Abstract This dissertation formalizes a type of market knowledge, implied in the literature, which is highly localized and transitory within dynamic markets. To attempt to build theory upon prior research from Austrian economics and marketing on the processes of competition, the concept of ephemeral market knowledge is introduced as a type of fleeting, context-specific market knowledge. While the literature is quite limited, a working definition of ephemeral knowledge is developed and its relevance to marketing and the competitive market process is supported. Because theoretical rationale from the literature is incomplete, much ambiguity remains. Therefore, the dissertation attempts to build a theory of ephemeral market knowledge within competitive marketing practices through a multiple-phase study with marketing practitioners and decision makers.
