4 D E F I N I T I O N S EVIDENCE-BASED: Within the literature there are many definitins f what cnstitutes evidence-based r evidence-influenced practice. The develpment f evidencebased plicy and practice is a cnscientius mve away frm a stance that is primarily based n persnal r prfessinal pinin, cnjecture r past practice t ne that is based n cncepts r findings that have been rigrusly evaluated and tested against the best available empirical evidence. Such evaluatins and testing include systematic reviews that find, evaluate and synthesize the results f all relevant research. HUMAN PARTICIPATION: This refers t the participatin f peple (human beings) in the research prject thrugh direct cntributin t such instruments as interviews r surveys r indirectly thrugh bservatin r the use f their authred material. RESEARCH: A clear and cncise definitin f what cnstitutes research within the business caching cntext includes any investigatin, explratin r experimentatin that intends t gain knwledge, understanding and insight int ne r many aspects f business caching cntext, practices, prcesses r utcmes. Examples f pssible business caching research prjects wuld include, but are nt limited t: Market research, which lks at current trends, market segmentatin, cnsumer preferences, etc. Prgram evaluatins, which lk at prgram efficacy, cst, value and alternatives, etc. Case studies, which include in-depth analysis and examinatin f individuals, grups, r rganizatins, the cntext in which they reside and their characteristics with the purpse f better understanding an event r a situatin Survey research, which invlves asking clsed and/r pen-ended questins f research respndents in rder t answer ne r mre research questins Experimental research, which attempts t establish cause and effect thrugh manipulatin f cause (i.e., treatment) and cntrl f extraneus factrs Meta-analysis, which invlves the cmbining f statistical results f existing research utcmes t estimate the size f and relatinship between variables RESEARCH ETHICS: These are the cre principles guiding research frm its cnceptin and implementatin thrugh t the publicatin f results. The nature f the research questin(s), the type f data sught (qualitative r quantitative) as well as practical needs and researcher experience will dictate what the research will lk like and its methdlgy. Therefre, WABC prvides a set f cre research principles and guidelines that cver the essential elements f what cnstitutes valid and ethical research practices. C r e Principles Respect fr persns (treating participants with respect and cnsideratin) Cncern fr welfare (maintaining individual privacy and cntrl f infrmatin abut a persn) Justice (treating all participants fairly and equitably) Administratin Researchers wh wish t invlve WABC in their research must participate in WABC s Request fr Cnsideratin Prcess (see the Invlving WABC in Yur Research sectin belw) Researchers must identify and agree upn the wnership f research data and primary research materials Researchers have an ethical duty t safeguard frm misuse r wrngful disclsure all infrmatin entrusted t them, thus prtecting persnally identifying infrmatin and maintaining participant cnfidentiality. Therefre, researchers must safeguard all ptentially identifiable infrmatin fr the full infrmatin life cycle (i.e., cllectin, use, disseminatin, retentin and dispsal). Fr example, a researcher may hld dual rles as researcher and business cach, therapist, advisr r emplyer, thereby creating the ptential fr cnflicts, pwer imbalances r undue influence n relatinships with and the decisin making f participants (re: cnsent, independence and participatin). Therefre: Researchers must identify, minimize r therwise manage real r perceived cnflicts f interest Researchers must disclse t WABC and t research participants any real r perceived interpersnal, institutinal, financial, academic r ther cnflicts f interest Researchers must withdraw frm any research prject where the researcher rle unduly cmprmises participant trust Researchers must respect and prtect research-participant rights, which include infrmed cnsent and prtectin f privacy since the cllectin, use and disclsure f persnal infrmatin may negatively impact research participants r their rganizatins. Therefre, researchers must prvide: a research infrmatin sheet and cntract frm that clearly utlines the purpse f the research, expected benefits, expected duratin and prcedures, all reasnably freseeable risks t participants, hw the data will be used, hw the data will be prtected, any limits t cnfidentiality, any incentives t participate, participant rights as they pertain t declining t participate r t withdraw at any pint in the research prcess and researcher cntact infrmatin an area n the sheet that allws participants t frmally acknwledge (by signing r marking a bx) that they have read the research infrmatin sheet, that they fully understand their rights and that they agree t participate in the research as utlined in the research infrmatin sheet WABC GUIDELINES: Fr Researchers Investigating Business-Caching-Related Tpics (2016-SEP) 6

WABC s invlvement is highly valuable t yu as a researcher: WABC can prvide ur expert pinin f the relevancy and legitimacy f the fcus f yur inquiry WABC can prvide a disseminatin rute fr the results Determining Suitability Because f the wide range f research prjects being undertaken at any given time in the marketplace wrldwide, WABC has develped a vetting prcess t review and determine suitable prjects. (See the Request fr Cnsideratin Prcess belw.) Right t Refuse r Delay While WABC supprts engaging in r being affiliated with research, we have the right t refuse r delay research prpsals fr a number f reasns, including but nt limited t: Research prpsals that d nt meet WABC s and/r ther ethical research standards Research that cnflicts with WABC s ethical and prfessinal standards f practice Research that is deemed nt t be in the best interests f WABC r its members Research that may verlad WABC and/r its members within any given time perid Additinally, unless WABC has entered int a frmal agreement t c-partner r cspnsr a research prject, we d nt prvide research funding nr will we act as an ethics cmmittee fr any research prpsals submitted t r research accepted by WABC. 10 I N V O L VI N G WA B C I N Y O U R R E Q U E S T F O R C O N S I D E R A T I O N P R O C E S S If yu d like t request WABC s invlvement in yur research, please first review ur general prcess belw. The Request fr Cnsideratin prcess can take up t six weeks. 1. Researcher s WABC asking fr the Request t Invlve WABC in Yur Research frm. 2. WABC s the frm t the researcher usually within tw business days. 3. Researcher s WABC the fully cmpleted frm (alng with ther requested research-related infrmatin). 4. WABC cnducts an initial review f the infrmatin t determine suitability (see the Right t Refuse r Delay sectin abve). This initial review is usually cmpleted within 14 calendar days. (Please nte that even if yur research prpsal passes thrugh this initial review, this des nt mean WABC is cnfirming its invlvement.) 5. If the prpsal is deemed suitable t prceed t a secnd review, WABC assigns ne lead reviewer and up t tw referees t review yur infrmatin. While the lead reviewer will be aware f yur identity, yur name will nt be shared with the referees wh will als remain annymus t yu and will nt be engaging with yu. This secnd review is usually cmpleted within 30 calendar days. Once the review is cmpleted, the lead reviewer cllates the review findings, and WABC infrms yu f the decisin. 6. If the prpsal is nt deemed suitable t prceed t a secnd review, yu will be infrmed f the decisin and the reasn fr it by If WABC accepts yur prpsal, then depending n the nature f WABC s invlvement, yu and WABC wuld create the next steps tgether. Cnfidentiality f Material WABC takes cnfidentiality very seriusly. Strict cnfidentiality agreements have been signed by all individuals invlved in reviewing yur infrmatin. Retentin f Material WABC will keep the material yu submit in a secure nline archive. The material will nt be used fr anything ther than review purpses withut yur express written permissin.
