2 Course Description This course is designed to provide the students an overview to the human resource management with particular emphasis on supervision of employees and traditional functions such as recruitment, training, performance appraisal and payment system, working hours, benefits and rewards, dealing with employee problems, termination of service, improving productivity and industrial relations. It is also designed to help foodservice students understand and work with human resource issues themselves. Course Competencies Upon successful completion of this course, the students should be able to : Know the importance of human resource management Give an overview of the growth of the human resources functions Describe hoe the human resources function is typically structured in an organization Outline the most importance labor legislation Describe the steps in the recruitment process Define the concept of training Outline the systematic approach to training Discuss the benefits of training Outline the types of wage system commonly used Outline the provisions of the Employment Act on working hours Explain why the employers offer benefits to employees Know the right way to deal with the employees problems Describe the concepts in termination of service Explain the importance of productivity improvement Explain the concept of industrial relations Student Responsibilities 1. Come on time to class. Fifteen minutes late will be considered absent. 2. Students are expected to read the respective chapter for the subject before come to the class. 3. All assignments and semester projects must be sent on time. 4. Students have to inform the instructor if they can not come to the exams or quizzes, the instructor will make arrangement if they have proves or valid reason for not to come.

To understand and examine the various method an employee can use to organize the working hours in his/her enterprise 6. Benefits And Rewards 1. Explore the way in which rewards systems can be seen as part of a wider human recourse management strategy 7. Dealing With Employee Problems 1. To understand the manager s role in the career management process 2. To develop techniques for building two-way communications in organizations. 3. To understand how to discipline employees. 8. Termination Of Service 1. Wrongful discharge and its importance. 2. Ways to dismiss an employee. 3. Dismiss procedures. 9. Improving Productivity 1. Importance of productivity improvement. 2. The Employment Act of The Employees Provident Fund. 3. The Employees Social Security ACT. 4. The Occupational Safety and Health Act. 3. What is the purpose of Job Analysis and why is it carried out? Prepare job description and specification for 5 important positions in the fine dining restaurant. 4. What are the main advantages of having Performance Appraisal? Prepare the Appraisal system for 3 positions in the kitchen management. 5. What is the different between a benefit and a reward? Why do employers offer benefits to employees? Which groups of employees are entitled to benefits by virtue of the employment Act? What are those benefits? 6. As the HRM department in the multinational Food industry, identify the workers grievances. What are the steps to be taken to solve workers grievances at the work place? LEARNING OUTCOMES 1.
