1 SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT CEO Personal Thoughts from the Chairperson, AAA 1-B Board of Directors Our Agency is special and deserves a special leader. What has struck me most about our Agency is the boundless passion of the employees and the Board toward living and breathing and actualizing our mission, vision, and values: Our mission is to enhance the lives of older adults and adults with disabilities in the communities we serve. Our vision is to lead regional efforts to ensure that older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers achieve their highest quality of life. Our core values are Teamwork, Integrity, Quality, Innovation and Respect. This Agency has been led by only two individuals over its 40-year history. Times of such fundamental change, both because of this leadership change, but also because of the ever-present changes within national health policy, can be uncomfortable. They also can offer an exciting opportunity to take stock of our accomplishments and open ourselves to the next phase of our development. We seek an individual to lead us through that process and help us create an even better future. We need a CEO who can assess the organization quickly, integrate the current talent into a strong leadership team, deliver on strategic objectives, and incorporate meaningful performance-based incentives. We are looking for an individual with strong non-profit experience in a field related to service to Older Adults. A successful candidate needs to have led a complex organization in a highly regulated environment and understand the convergence of health services and home and community-based services for older adults. The individual we seek also needs to have the competencies and leadership characteristics that would best position our organization for financial growth and continued programmatic success. The AAA 1-B has a long history of leadership and innovation, and needs a CEO who is experienced and comfortable working on the leading edge of innovation. ABOUT AAA 1-B The non-profit organization, AREA AGENCY ON AGING 1-B is headquartered in Southfield, MI and serves the 660,000+ older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers throughout the six counties we serve in southeast Michigan. Metro Detroit and Wayne County are served by a different Area Agency. We are the largest Area Agency in the state of Michigan, and one of the largest in the nation with a $52 million annual budget, a 150-person staff, and contractual relationships with 140+ contractors and vendors. We have AAA 1-B - CEO Posting Page 1 of 5
2 developed an outstanding breadth and depth of innovative programs. The most recent example is the implementation of the demonstration program working with Medicare Advantage plans to meet the service needs of the dual-eligible population. The AAA 1-B is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is responsible for supporting a comprehensive and coordinated service delivery system. We aim to impact positively the health and well-being of the older adults in our region, as well as adults with disabilities, and family caregivers. The goal of our Agency team and external contractors and vendors is to lead efforts that result in the highest quality of life through our core values. The AAA 1-B places a strong emphasis on strategic planning, sound financial administration, advocacy, and diversifying our revenues and programming. As Michigan s largest Area Agency on Aging, we take our position seriously, contributing leadership across other agencies when possible. Building on our core competencies has resulted in contracts with Medicare Advantage Plans, assisted living facilities, the Veterans Administration, county governments and local funders. We offer a generous benefits package to our Chief Executive Officer and employees. ABOUT THE AREA The main office (Southfield, MI) is located in the heart of Oakland County, with satellite offices in Ann Arbor, Macomb County and Monroe. Oakland County is among the 10 highest income counties in the US with populations over 1 million residents. The local economy is very diverse and less reliant on manufacturing jobs than other parts of the state. Local schools are highly rated and there is a range of interesting cities, quiet towns, and beautiful country options for living within a minute commute to work. Our six-county service area extends from the Ohio border in the south, north past Ann Arbor, and east to Lake St. Clair. The region provides abundant opportunities for education, culture, professional sports, outdoor adventure, and the arts, including access to many universities, vibrant downtown Detroit and the Detroit Institute of Arts (one of the top museums in the US). Michigan is the perfect mix of a quiet lifestyle and friendly, caring people with Midwestern values. POSITION SUMMARY JOB DESCRIPTION: CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO) The Chief Executive Officer reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for providing the vision, strategy, leadership and direction to ensure the Agency achieves long-term viability, growth, sound financial and operational performance, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. CEO has ultimate accountability for ensuring a strong, positive, collaborative culture which reflects Agency mission and values. The CEO establishes and maintains external relationships, develops strategic partnerships, maintains key client and vendor relationships, and ensures the Agency has a high degree of visibility in the community and is viewed as a trusted expert and thought-leader. 