The global objective is to reduce municipal pollution and nutrients in the Adriatic Sea and the Danube Basin. The sub-objectives are: (i) develop the Wastewater Improvement Plan; (ii) further strengthen the Joint BiH/Croatian Working group, with coordination from Serbia and Montenegro to implement the Wastewater Improvement Plan; (iii) develop and implement high-priority, low-cost water capital investments; and (iv) disseminate information in BiH and the region for replication of project activities at other priority sites in the Balkans. Overall, project implementation is progressing well after outstanding issues have been resolved. Because of recently approved funds to co-finance sub-projects in Zivinice and Mostar, the project closing date has been extended to enable completion of all activities supported by the project. The new project closing date is August 28, 2012. Based on the achievements of the project to date, it is likely that the project will achieve fully its development objectives by the closing date. Rehabilitation of the Trnovo Waste Water Treatment Plan (WWTP) and Odzak WWTP has been completed and plants are fully operational. First phase of rehabilitation of Zivinice WWTP is underway and Mostar WWTP is expected to start early in 2012. Three major studies (i) a study on all further actions for a Wastewater Improvement Plan for reducing River Pollution (WIS)), (ii) a study of the Biological Monitoring of the Rivers and Lakes/Reservoirs in BiH (BMS), and (iii) Feasibility study on low-cost, natural treatment of wastewater have been completed, and finding and results of the feasibility study on low cost natural treatment of wastewater will be presented at a regional conference scheduled for next year.
