2 The GEF project is assisting the isimangaliso Authority to improve the environmental and ecological functioning of the St. Lucia Park, particularly to identify a long-term solution to the complex hydrological problems of the Lake St. Lucia system, and to create sustainable economic and related employment opportunities for local community members in a potential world-class eco-tourism destination. More broadly, the overall mandate of the isimangaliso Authority is to address the twin challenges of biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction, through a management approach that seeks to integrate conservation with socio-economic development. The project cost is US$21.7 million, of which GEF funding is US $9 million. The isimangaliso Authority is making a complementary investment of Rand 125 million (approximately US$16.7 million) into its tourism product and a tertiary education program for youth from the neighboring communities of the Park. A mid-term review mission was carried out during this reporting period (February and 18-22, 2013). Substantial progress has been achieved in each of the components. Based on the progress found during the mission project implementation performance was rated as Satisfactory, overall and for each component. Progress towards Global Environmental Objective (GEO) was also rated Satisfactory.