3 The CEO sets the professional tone for the Agency, models the values, and establishes strong and highly effective relationships with all leaders, employees, clients, partners, and vendors. The CEO creates a culture which reinforces accountability and facilitates the achievement of Agency objectives. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Essential job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Communicate and reinforce the Agency s mission, vision and values to serve as the foundation for the overall direction of the organization. Ensure revenue, margin, and financial results are consistently achieved. Protect the Agency s legal interests and maintain operations within applicable laws and regulations. Direct and oversee the overall operations of the Agency including: o Successful implementation of Board directives and initiatives. o Review, evaluation and approval of program and departmental activities. o Decisive allocation of resources and funds for greater effectiveness. o Holds leaders and employees accountable for individual and departmental performance. Actively manage/sustain a transparent relationship with the Board; ensure Board, Advisory Council and Committee members are informed of significant matters affecting the Agency. Lead development and implementation of the Agency s Strategic Plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors and Senior Management Team (SMT), including to: o Design, execute and measure short and long-term goals. o Review and approve plans for improved performance of systems, processes and programs designed to maximize efficiencies and accommodate the growth objectives of the Agency. Create and maintain a strong, positive and collaborative culture with high levels of employee retention and satisfaction through: o Direct communication with employees through written updates, announcements, town halls, and other methods. o Mentoring and career development; promoting and supporting engagement and inclusion; encouraging effective employee training and management and leadership development programs. Must be aware and help the organization adapt to emerging trends in the healthcare industry. Establish sound working relationships with external community leaders; federal, state, county and local governments. Actively advocate on behalf of the agency and the aging network. 4 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED FOR THE JOB 5-8+ years senior leadership experience and a Masters Degree in Public, Business, Healthcare Administration or Social Work with emphasis on policy, planning, administration or management OR a Bachelors Degree in same with 10+ years senior leadership experience. Senior leadership experience includes actively working with a Board of Directors and managing staff in a multi-site organization. Prior CEO experience in an organization of similar size and scope beneficial. Candidate should have non-profit experience with demonstrated success in running a complex organization in a highly regulated environment. Must understand regulatory requirements and know how to sustain a low-to-moderate risk tolerance for long-term growth and viability. Experience with for profit and entrepreneurial ventures would be advantageous. Strong leader and visionary who instills confidence in the team/staff and ensures Agency plans and projects are successfully implemented. Understands and uses metrics to measure performance. Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, strong executive and financial management, and experience with contracts and grant management required in a similar sized non-profit, health-related and/or older adult services company. Prior experience in transforming an organization to meet new requirements, implementing program innovations, enhancing the culture, and continually improving performance is critical to meet the demands of our changing environment. Highly effective interpersonal skills with ability to successfully work with various audiences including the staff, management team, Board of Directors and various Committees. Strong networking skills and experience building connections in the community. Can establish and maintain effective working relationships with federal, state and local agencies. Strong and frequent communication, presentation and influencing skills are required for this position. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES THAT ARE IMPORTANT FOR SUCCESS IN THIS POSITION Understand the mission of the Agency and the continuum of evolving issues regarding the aging population and individuals with disabilities. Understand the private market, pricing, services, and competition. Build relationships with high performing Area Agencies for the Aging in the state and best in class across the country. Ability to guide and strengthen the organization and build a cohesive and high performing senior leadership team. Must have passion about the field and our Agency s mission. Must be comfortable taking calculated risks, engender the support of the employees to move forward and ensure the operations of the Agency are highly functioning and successful. 5 Fundraising experience. Prior media experience and training highly beneficial. MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY & KEY RELATIONSHIPS The Chief Executive Officer manages the following direct reports (who include many of the Senior Management Team Leaders) and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of these units. The CEO has indirect responsibility for approximately 150 employees of the Agency, headquarters and three (satellite) office locations, and maintains frequent contact and visibility with colleagues in the community. Building and maintaining connections with the external community is critical to the success of this position.
