5 SPEAKERS AND CONTRIBUTORS JOHN WINTLE MORNING CHAIR MEMBER, PRESSURE SYSTEMS GROUP, INSTITUTION OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS John Wintle is a Mechanical Engineer, consultant and leading authority on structural integrity and asset management of installations, welded structures and plant components. He has published many papers and best practice reports for the HSE and the Energy Institute on topics including risk-based inspection, management of ageing and life extension, and inspection of high-hazard plants. John has acquired significant international experience through his work on European projects, codes and standards committees and through other networks. He was appointed Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 2006, chairing its Pressure Systems Group from 2008 to He became Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde in JOHN BARTLETT AFTERNOON CHAIR MEMBER, PROCESS INDUSTRIES DIVISION NORTH WEST, INSTITUTION OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS John Bartlett has over 45 years of experience in civilian and naval nuclear engineering industries as well as earlier training and experience in the chemical process industries. He has worked on a number of projects including conventional and nuclear process plants, submarine propulsion and naval dockyards, Magnox, PWR and breeder reactors. He has also worked in the development of new-build nuclear plants of different types, construction and fabrication, installation, modification, commissioning and decommissioning. John has a BSc in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (First Class Honours) and is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. MARK SCANLON PANEL SESSION CHAIR HSE TEAM MANAGER, TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT, ENERGY INSTITUTE Mark Scanlon is Health, Safety & Environment Team Manager in the Energy Institute s (EI) Technical Department, based in London. He leads a team of project managers who are responsible for delivering the HSE aspects of the EI s Technical Work Programme, the products of which include technical publications and training resources that provide good practice knowledge to help improve the HSE performance of the energy industry. His work is primarily for the benefit of upstream petroleum production, petroleum refining, petroleum bulk storage and power generation sectors. He directly manages some technical development projects including those focusing on risk analysis, process safety management systems, process engineering and asset integrity. In doing so, he engages with operating companies, regulators, trade associations, EPC contractors and consultancies. ANNE O NEAL KEYNOTE SPEAKER OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY AT CHEVRON ORONITE Previously Anne served as manager of Planning and Performance in the Health, Environment and Safety Department. Anne joined Chevron Research Company as a process engineer in She held a variety of positions in process design, process engineering and refinery operations. In 1990 she joined the Corporate Health, Environment and Loss Prevention department where she coordinated our implementation of process safety management. Anne was appointed manager of Learning and Development for Chevron s technology companies in 1996 and oversaw the development of Chevron Technical University and the Horizons program. Anne has served on a variety of industry, academic and philanthropic boards currently she s a member of the Center for Chemical Process Safety, UC Davis Department of Chemical Engineering and Material Science, and the Boy Scouts of America. Anne earned a bachelor s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Davis. GRAEME ELLIS AUTHOR AND MEMBER, PROCESS SAFETY COMMITTEE, ENERGY INSTITUTE (ABB CONSULTING) Graeme Ellis is a Principal Lead Consultant with ABB Consulting based in the UK. He has a Process Engineering background and 32 years of experience in the process industry, previously with Kellogg, Hercules and ICI. Graeme trained as a hazard study leader and has worked as a Process Safety Consultant in all sectors of the process industry since His main areas of work are process safety management and risk assessment, particularly with major accident hazard sites in the UK. Graeme is a member of the Energy Institute Process Safety Committee and the expert panel developing standards for Process Safety Leadership training, supported by UK HSE and chaired by the Chemical Industries Association.

6 SPEAKERS AND CONTRIBUTORS PETER DAVIDSON DIRECTOR SAFETY, COMMERCIAL AND PROJECTS, UKPIA Peter Davidson was appointed in September 2011 as Director Safety, Commercial and Projects. Peter s responsibilities encompass oversight of all UKPIA s safety and commercial roles, including the Retail Policy Working Group and the Petrol Retailers National Safety Group, who manage the Forecourt Contractor Safety Passport. Peter joined UKPIA in January 2009 as Process Safety Programme Manager, having previously worked for ABB, and has extensive experience of safety management and certification in a number of industries including pharmaceutical, chemical and nuclear. JOHN BURNETT MEMBER, HUMAN AND ORGANISATIONAL FACTORS COMMITTEE, ENERGY INSTITUTE (RWE GENERATION) John Burnett is responsible for the management of a team of 80 to meet the commercial, safety and environmental requirements of the 24-hour operation of Aberthaw Power Station. His career has spanned a variety of power station operational roles and prior to joining Aberthaw in 2012, he spent three years at the newly constructed Pembroke Power Station with responsibility for Business Performance. John graduated from Bristol University in 2003 with a First in Mechanical Engineering, which included a year at the University of Illinois, USA, and has recently completed an MBA from Warwick Business School. MARTIN SEDGWICK HEAD OF ENGINEERING AND R&D GLOBAL TECHNICAL SERVICES, SCOTTISH POWER Martin Sedgwick joined Scottish Power in 2001 where he worked as the Station Manager at Longannet Power Station, responsible for the management of the 2,400MW coal-fired power plant in central Scotland. In 2007 he was appointed Head of Asset Management, with the aim of developing the group s asset strategy in line with PAS 55 and developing an integrated approach to operations and maintenance including developing a new risk approach to asset management and process safety. Martin is recognised as a worldleading expert on the subjects of process safety and operational integrity and is regularly invited to deliver keynote addresses at industry events, commenting on regulatory guidance on the subject of Process Safety. Through the Amor Group, Martin has provided consultancy to a number of multinational energy companies on how to successfully implement a robust process safety management programme, including the development of an innovative approach to KPI management. ED SMITH AUTHOR, HUMAN AND ORGANISATIONAL FACTORS COMMITTEE, ENERGY INSTITUTE (DNV-GL) Ed Smith has been working with DNV-GL in the field of risk management for over 25 years. He has a PhD on the influence of maintenance management on high-reliability plant. He was the main author of the Energy Institute s guidance on Safety Critical Task Analysis and is currently involved with the Energy Institute s forthcoming guidance on Learning from Incidents. Ed has conducted studies for energy and allied industries as well as in transport.
