief Executive Officer is responsible for providing the vision, direction, leadership and overall management for The Center while also achieving the strategic goals established by the Board. The CEO is responsible for the daily operations, programs, finances, and staff of the Greenleaf Center; recommends policies and carries out the policies adopted by the Board; and reports to the Board on a regular basis regarding the activities and status of the Greenleaf Center. The ideal candidate will either currently have a thorough understanding of the philosophy of servant leadership as articulated by Robert K. Greenleaf or the desire to become thoroughly versed in it. He/she will be a passionate advocate of Greenleaf s core message and possess the ability to communicate that message to current and future constituents of the Center. He/she must have a good understanding of nonprofit organizations and should be able to apply business skills to enhance the efficiency and impact of the organization. The Search Committee is seeking candidates who have demonstrated that they can build and manage relationships with the staff and other individuals and organizations that are critical to the success of the Center s mission. The Greenleaf Center is poised to expand its presence in leadership and organizational development. Greenleaf has developed a Consulting Partners Initiative in which numerous potential large clients have expressed interest. The new CEO will provide leadership by developing these partnerships while increasing support and impact of the organization s existing activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Under the broad direction of the Board of Trustees, candidates for Chief Executive Officer should be able to demonstrate excellence in the following areas: Strategic Partnerships & Marketing o Expanding strategic partnership with organizations that provide mutually beneficial opportunities for collaboration. o Maintaining and deepening existing strategic partnerships. o Growing the Consulting Partners Initiative domestically and on a global basis. o Developing opportunities to raise the organization s profile within the leadership and management community, including the corporate, nonprofit, academic, and government sectors. 2 Robert K. 3 o Creating up-to-date marketing materials and media. o Ensuring that the Center is effectively engaged through social media and webbased communications. o Enhancing the Greenleaf brand of servant leadership and position it as a major player in the field of leadership and organizational development. Training o Developing programs that align with the Center s mission and generates revenue to support the Center s activities. o Producing top-flight programs that reflect quality and impact among those participating. Content Development o Producing materials and media that promote the understanding, awareness and practice of servant leadership. o Creating media and content that will engage various demographics, including the youth, ethnic populations and international audiences. o Protecting the intellectual properties of the Greenleaf Center. o Building awareness of the Greenleaf Center as a valuable resource for materials on servant leadership. o Fostering engagement with academic community relative to teaching and research. Board Relations o Working with the Board to develop metrics and reports that allow them to monitor the progress of the Center toward strategic goals. o Ensuring that the Board is informed of opportunities and challenges that require adjustment in policies. o Providing the Board with information that supports their decision-making process. o Maintaining a healthy relationship with the Board as reflected in the advice and guidance of Robert K. Greenleaf (currently updated and expanded in The Board of Trustees as Servants by Kent Keith). Fundraising and development o Creating and implementing a comprehensive and effective development and stewardship plan. o Identifying and cultivating individuals, foundations, and corporate donors and expanding the Center s donor base. o Raising the funds necessary to meet annual operating budget and to build the reserves needed to insure financial sustainability. 3 Robert K. 4 Requisite Background and Experience Desirable Qualities and Characteristics Qualified candidates for the position of Chief Executive Officer will be expected to understand, embrace, and advance the servant leadership philosophy and be prepared to serve as the face of the broader servant leadership movement. All candidates will also be expected to present the following: Bachelor s degree from an accredited institution of higher education; advanced degree preferred. At least ten years of executive-level professional experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector. A successful track record in fundraising. Demonstrated understanding of governance issues, including board management and dynamics. Experience working with a governing board on strategic planning. Experience with conference planning and execution, publications management, and presenting training programs and workshops; demonstrated experience developing content for such activities. Demonstrated experience in setting and achieving goals. Knowledge of nonprofit finance and budgeting. Ability to set priorities, delegate responsibilities, and mentor, motivate, and develop others. Experience in building coalitions and strategic partnerships. Knowledge of the field of leadership and organizational development. Superior communications skills, both written and oral, and extensive experience with public speaking. An entrepreneurial spirit and orientation. Demonstrated ability to plan strategically and think tactically. Demonstrated experience working with the public. Some travel primarily domestic will be required.
