A recent report for a leading University summarises: Employers need to discriminate between applicants with a very similar academic profile. Employers will place an increasing emphasis on the value of work experience. Without it students may struggle to compete at the application stage. Nearly two-thirds of graduate employers warn that graduates with no previous work experience have little or no chance of receiving a job offer on a graduate programme. Employers look for evidence of professionalism - the ability to adapt to a professional or business environment. Completing a work placement will provide you with the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate these skills.

10 How does the Work Experience process work? The majority of work experience opportunities are sourced through the schools business and community contacts. Placements are often found in response to students needs and requirements. These placements will be for the County of Hertfordshire. Alternatively students are able to find their own work experience placements. Talk to family, friends and neighbours or use the internet to contact employers. Complete a Private Placement Form. Any student wanting to work outside of Hertfordshire e.g. London or wanting to work with a family member or friend will need to complete a Private Placement Form.

18 Find an employer Private Placements Collect a Private Placement Form from School Ask the employer to complete the Private Placement Form Inform the employer that they will receive a call or visit from the School Return the Private Placement Form to School ASAP! (Deadline Friday 5 th January 2018) This will incur a Late Fee! Health & Safety is essential. All placements are checked to ensure they provide a suitable learning opportunity for the student. All placements should have both Public Liability Insurance and Employers Liability Insurance.

19 Prior to the placement Contact the employer and arrange a visit if this is required Become familiar with the journey Ensure that clothing is appropriate Check lunch arrangements Check the details on your job description

20 Extra Information There will be lessons and activities to help students prepare for their work experience placement A teacher will visit or call during the placement If you cannot attend work experience you MUST contact the placement and the school
