1 BBC PROMS INSPIRE YOUNG COMPOSERS COMPETITION 2017 TERMS AND CONDITIONS This cmpetitin is pen t UK residents nly (including UK residents in the Channel Islands and the Isle f Man). Overseas entries will nt be cnsidered. The cmpetitin is nt pen t emplyees, r the clse relatives f emplyees, f the BBC, their agencies r anyne else cnnected with the creatin r administratin f this cmpetitin. 2. Entries will be judged in three categries: Junir Categry (age 12-14): fr thse aged between 12 and 14 at the clsing date. Junir Categry (age 15-16): fr thse aged 15 and 16 at the clsing date. Senir Categry (age 17-18): fr thse aged 17 and 18 at the clsing date. 3. Entrants in the tw Junir categries (aged between 12 and 16 at the clsing date) must prvide signed cnsent frm a parent r guardian aged 18 r ver. 4. Entrants shuld refer t Appendix 1: Guidelines fr submitting a valid Entry fr full details n hw t submit a valid entry t the cmpetitin. 5. The deadline fr receipt f entries is Thursday 25 May Cmplete entries must be submitted by pst nly t: BBC Prms Inspire Yung Cmpsers Cmpetitin, PO Bx 7905, Lndn, W1A 1UL. This facility cannt accept any mail frm carriers ther than Ryal Mail. The PO Bx facility will terminate at clse f business n 25 May 2017 and any late entries will nt be accepted. In the event f a prlnged pstal strike, the perid fr submissin will be extended as apprpriate. Entries delivered in persn r with the incrrect pstage will nt be accepted. 6. There are n restrictins n instrumentatin, which may include vices, acustic and/r electrnic instruments and cmputer-generated sunds. 7. Entries accmpanied by related film, animatin r ther media will be accepted, but will be judged nly based n the music accrding t the criteria utlined in clause Only ne entry per Entrant will be accepted. If an Entrant shuld submit mre than ne entry, nly the first entry registered will be judged and any subsequent entries will be disregarded. Entrants can submit mre than ne mvement frm a larger wrk, prviding the mvements are submitted tgether as part f ne entry. 9. Entrants are nt permitted t re-submit an entry which has been selected as a winner r highly cmmended in a previus year s Inspire Yung Cmpsers Cmpetitin. Entrants wh have wn the cmpetitin in previus years are permitted t re-enter with a new entry. 10. If a schl r ther cllective is submitting n behalf f a number f Entrants, the schl r cllective must cmplete a separate entry frm fr each Entrant (please refer t Appendix 1: Guidelines fr submitting a valid Entry). 1

2 11. Entrants must warrant that their entries are riginal, entirely their wn wrk and d nt infringe cpyright r ther third party rights. The BBC reserves the right t cntact Entrants t verify this. Entries must nt cntain defamatry, bscene, vilent r any ther material that wuld deem the entry unsuitable fr bradcast by the BBC. 12. Entries will nt be returned. Entrants shuld keep a cpy fr their wn recrds. 13. Entries will be registered and verified by a member f BBC prductin team t ensure that they cmply with the terms and cnditins f this cmpetitin. Any invalid entries will be remved frm the judging prcess at this pint (see Appendix 1). 14. Entries will underg the fllwing judging prcess: Stage 1 Each valid entry will be assessed using the criteria set ut in clause 15 by 2 f the 4 members f the stage 1 judging team. Each judge will be requested t submit a shrtlist f up t 10 entries frm each categry. Judges will assess entries independently and withut cnferring. All entries that have been shrtlisted twice (i.e. by 2 ut f 4 judges) will be submitted fr stage 2. Stage 2 A judging panel f at least 5 judges, including the 4 members f the judging team wh have submitted the shrtlisted entries, will meet and listen t the shrtlisted entries. The judging panel will select up t tw winners and up t three highly cmmended awardees frm each categry, by agreement, based n the criteria utlined in clause 15. If the final judging panel require any clarificatin in relatin t an entry, the Entrant will be cntacted at this stage. 15. The judges will assess each valid entry in relatin t the fllwing criteria: Cmpsitinal idea Originality Creativity Apprpriate technical ability 16. The BBC's decisin in the selectin f winning and highly cmmended awardees is final. N crrespndence will be entered int. Unsuccessful r disqualified applicants will nt be ntified. 17. Winning and highly cmmended Entrants will be ntified by , telephne r pst by 3 July If, after reasnable attempts t cntact a winner, the cmmunicatin has nt been acknwledged, the BBC reserves the right t ffer their prize t a highly cmmended Entrant. The details f winning and highly cmmended Entrants will be available n the BBC Prms website by 10 July Winning entries will be perfrmed by prfessinal musicians and bradcast n BBC Radi 3 (subject t technical and peratinal circumstances). Winners will receive a cmmissin frm the BBC which may be bradcast by the BBC (subject t quality, suitability and technical and peratinal circumstances). They will attend wrkshps with the Prms team and prfessinal cmpsers and/r musicians t wrk n their 2

