Life after qualification Charlie Sheldon Associate Qualified August 2017 The move from Trainee to NQ at Orrick is a challenging and exciting step up in terms of expectation and responsibility. In no time you will be given a greater role on transactions, including drafting more complex transaction documents, taking the lead in managing deal process and running completions. Whilst this may sound daunting, you are supported at all times by partners and senior associates, whose knowledge, experience and expertise provide for continual learning opportunities. Furthermore, the exposure and experience you gain whilst training at Orrick stand you in good stead to tackle the challenges of your new role. 4 Unlock your potential Our training programme The two-year training programme is made up of six four-month seats, which gives you the opportunity to experience a wide range of practice groups as well as being exposed to our top-tier clients. London is at the centre of our global network of offices, giving our trainees the opportunity to work on numerous cross-border and international transactions. The nature of our small intake allows our trainees to have responsibility from day one and work closely with our partners, of counsel and associates. We also run regular training sessions to ensure that you are provided with the knowledge and development required to becoming a successful solicitor. The training is a mixture of both in-house and external sessions delivered by our dedicated lawyer development team, clients, and specialist professionals.

5 Trainee Q&A As a trainee what salary could I expect? Trainee salaries currently start at 40,000 for the first year, rising to 44,000 in your second year. Will I receive any sponsorship? Yes, we will provide sponsorship in the two areas outlined below: GDL funding and 7,000 maintenance LPC funding and 7,000 maintenance Are there any additional benefits? As a trainee with Orrick you will be entitled to 25 days holiday and these additional benefits: Pension Private medical insurance Dental care Subsidised gym membership Season ticket loan Cycle to work scheme What exam results do I need? We ask for the following results: At least three A-Level passes at grades A and B (or equivalent) Predicted or obtained 2:1 or above degree in any discipline Passed at the first attempt, the exams for the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Legal Practice Course (LPC) Does Orrick have a way of contextualising my grades? As part of our graduate recruitment process, we are using the Rare Contextual Recruitment System. This is a specifically-developed system which allows us to measure candidates achievements in the context of their socioeconomic background. Using this system means we can better understand candidates achievements, and identify those that have performed exceptionally well from a range of diverse backgrounds. 8 Trainee timeline Open Day experience Future Trainee Trainee Associate I was attracted to Orrick because of the small trainee intake and the firm s ability to secure cutting-edge legal work in dynamic, and business centric, practice areas. Orrick s application process, more than any other, allowed me to develop a real understanding of the firm s culture. The Open Day felt very relaxed and not at all like we were being assessed. Everyone in the firm was friendly and welcoming which helped me to relax and perform at my best. I was immediately struck by how friendly and welcoming everybody was on the open day, and therefore I felt completely at ease and relaxed. Each activity gave me a fantastic insight into how life at Orrick would be, and I would therefore highly recommend it to all applicants. I really enjoyed the business game and in-tray exercise as they gave me an insight into what it would be like to work in a commercial law firm. The practice area talks and informal chats with trainees affirmed my belief that being part of a small intake will mean I can play an important role in the team from day one, maximising my opportunities to learn through practical experience. As a result, going into my final interview I was confident that I could explain why Orrick and I would be a good mutual fit. 9 Trainee experience Future Trainee Trainee Associate In my first year as a trainee I have completed seats in Real Estate, Corporate, and Litigation. During these seats I ve been able to get a good sense of both transactional and contentious work. It s great that as a trainee you are able to get a broad range of experience while also getting the chance to work on some specialist areas such as competition, renewables and technology companies. As a trainee at Orrick you will be heavily involved right from your first seat, which for me included being part of a five week long commercial court trial, serving a freezing injunction, and conducting an internal investigation for a large company. I really appreciated both the variety of work and the opportunity to contribute to the team. Max Iles Trainee Solicitor Started August 2016 To date I have had experience in working on large corporate completions and international white collar investigations, both of which involved working as part of a big team on complex matters. At the other end of the scale, I have had the opportunity to take ownership of some smaller transactions in Real Estate and of some really interesting pro-bono matters. Orrick has a large global network but the London office is small enough that you will get to know everyone. The atmosphere is friendly and supportive with everyone keen for you to learn as much as possible during your seats.
