27 Sustainability Should Give us a Drive! Climate change: In Alaska the ground disappears Global analysis: Climate change heats up lakes - also in Germany In Alaska the permafrost soil begin to melt. As a result, the soil is vulnerable to erosion. Now researchers see the extent. In many places, huge holes gape. Source: The drinking water could become scarce, people are starving - researchers warn about the impact of climate change on lakes worldwide. In the waters, the temperature rise even more strongly than in the ocean. Source: Oceans expands more Previously, it was thought that the sea level rises due to the melting ice. New satellite measurements show now: the main cause is the thermal expansion due to climate change. A possible consequence: The risk of storm surges is higher than expected. Source: At the climate conference in Paris 2015, the world has set itself a goal. In Marrakech, the world wants to start working on the roadmap to improve climate protection. Now the experts have to work properly. Source: 27

28 Nuclear Waste from Germany Volume [m 3 ] Expected nuclear waste in Germany (1961 until 2080 cumulated): m 3 high-level radioactive waste and m 3 medium- and low-level radioactive waste This is equivalent to: around 624 containers (40 feet) high-level radioactive waste and around containers (40 feet) medium- and low-level radioactive waste : Approx. EUR 23 billion should be payed by the operators of German nuclear power plants in a fund, to finance the interim and final disposal of nuclear waste. This was decided by a group of experts. 43 ENERCON Develops a Battery Storage and Power-To-Gas Project in Haren (Germany) Objective: Increase self-sufficiency, i.e. reduce grid load 43

44 System Competency "Smart Container" E-Mobility Battery Storage Hydrogen Generation Modular, scalable interface between application and grid to be used for system services grid support security of supply storage systems. Battery storage for short-term applications or performance stabilization. Hydrogen as a long-term storage or for transition into the gas grid. Buffer to be used for e-mobility. Reference projects in operation (> 15,000 hours). 44

45 Schaufenster intelligente Energie / Showcase Smart Energy Objective: To demonstrate the distribution network of the future, digitized and able to take a maximum of renewable energy Consortium consists of 75 renowned organizations from industry, science and politics. Total investment 200 million, of which 53 million are funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy Japan brings hybrid storage (Li-ion + NaS) worth another 25 million to the project ENERCON provides power electronics and know-how for the high-dynamic provision of reactive power and coordinates the technical provision of flexibility between producers and consumers. 45
