1 Technicians Competency Framework Health, Safety & Environment: Takes personal responsibility for ensuring that the University is a leading organisation in providing a safe, healthy and environmentally responsible workplace Laboratory Skills: Fully understands the requirements, issues and outcomes required in their technical area IT: Uses the full capabilities of IT available to support the work done in their college Equipment: Fully understands the purpose, operation and maintenance of equipment in their area Research: Contributes effectively and supports research being undertaken Teaching: Contributes effectively and supports research being undertaken Management: Manages people in the workplace effectively, with understanding and efficiency Use these competency definitions to inform which technical skills are essential for the role prior to recruitment and selection. On appointment and subsequently at PDR, you can individually identify those skills that need to be developed, thereby creating a personal training plan. You will find that each competency is broken down into three development levels to help with identifying development needs. Use the levels as a starting point for discussion about the type of skills required for the job role and agreeing suitable developmental activities. Each job role may have a combination of skills required from each of the development levels for each competency. By reference to these competencies you are focussing on technician development in the agreed job roles. They are not intended as a tool for promotion or job re-grading. March 2011

2 Health, Safety & Environment Takes personal responsibility for ensuring that the University is a leading organisation in providing a safe, healthy and environmentally responsible workplace 2 + Exhibits understanding of individual responsibility for health and safety and looks out for the safety of colleagues. + Acts in a safe manner at all times. + Always complies with safe systems of work. + If in doubt, asks finds out or knows who to ask for help and advice. + Follows COSHH and risk assessments as appropriate. Indicators + Applies and adheres to HSE policies, legal obligations and university procedures where reasonably practicable. + Resolves any HSE issues quickly and appropriately, or raises it with the appropriate people. + Follows through on any HSE issues to find the cause and eliminate the risk. + Will do whatever it takes to ensure systems of work that are safe, environmentally aware and socially responsible, and monitors them regularly. + Undertakes and communicates COSHH and risk assessments effectively. + Leads by example, always exhibiting the highest regard for health, safety and the environment. + Demonstrates detailed understanding of policy, practices, legal requirements and consequences. + Identifies risks and consequences quickly, and makes swift and effective decisions. + Is proactive in continually improving systems of work. + Advises on best safe practices. + Understands and applies HSE legislation appropriately. + Authorises COSHH and risk assessments.

4 IT Uses the full capabilities of IT available to support the work done in their college 2 + Understands the features & functions of hardware & software packages in day to day use. + Understands the resources available across the network and can use these effectively in their work. + Knows who to talk to for help if needed. + Uses appropriate software to improve working capability. + Familiar with the use of software on a day to day basis to analyse data. + Uses Outlook effectively for s and diary management. + Can fully utilise the software packages and specialist IT in routine use within their area. + Can deal with both standard and non-routine problems when using computers. + Uses appropriate software to manage files, retrieve documents, etc. + Can fully utilise and standard IT packages. + Conducts research using IT skills. + Capable of presenting data using IT in an understandable and professional manner. + Can undertake what if analysis as necessary. + Uses the full capabilities of key software to analyse data and present it in the most effective way. + Can resolve complex problems relating to computer systems and software. + Is able to produce reports using specialist IT reporting packages. + Trains others in the use of IT functions. + Demonstrates the capabilities and functions of IT systems to colleagues. + Acts as expert in specifying output requirements of IT hardware and software systems. + Looks for ways to use IT to create opportunities, using IT as a way to improve practical capability. + Uses IT as a decision support mechanism, keeping on top of any issues that emerge. + Influences senior management on system capabilities and customer needs.

5 Equipment Fully understands the purpose, operation and maintenance of equipment in their area 2 + Demonstrates competency when dealing with routine day to day issues, existing equipment and tasks. + Keen to learn and progress. + Follows instructions properly, in accordance with all guidelines. + Achieves what is asked of them within reasonable constraints. + Maintains equipment to the appropriate standards. + Shows a deep understanding of their specialist areas and equipment. + Proactively manages equipment, maintenance and servicing. + Identifies and sources equipment/maintenance as required. + Trains others to use equipment. + Confident and capable in dealing with any matters relating to equipment. + Authors standards and policies. + Advises and liaises at senior levels + Develops opportunities for full use of the capabilities of equipment. + Demonstrates their effectiveness in budget management and authority. + Good depth of understanding of professional and stakeholder requirements and people we deal with. + Knows how decisions, purchases, etc. will impact the organisation and stakeholders with due regard for future implications. + Writes manuals and method statements for equipment. + Advises and trains on specialist equipment. + Shares processes and best practices nationally.
