1 Program Summary: Complete renovation with addition and code upgrades for a historic academic building Program Statement: Damaged in Hurricane Katrina, the circa-1929 former high school in historic Marigny neighborhood was converted to a new pre-k through eighth grade public school for the State of Louisiana Department of Education s Recovery School District. The three story concreteframe and masonry infill structure has a new 25,000 square-foot addition on its south exposure. Besides classrooms and teaching spaces, the structure houses administration offices, a new cafeteria, library, and gymnasium. Ongoing structural damage to the exterior shell of the building due to poor masonry detailing necessitated removal of the existing brick skin, repair of the concrete frame, and an entirely new masonry enclosure with new doors and windows throughout. 6 RR70.06 Entry Three spacious existing stair halls at the center of each original façade serve as entry and wayfinding spaces for students in this large educational facility. These separate entrances were given different-colored windows from the other building fenestration elements in order to make them legible. Multiple entrances allow students to access the building at preschool, elementary, and middle school entrance halls. This allows for this large public school facility to operate at different scales and helps to orient the students, particularly the younger ones who might be overwhelmed by the size of the facility in this urban setting.

7 RR70.07 Top of East Stair Hall Typical Classroom Corridor Painted MDF wainscots were used throughout the facility to protect the walls. Height of wainscot increases as students work their way up through the building and curriculum. Terrazzo floors were used in all classroom corridors as a low maintenance material. First floor corridors were replaced with new terrazzo and existing second and third floor terrazzo corridors were patched. The terrazzo floors in the new wing reverse the color pattern of the existing building. Daylight from the central courtyards enlivens the long existing corridors of the original building.

8 RR70.08 Classrooms The LEED Silver facility has generous window bays to provide good daylighting for teaching spaces throughout the building. VCT floor patterns were employed as a strategy to make homeroom spaces memorable. At lower left, two music classroom are able to function as a single performance space by means of a movable wall system.

9 RR70.09 Media Center New skylights were replaced in original locations and daylight was filtered through a fabric awning armature to give interest to this important center. Furniture was also selected by the firm to bring color and life into this interior space.

12 RR70.12 South Addition and Play Yard Brick classroom blocks bookend horizontal-format zinc paneled mechanical spaces. Cast stone sun screens protect the classroom glazing on the south façade. The addition is broken into three masses to break down the scale of the building and creates entrances from the play yard to the south.
