Responsible for receiving work orders from the Athletic Operations Supervisor II at the athletic complex. 2. Responsible for directing the completion of general grounds services, tasks and activities at the sports complex. 3. Responsible for transferring equipment to other sports complexes as needed. Product /Workplace Descriptions The work of a Stadium Caretaker-Foreman with Houston Independent School District is performed in a school district involved primarily in the education of school-aged children and students grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The specific department in which the duties are performed is the Athletics department. The Stadium Caretaker-Foreman is responsible for working under the supervision of the Athletic Operations Supervisor II at the athletic complex. The Stadium Caretaker- Foreman receives verbal orders from the Athletic Operations Supervisor II as to where specific work, beyond the normal day to day maintenance, needs to occur for each shift that is worked. The Stadium Caretaker-Foreman serves the role of organizing and working with the Stadium Helpers (4 Helpers on site at the facility tested) to ensure that the Sports Complex is ready for each sporting event on the schedule for the season. The worker must ensure that the grounds of the Sports Complex, which may include (multiple football and/or baseball fields, indoor basketball courts, parking lots and the various support areas and buildings included in these complexes), are prepared for use before and cleaned after each event. The worker must ensure that the natural grass fields are HISD - Stadium Caretaker-Foreman

2 watered, fertilized, airofied, turf, sand, and mowed as needed on a weekly basis and that before a game the field is painted and dry prior for game use. The artificial turf is painted and prepped for game use as well. Baseball fields are treated the same for natural grass though the infield dirt is prepared by nail dragging, grating and watering for dust control prior to a game. Indoor courts are swept with the appropriate floor cleaners as well. Landscaping around the Sports Complex is neatly cut and maintained as well and all waste materials are bagged and disposed of. All workers including the Stadium Caretaker-Foreman and the Stadium Helpers work together to pick up all the trash and debris from the stadiums, fields and parking areas after games are played. During the busy season this may be 6 days a week. Blowers, 20 gallon trash bags (keeps weight down), shovels and bare hands are used during the clean-up process. Depending on the number of games on a particular day workers may work from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, but on average spend 4 to 5 hours of cleaning is needed out of a normal 8 hour work day. High pressure washers are utilized 2 to 3 times a year to thoroughly clean the stands, entries and bleachers as well as various other areas. The Stadium Caretaker-Foreman is also responsible for transporting various pieces of heavy equipment to other facilities, when needed, and to the shop for any major repairs. This may include the loading/unloading of large riding mowers used to mow the lawns and fields of the various Sport Complexes. The most important consideration for the Stadium Caretaker-Foreman is to ensure safe operation of equipment by the Stadium Helpers. This requires the worker to be cognizant of new equipment training and the proper maintenance of all equipment used by the Stadium Helper. All personnel that are in contact with the public while operating machinery must ensure that the debris from the machinery does not fly in the direction of the public. Pushing/Pulling The physical demands of pushing and pulling take into consideration the force(s) required to overcome inertia. Pull Forces The peak force required to overcome inertia when raising (pulling) a ramp up off of the back of a trailer for large industrial sized mowers is pounds. This lift is completed with both hands and begins 44 inches above the ground (see picture located at end of this report with description of essential function #2). The ramp is lifted and then allowed to drop to the ground in order for the mower to be loaded/unloaded. Two ramps are present on the back of each trailer, and this pull is completed when loading the mower for transport. This pull is completed utilizing bilateral upper extremities with supinated forearms and a modified palmar pinch to grasp the edge of the ramp. The peak force required to pull ramp up off of ground on the largest trailers used to transport large mowers used in the lawn equipment department is 52.4 pounds. This pull is completed utilizing bilateral upper extremities with supinated forearms and grip to start the lift, transferring to a push with pronated forearms and extended wrists until gravity takes over and the ramp falls to the trailer. The peak force required to lift a fertilizer spreader (this is used to spread seed, fertilizer and dryer on the fields) when attaching to rear of a 4 wheel Gator is 54.7 pounds. 3 typically lifted with one hand starting at 6 inches above ground level and ending at 16 inches above ground level. This lift is performed daily during peak times of the season. Significant Weights The weight of a bag of rye grass seed is as much as 70 pounds. This is lifted from ground level and dumped into the spreader at chest level. This is a bilateral lift. The weight of a 5 gallon can of field paint is 58.9 pounds. This paint is lifted with one hand from 20 inches above the ground to 40 inches above the ground and poured using 2 hands into a field paint sprayer. This is performed approximately 2 times a week during the busy season when painting the fields. The weight of bags of athletic field conditioner, grass seed and rapid dry is 50 pounds per bag. Each of these products is used during the maintenance of the various fields at the Sport Complex. The bags are lifted from ground level to chest level when loading them on the back of the 4-wheeled gator and when dumping them into the spreader. This is a bilateral lift. The weight of a 36-inch chainsaw is 20.2 pounds. The 36-inch chainsaw measures 36 inches from tip of blade to base. The chainsaw measures at 14 inches tall off of ground. This chainsaw is gripped with one forearm in pronation and one forearm in neutral, but can vary dependent upon the angle the worker is cutting. The weight of a 3-wheeled edger is 65.0 pounds. The handles of the edger are 36 inches off of the ground and 13 inches apart. A neutral grip is used when pushing the edger, and a supinated grip is used to lift the edger. The edger is lifted to place it in the back of a truck when loading up after work is completed. The weight of a blower is 22.8 pounds. The blower is carried on both shoulders, much like a backpack, which utilizes two shoulder straps. A neutral or pronated grip is utilized to grasp the hose where air exits. The weight of the Power Pruner Saw is The Power Pruner Saw is grasped with one forearm in pronation on the handle of the saw and one forearm in supination supporting under the saw. The maximum length of the pole saw is 8 feet. During use may be used at chest level and overhead level. The weight of a weed eater is 16 pounds. The weed eater is 42 inches long. The weed eater is gripped using bilateral upper extremities, with one forearm in pronation and one forearm utilizing a neutral grip. The work of a Stadium Caretaker-Foreman with Houston Independent School District is performed outdoors and indoors in an Athletic Sports Complex environment. Temperature and humidity levels vary dependent upon the weather. The Stadium Caretaker-Foreman must be able to endure hot and humid conditions during the summer months and also cold conditions in the winter months. The worker may need to complete some of these specific activities during rain, but does not operate riding mowers during lightening storms. The worker is required to wear safety goggles, knee-high rubber boots, gloves, reflective safety vests, dust respirators, earplugs and earmuffs in the performance of this work. 4 Tools and equipment used in this Stadium Caretaker-Foreman include, but are not limited to the following: Ride on and push mowers, tractors, 4 and 6 wheeled gators, seed spreaders, field paint sprayer, weed-eaters, hedge trimmers, pole saws, chain saws, shovels, rakes, pruners, 3-wheeled edgers and shears. 9 Essential Function 2: Responsible for directing and completion of general grounds services, tasks and activities at the sports complex. Function Description: The Stadium Caretaker-Foreman is responsible for directing and working with the Stadium Helpers in the maintenance of the Athletic Sports Complex. This includes operating various pieces of heavy and light lawn care equipment which may include push mowers, riding mowers (which are both self-propelled), tractors/gators towing various items like a spreader, 3-wheeled edgers,weed-eaters, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, pole saws (used for cutting high tree branches), chain saws, shovels, rakes, pruners, shears, and scissors. The ramps are spring loaded when lifting from the ground (as shown in the picture below on the left).
