ORGANISATION CHART: Head of Operations Transport Manager 3 x Full Time Transport Assistants 4 x P/T Transport Assistants 6. JOB PURPOSE: The main purpose of the role is to assist the Transport Manager in the running of the University Transport Department. This includes driving minibuses and cars for University business, maintenance and cleaning of University vehicles and maintaining accurate records e.g. Safety checks. The primary purpose of the role will be to transport students from Riverside to Leighton and Macclesfield Hospital sites. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The role holder will assist in the running of the Transport Department, which is situated on the Chester campus. The Transport Department consists of a fleet of 8 minibuses and 10 cars plus service vehicles for other departments including 2 Catering, 7 Maintenance, 1 Grounds, 3 Caretaking, 1 LIS and 1 Porters/Security. Service vehicles at the Warrington Campus consists of, 1 Housekeeping and 2 Maintenance. The Transport department is responsible for a number of contract work including transporting students to Schools and Hospital sites for the Faculty of Education and Children s Services and the Faculty of Health and Social Care. The Transport Department is also responsible for the Inter Campus Shuttle Bus Service for staff and students. PJ 31/07/2014

WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS: 8.1 Communicating Effectively The role holder must communicate effectively and clearly with customers on a daily basis relating to the work of the Transport Department. The role holder is responsible for answering routine enquiries on a daily basis relating to the Transport Department. This may be by telephone, or in person. Customers include Senior Management Team, Faculty Departments, University teaching and support staff and visitors. 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively The role holder is an effective member of the Transport Department. They will be expected to work as part of a team to assist with the completion of daily routine tasks. The role holder will promote a friendly inclusive atmosphere maintaining a high standard of service. 8.3 Liaison and Networking The role holder will be expected to liaise with various members of University staff, students and visitors and represent the Department accordingly. 8.4 Service Delivery The role holder may be required to assist with the daily vehicle bookings ensuring s and telephones are answered promptly and efficiently. The role holder is responsible for the day to day efficient and safe use of the transport materials, equipment and tools, reporting any damage and faulty equipment to the Transport Manager as they arise. The role holder is required to complete vehicle safety check sheets each time University cars/minibuses are used, reporting any damage to the Transport Manager. The role holder is required to drive, clean and conduct general maintenance on all University fleet vehicles. The role holder on occasion will be required to drive for other Departments at the University. The role holder will be expected to transport staff/students in wheelchairs. Ensuring correct procedures are carried out. The role holder is required to have a flexible approach to work and provide general support to the Transport Manager on a regular basis. The role holder on occasion must be prepared to cover staffing shortages for which appropriate notice where possible will be given.

3 The role holder is required to participate in training required for the role e.g. First Aid, Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) training. The role holder will be required to attend professional staff development sessions and wear a staff uniform at all times whilst at work. 8.5 Effective Decision Making The role holder receives instructions and directions on a daily basis from the Transport Manager who is readily available. The role holder must be able to work effectively alone and unsupervised. They must make independent decisions when responding to queries in line with University policies and procedures identifying the most appropriate person for queries to be directed to when appropriate. The role holder will use their own initiative when allocating the most cost effective vehicle for the journey in line with the Transport policy. 8.6 Planning and Organising Self and Others The role holder will assist the Transport Manager in planning and organising the use of resources in order to provide an effective and efficient service. The role holder will be expected to plan journey routes to ensure the most efficient and safe service is carried out at all times. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) The role holder will be expected to take initial decisions regarding issues with fleet vehicles and solve minor problems e.g. replacing bulbs, wiper blades and tyres, referring on to the Transport Manager when appropriate. The role holder will be required to contact the relevant service when vehicles breakdown, e.g. RAC, AA. 8.8 Analysis and Research The role holder will not normally be required to perform any analysis and research outside of their duties. 8.9 Sensory and Physical Demands The role holder must be physically fit and when required, lift heavy boxes and equipment etc. The role holder will be expected to remove seating from the minibus and assist staff/students in wheelchairs onto the minibus using a ramp. They will be expected to use the correct professional etiquette and disability awareness. Training will be provided Work Environment The role holder will normally work within a stable environment, within the Transport Department.

4 The role holder will be expected to work in an outdoor environment when required. The role holder is expected to ensure Health and Safety compliance is met within all areas of work at all times Pastoral Care and Welfare The role holder is responsible for the welfare and well-being of staff, students and visitors while being transported in any University vehicle. The role holder will provide support to staff/students with disabilities/specific needs when travelling in University vehicles ensuring they comply with the training guidelines. The role holder must be aware of the support services available within the University; giving supportive advice and guidance to staff/students and referring on where appropriate. The role holder will be a University First Aider Team Development The role holder will provide information and guidance on transport processes/procedures to any new member of staff within the Transport Department. The role holder will be required to give guidance and advice on the transport policy and procedures to all staff, students and visitors to the University on a regular basis Teaching and Learning Support This is not a requirement of the role Knowledge and Experience See Person Specification General To undertake any other duties commensurate with your grade, and/or hours of work, as may reasonably be required of you. 5 PERSON SPECIFICATION Job Title:Transport Assistant Department: Transport Criteria / Qualifications: Full clean UK driving licence. Holds the D1 category for minibuses or has held a license since before 1 st January First Aid at Work Certificate. NVQ Level 2 or equivalent Method of identification Proven Experience: Proven driving experience on a full licence. Experience of light commercial driving. Experience of working within a similar environment. It is a legal requirement that applicants are over 21 years of age for insurance purposes. Motor vehicle mechanical experience. Application form Delivering academic and service excellence: Experience with computerised systems. Customer care skills. Successful completion of in-house competence drive. Actual drive test on interview day Managing self and inspiring others: Ability to effectively and clearly Communicate. Working together: Commitment to working as part of a team. Organisational and stakeholder awareness: Flexible approach to work Requirements are those, without which, a candidate would not be able to do the job. Applicants who have not clearly demonstrated in their application that they possess the essential requirements will normally be rejected at the shortlisting stage. Requirements are those that would be useful for the post holder to possess and will be considered when more than one applicant meets the essential requirements. Method of identification is where the selection panel will match the candidate s skills and abilities to the required criteria outlined (i.e. application form, interview, test).

6 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER TERMS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT TRANSPORT ASSISTANT 15 HOURS PER WEEK SALARY SCALE University Scale OS3, points 7-10, 16,131-17,528 per annum pro-rata payable monthly in arrears. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOURS OF WORK Monday to Friday 4.00pm 7.00pm A flexible approach to work will be required as there may be occasions when it would be necessary for you to work additional hours as dictated by the workload. UNIFORM A uniform will be provided which must be kept in a clean and presentable condition and always worn whilst on duty. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 22 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years), rising to 27 days after five years' continuous service. Two extra statutory days per annum during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Successful candidates will be required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire, and may be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualifications as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. PENSION SCHEME The University operates two pension schemes for support staff: The default scheme is the Higher Education Defined Contribution Scheme (HEDCS), which is administered by Friends Life. The Cheshire Local Government Pension Scheme, to which the University is an admitted body. All support staff are entitled to participate in one of these schemes. Some staff will be automatically enrolled into a scheme, depending on their age and earnings, but if they do not wish to remain a member of the scheme, they will be entitled to opt out after enrolment.
