3 1 REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais is one of just three European companies to manage both very high-voltage electricity and high-pressure natural-gas grids. OUR MISSION To ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity and natural gas at the lowest cost, while satisfying quality, safety and security criteria, maintaining a real time balance between supply and demand, and providing the systemic conditions for a viable energy market. PUBLIC SERVICE CONCESSIONS IN PORTUGAL Electricity transmission Natural gas transmission Reception, storage and regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG) Underground natural gas storage Wave energy

5 3 Electricity REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais transmits electricity in Portugal and ensures the technical management of the Portuguese electricity grid under a concession agreement with the Portuguese state which runs until REN operates the National Transmission Grid (RNT), which links producers to consumption centres. It balances energy demand and supply, ensuring an uninterrupted supply of electricity at the lowest cost, providing quality of service, safety and security. REN has over 17,800 electricity pylons REN has approximately 8,400 km of power transmission lines RNT delivery points enable supply to the distribution grid, which in turn feeds the majority of final consumers. Electricity companies are responsible for managing relations with final consumers, including invoicing and customer service. REN has the specialist skills and know-how to manage and integrate renewable energy sources (RES) into the national electricity grid. This is the result of Portugal s investment in this form of energy in recent years figures show that 57% of all Portuguese consumption now comes from RES. In order to boost integration of the Portuguese and Spanish electricity grids, REN operates on the Iberian Electricity Market (MIBEL). It provides connection capacity for the daily and intra-daily markets, long-term capacity allocation via Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs), and operation and settlement for the ancillary services markets, including cross-border exchange mechanisms. INTERNATIONAL BODIES IN WHICH REN IS REPRESENTED: ENTSO-E - The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity; MED-TSO - The Association of Mediterranean Transmission System Operators; MEDGRID - A company promoting the development of electricity grid connections between the northern, southern and eastern Mediterranean; Eurelectric An association representing the electricity sector s interests at the European level; Friends of the Supergrid An association promoting the European electricity supergrid.

9 7 Natural Gas REN Gasodutos is responsible for transmitting natural gas at high pressure and for providing overall technical management of the national natural-gas grid. It receives, stores and regasifies LNG, and stores natural gas underground. These tasks are covered by concession agreements with the Portuguese state that run until The pipeline network is 1,298 km long Each ship delivers about 130,000 m 3 of liquefied natural gas to Sines, which is enough to supply Portugal for a week. REN Gasodutos operates the National Natural-Gas Transmission Grid (RNTGN), which receives natural gas at the Spanish border or at the Sines terminal and delivers it to distributors or high-pressure end customers. The LNG terminal at Sines is operated by REN Atlântico, and the underground storage of natural gas is provided by REN Armazenagem. INTERNATIONAL BODIES IN WHICH REN IS REPRESENTED: ENTSO-G - The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas; GIE - Gas Infrastructure Europe - The association of operators of gas transmission networks, gas storage systems and LNG terminals; MARCOGAZ - The association representing the European natural gas industry; EASEEGAS The European association for optimizing energy trading.

13 11 REN Telecom RENTELECOM SA has been a public telecommunications network operator since 1 November The company was founded to exploit the surplus capacity in security telecommunications networks that are an essential support for the transmission of electricity and natural gas. The company turns its high value-added know-how in information technologies to its advantage, focusing on security telecommunications networks that are used to manage and operate energy grids. REN has over 5,600 km of fibre-optic cables RENTELECOM operates in the business market, with particular focus on the utilities and telecoms-operators sectors. In addition to its outstanding know-how in providing utilities solutions, RENTELECOM positions itself as a partner for telecoms operators and IT systems integrators. ENONDAS The Portuguese pilot zone covers approximately 320 km 2 In 2010 the Portuguese state granted ENONDAS a concession to generate wave energy in a pilot zone. The concession runs for 45 years and includes the authorization to set up infrastructure and connect it to the public electricity grid. ENONDAS uses the Ocean Plug trademark. The Portuguese Pilot Zone (ZP) encompasses 320 km 2 and is located close to São Pedro de Moel, between Figueira da Foz and Nazaré. The main goal is to create an open space on the Atlantic coast dedicated to the development of marine energy, with particular emphasis on wave energy.