3 cmmissined cmpsitin. The cmmissin is part f the prize and therefre winners will nt be paid fr the cmmissin. The BBC will refund reasnable travel csts t and frm the cmmissins wrkshps fr winners, and if aged under 18, fr ne parent/guardian t accmpany them if necessary. 19. Winning Entrants will be expected t take part in pst-cmpetitin publicity, if required. 20. Highly cmmended entries may be perfrmed by prfessinal musicians and bradcast (subject t technical and peratinal circumstances). 21. The prize is as stated and cannt be deferred r transferred. There will be n cash alternatives. 22. Entrants supplying recrdings/scres/written descriptins selected as winners r highly cmmended and thse wh receive cmmissins frm the BBC agree t grant the BBC an exclusive licence t use such entries and cmmissins in all media fr the purpses f the cmpetitin including withut limitatin transmissin n radi and streaming n the internet and making cpies r new recrdings, if required. This will be dne n the BBC s standard frm cntracts. In cnnectin with BBC's planned usage f the entries and cmmissins, Entrants must ensure that: a) wrks submitted are riginal b) any ther musicians perfrming have agreed t the recrding s use fr all purpses f the cmpetitin. Please nte prfessinal musicians' perfrmances n entries and cmmissins bradcast / streamed n the internet will be dealt with in accrdance with the BBC's agreements with the Musicians' Unin r under such ther arrangements as nrmally apply. 23. Entrant s infrmatin will be held by the BBC Prms and Lndn Perfrming Grups Learning team; it will nt be passed t any third parties. Infrmatin abut Entrants participatin in this cmpetitin will be held fr tw years, fr the purpse f recrding their participatin and cntacting Entrants abut it. If Entrants chse t sign up fr the Get Invlved newsletter, name and cntact details will be held until Entrants unsubscribe frm the service. The BBC reserves the right t cancel this cmpetitin at any stage. 26. Entrants are reminded that their participatin in BBC cmpetitins (including winning r receiving a highly cmmended award) cannt be used in cmmercial advertising r prmtins, t attract external funding, t lbby r campaign, r t attract dnatins. 3

The BBC des nt accept respnsibility fr any technical failure, malfunctin r any ther prblem with any server, internet access system, prgramme sftware, the pstal service r therwise which may result in any entry being lst, late r nt prperly registered r recrded. Entries that deviate frm the terms and cnditins f this cmpetitin will be disqualified. 29. The prmter f this cmpetitin is the British Bradcasting Crpratin and these terms and cnditins are gverned by the laws f England and Wales. 30. 5 APPENDIX 1: GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING A VALID ENTRY We ve put tgether sme helpful guidelines n hw t submit a valid entry t the cmpetitin. Please nte that any Entrant wh des nt cmply with the terms and cnditins f the cmpetitin (including these guidelines) will be disqualified. Standard gegraphic charges frm landlines and mbiles will apply. Each valid entry must include all f the fllwing. Yu shuld submit everything tgether in ne envelpe r parcel. 1. A cmpleted entry frm: Entry frms are available t dwnlad and print frm bbc.c.uk/prms. On the frm yu must state: The rigin (website, bk, pem etc.) f any text used The rigin (website, sequencing package etc.) f any pre-prgrammed audi r MIDI lps. If it is derived frm sftware, it must be a playable recrding, rather than the riginal file. Yu shuld submit tw separate recrdings e.g. 2 CDs, 2 memry sticks r ther devices. Please ensure that any labelling applied t a CD, memry stick etc. des nt interfere with playback and that it wrks n relevant devices (e.g. CD player, cmputer). D nt include yur name n yur recrding. Instead yu can include yur initials and the name f yur piece. 3. Tw cpies f a ntated, tabbed r graphic scre: Entrants can use traditinal music ntatin, tab fr specific instruments r create a detailed graphic scre using symbls. Entrants may use a cmbinatin f ntated, graphic and tabbed in their scre, if it is necessary t ntate their piece. Regardless f the type f ntatin used, Entrants must submit a full scre (i.e. nt individual parts) Scres must be presented n A4 paper using as many sheets as are necessary, and preferably presented single-sided, unbund and in a clear plastic sleeve.
