4 The Big Hospitality Conversation is: A national initiative between leaders in the Hospitality industry and young people, showcasing Hospitality as a great career choice. Led by the BHA it provides a unique forum for industry leaders to meet directly with groups of young people to talk about tackling youth unemployment, the importance of work experience and apprenticeships. This initiative aims to abolish the current misconception that hospitality jobs are low skilled, low paid and lead to dead ends.
5 Purpose: To deliver 60,000 pledges from the Hospitality sector by the end of ,000 new jobs for young people age ,000 new apprenticeships places 20,000 quality work placements
6 Why does this matter? Hospitality & Tourism at the heart of economic growth Generating employment across the UK 4 th largest employer in the UK (2.7 million jobs) High youth unemployment Working together and unites government to champion job, creation, work placements and apprenticeships Hospitality industry can generate 300,000 new jobs by 2020

8 A Nationwide programme The first event took place in London in July 2012 and has so far held 32 events, touched all parts of the UK and engaged circa 2500 industry leaders and 4000 young people resulting in over 46,000 pledges of action. 9 Why Blackpool? Currently, five districts in Kent (Shepway, Swale, Thanet, Dover and Gravesham) have unemployment rates above the national average of 5.1% 6,000 claimants in Kent are aged and account for 26.5% of all claimants, the biggest proportion of those claiming unemployment benefits in the Kent area Thanet has the highest youth unemployment rate (10.3%) in the South East region In Maidstone alone there are 15 hotels with a total of 1059 hotel rooms, with one further hotel in the pipeline and an additional 15 rooms
10 The Big Hospitality Conversation at a glance or (including refreshments on arrival and lunch/afternoon tea) Ideally three spaces: 1. Reception/arrival drinks and networking 2. BHC needs an auditorium or conference room set for cabaret style with stage 3. Market place/careers fair space for circa exhibitors Easy access for employers and young people Capacity for a minimum of 200 for Big Conversation and up to 500 for careers fair space
11 Careers Market place Young people can receive help, advise and see the wide spectrum of roles available Employers can showcase their business Partners and support organizations can offer help and guidance stalls, National and local employers
12 Purpose of the sessions Young Hosts The young hosts need to be young people with a story to tell, with charisma, charm and edge, to be able to present in their own way to engage the audience Setting the Scene Ufi Ibrihim CEO BHA Position the BHA work and importance of one voice for the Hospitality Industry Position the impact the hospitality sector is having on UK economic growth with a real focus on hospitality & food services. Discuss the importance of creating apprentices/work experience/youth employment and how the area still has a long way to go in reducing the youth unemployment and training a skilled workforce in our sector. Inspirational Business Leaders or Local Celeb.. Inspire the audience with a career story and the purpose of the BHC and why it is important for them.
13 Purpose of the sessions Youth Employment Chaired by the local Work Service Director/DM This section should: Highlight the challenges & barriers young people face today in successfully finding employment, the impact this has on them socially, emotionally & financially Opportunity for the audience to hear their views on how we as a sector can do more to help them Requirements: JCP team to have 3 unemployed young people and 1 recently employed young people to balance the positive impact it has to end the session on a positive note (reserves must also be in place) They should be cheeky and charismatic so that employers warm to them The work coach should accompany them in case they clam up and be prepped to tell their story. Young people could be incentivised to attend with vouchers, if they need to travel long distance we could accommodate in hotel the night before Outcome: The business leaders should feel compelled to offer roles for the 3 during the course of the event and all the YPs in attendance
14 Purpose of the sessions Work Experience Chaired by Anne Pierce, Springboard This section should Articulate the importance a well structured and meaningful placement has for both a young person and employer. Outline how this also helps our sector to stand out as an industry with diverse career opportunities including marketing, finance, PR, IT that are changing old perceptions... Requirements: A panel to demonstrate how successful work experience can be for both the individual and organisation. We Interview 3 employers and 3 young people who have successfully completed work experience in their business Outcome The business leaders feel compelled to ensure they improve their work experience programme and pledge to do more. Young people are keen to investigate how they can get on a work experience programme and want to find out more by visiting the partner stand in the market place
15 Purpose of the sessions Apprenticeships introduced by a media / business leader This section should The impact & benefits an apprentice programme has for employers and equally the benefits and career foundation it has on a young employees joining our sector. Requirements Inspire the audience by listening to both employers & apprentices, whilst understanding on the different types of apprentices and providers are available. Outcome The outcome should be that the business leaders feel compelled to ensure they improve their work experience programme and pledge to do more. Young people are keen to investigate how they can get on a work experience programme and want to find out more by visiting the partner stand in the market place
16 Purpose of the sessions Partnerships hosted by John Forrest Springboard, JCP, NAS and BiYP discuss with host: 1. How their organisations can support the young people in the room to secure work experience, an apprenticeship and employment 2. How their teams can help employers of any size use the programmes and tools available 3. Sign post to the teams in market place/career stands from 1-3pm. Purpose & positioning of The BIG Conversation hosted by John Forrest Explains exactly what we would like all the delegates to do at the tables. Talk, listen, network, make a pledge (Pledge card on tables) Networking and Big Conversation For approx. 60 minutes a rare opportunity to bring together business leaders & young people to discuss how they feel after listening to the mornings event. They will now understand the importance and difference a pledge can make to their business and young lives whilst also inspiring each other to take action by converting that pledge into a reality with the support of the BHC & partners.
17 Purpose of the sessions Final Call to Action Delivered by Ufi Encourages everyone to take action & pledge. Explains the partner / career stands set up in the lobby. Explains the importance of this event and how the BHA is representing the industry Close Young Host or guest Speaker General Thank you and wrap up Thanks all the steering group and all parties who have contributed and bids farewell etc. Market Place The purpose of this is to give young people somewhere to go after the event to discuss next steps on their journey with people and organisations who have inspired them
