4 REALITY FOR EVER Transportation chain consist of three links: Subject - Cargo Means of transportation - Vessel Man power - Crew on board Thanks to the Law of Nature, the flotation principle, transport by sea will always be the cheapest and the most convenient way of transportation. Considering quantity - complete lot of cargo - several thousand containers, Mt or more of ore / grain / oil - we can talk about the fastest means of transportation too.

5 PAST There was more than 30 crew members on board years ago Today crew complement on board is close to required MINIMUM SAFE MANNING certificate. Life on board was very hard but in some respect - more relaxing - without stresses Existed trial to minimize crew

Shipping moves nearly 90% of the world's trade Crew costs- the greatest share of operating costs The most important guide is budget figure Development of transport technology - changing of communication system

7 FUTURE Development - result with fast increasing number of vessels with Internet access. 50% More Satellites to be Launched - Decade Ahead According SES who own and operate a fleet of 52 geostationary satellites Addressable Market is Close to vessels

8 Vessel receive info RE present vessel, cargo, voyage, etc., but not any additional shipping information News to seafarers - not compulsory - Majority of world crew are not receive any information at all Owners/Managers will never subscribe to shipping Magazine for the vessel - not compulsory and costly Shipping Magazine - Readership breakdown- Owners operators, Services, Insurers, Layers, ship managers, equipment providers, etc, etc... BUT in NO cases exist subscription for vessels

9 ADVANTAGE OF RECEIVING DAILY NEWS SERVICE Majority of the World fleet - without Internet access. Daily news service using local language / SCRIPT life more comfortable - saving time and expenses too Weekly Maritime News (English edition only) - could be treated as additional professional education. Crew are reading the news during coffee/break time using hard copy Less interest for surfing on Internet, saving time, and preventing possible congestion

10 Internet access on board Advantages: Communication with family and friends made easier and much less expensive. Quick access to world/regional news respectively to any kind of information Self study purpose E-learning tools On line banking Important factor for joining a company Rises the crew computer literacy through usage

11 Disadvantages: Reduce work output Wireless access-, crew can access to Internet even when on duty: Bridge/EC Room or Cargo Control room Increase of fatigue level Speed of Internet transfer data on board is far slower Congestion on server Several analysis confirmed, crew are mainly using Internet for communication with families, friends, facebook, etc.,.... In reality, Lack of information.

12 On some companies crew have to pay for Internet communication by pre-paid card = using Internet for - private communication only and - not reading news at all.

14 RESPONSE FROM CREW ON BOARD ARE CREW MEMBERS / HUMAN BEIGN READY TO ACCEPT: - Intention to minimize crew members - Daily excess of work load - Familiarization with all new equipments from different makers - To be in permanent accordance with all requirments from Flag, PCS, Vetting etc.etc - Finally to get some rest - without breaking rest period policy and TO ENJOY INTERNET ON BOARD

15 AUTHOR'S CONCLUSION Not all crew members are reading news by Internet. Seafarers - not reading Maritime news at all Significant % crew o/b are not great fun of Internet system - they don t like to use P/C during free time. We are all looking for well educated crew, and without up-to-date information is difficult to keep good education level

16 It is important to mention well known human being inert behaviour. Daily tasks on board, requiring more and more time and efforts from each crew member plus all above mentioned disadvantages of Internet access on board, could bring us to unexpected problem that - seafarers of the 21 st century will be less informed than their older colleagues.

17 Important Notice: Valid in both cases, with or without Internet on board Crew happy = morale is high = work more effectively. Daily news service - text only well appreciated. News service - great help- offering possibility to: MINIMIZE EXPENSES - Update Maritime information could prevent extra expenses, damages etc. SUPPORTING KNOWLEDGE - Maritime news should be in every respect treated as permanent additional professional education. 18 Financial benefit By receiving daily news service possible financial benefits can be viewed as follows: If half of the crew only (let s say 10 crew members) will save (by not using the internet) 12 minutes daily (less surfing for news reading), 10 crew by 12 min = 120 min by 30 days = min = 60 hours monthly, 60 hours of Int. connection = Certain amount of money = No expenses to OWNER Even in case of flat rate, It means: 60 hours of less Internet connection - less congestion 60 hrs of Int. connection to use for more important tasks - again less congestion 60 hours of saving Fatigue to the crew after long working day, etc, etc hours yearly (less used ) per vessel by number of vessels can bring Owner to position to discuss lower flat rate for next contract. 720 hours = ONE MONTH /vessel/ship - just if half of the crew o/b will not use Internet by reading daily news.
