1 SPORTS INSTITUTE NORTHERN IRELAND JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Responsible to: *Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach Head of Strength & Conditioning Salary: 29,296-35,264 per annum (plus superannuation addition) Please Note the salary quoted is reflective of the nature of hours worked Term: 51 weeks fixed term (to be reviewed at end of term for the possibility of extension) Job Purpose To contribute to the strategic and operational development and delivery of effective strength and conditioning (S&C) services within the Sports Institute Northern Ireland (SINI) and its associated network of training centres. Design and deliver high quality strength and conditioning support to SINI supported athletes and programmes to improve their sporting performances. Contribute to the multidisciplinary support approach operated at SINI to achieve a positive performance impact. Main Duties and Responsibilities Strategic Assist the Head of Strength and Conditioning in the development of the strength and conditioning service within all SINI programmes Work with the Head of Strength and Conditioning to develop the S&C strategy and manage implementation within the SINI. This may include external or internal education, research, resource development or service development activities Support the Head of Strength and Conditioning in delivery of SINI service strategy within Northern Ireland Develop effective working relationships with coaches, NGB staff, strength and conditioning and other support service providers within the UK and Irish systems Operational Develop, deliver and monitor effective strength and conditioning support that meets the needs of the athlete, coach and sport. Lead the S&C programme for sports/athletes as directed by the Head of Strength and Conditioning Work in collaboration with other service providers to deliver integrated athlete programmes that impact on performance across a wide range of sports (both Olympic/Paralympic and Non-Olympic and both individual and team)
2 Conduct strength and fitness testing and physical competence assessments and maintain a database of results. This will include use of data management systems employed within SINI. Promote a multi- and inter-disciplinary team approach to performance enhancement through proactive interactions with other SINI service units (especially physiotherapy and performance science) Maintain a comprehensive, indexed database of work conducted with athletes and coaches and engage in reflective peer reviews with other members of the SINI S&C Unit Contribute to monitoring and reporting on the effectiveness of the work of the S&C Unit within SINI programmes - keeping the Head of Strength and Conditioning informed of task accomplishment, issues and status Manage and maintain equipment and resources within the SINI network of facilities Development Coordinate and participate in the delivery of a comprehensive staff education and development programme that ensures that SINI S&C support, positively impacts on performance outcomes of athletes and coaches Initiate and contribute to special projects within SINI and that are part of the wider development of the strength and conditioning discipline Help ensure that models of good practice are captured and disseminated appropriately across the SINI network Attend meetings and workshops, training courses and visit regional sites on occasion as appropriate Supervise and manage the activities of staff as directed by the Head of Strength and Conditioning Participate in organisational training and staff annual performance reviews To take reasonable care for the health and safety of him/herself and of other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work and to co-operate so far as is necessary to enable any duty or requirement imposed on SINI under statutory provisions to be performed or complied with. 3 SPORTS INSTITUTE NORTHERN IRELAND PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION Job Title: Responsible to: *Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach Head of Strength & Conditioning 1.0 QUALIFICATIONS 1.1 *A degree (or equivalent 3 rd level qualification) in sports science, coaching, sports studies or a sports related subject 1.2 *Accredited/Certified member of the UKSCA or ASCA (level 2) or equivalent 1.3 A post graduate qualification in Strength and Conditioning 1.4 A current first aid or basic life support qualification from a recognised organisation 2.0 PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE/TRAINING 2.1 *A minimum of 3 Years full-time experience (or part-time equivalent indicated by detailing number of hours per week) with a proven track record in the design and delivery of physical preparation programmes for athletes in international competition. This experience should represent a range of athlete performance levels, ages and sports. 2.2 *A verifiable record of working within a multidisciplinary team in the delivery of services to high performance athletes and coaches 2.3 A comprehensive understanding of the principles of periodisation of training schedules, incorporating all aspects of a strength and conditioning programme, including testing, which meets the sports specific requirements of an individual 2.4 Excellent anatomical knowledge and the ability to apply this to an elite strength and conditioning setting 2.5 Ability to teach and demonstrate Olympic lifts and a wide range of basic and advanced conditioning and weight training exercises
4 2.6 Experience of and ability to modify programmes according to results of assessment data in conjunction with coaches and other support staff 2.7 Advanced understanding of relevant equipment and technology, including its use and maintenance 2.8 Have travelled as a support staff with an individual or team to a major international competition at senior level (e.g. Olympic or Paralympic Games, World or European Championships or Commonwealth Games) 2.9 Have worked as support staff at a training camp with an individual or team in preparation for international competition 3.0 JOB RELATED ACHIEVEMENTS 3.1 An understanding of the needs of elite athletes and coaches in a high performance environment 3.2 An understanding of the practitioner role and models of physical preparation, sport science and sports medicine support appropriate to performance sport 3.3 Ability to implement innovative ideas and influence athlete and coach programmes to ensure performance impact 3.4 Sound organisational and planning skills with the ability to work under pressure, prioritising own workload 3.5 Excellent skills in the use of IT applicable to a sports context 3.6 Excellent problem solving and decision making skills 3.7 Proven integrity and appropriate working relationships with others combined with a strong anti-doping stance 3.8 Previous experience delivering strength and conditioning workshops 4.0 OTHER FACTORS 4.1 *A willingness to work irregular and unsocial hours as required, involving work outside normal office hours, at evenings, weekends and bank holidays
