Ecomic importance for rural communities (formal and informal) High social value attributed to ownership of livestock Undeveloped and n-transparent market chains At the community level Unkwn community expectations Lack of sustainability in the farming systems in the Lowveld, Human/wildlife conflict (crop & livestock losses, poaching, encroaching, habitat loss)
3 CLLP Overall Objectives CLLP Specific Objectives Supporting the livelihoods of communities in the periphery of GNP by supporting the animal health surveillance and exploring market strategies for livestock production Animal Health is a key issue to mitigate negative perceptions of wildlife/livestock livestock/human interface By supporting the diptank system: Obj.1 To describe the structure of the livestock population Obj.2 To understand the current production strategies and opportunities of the small cattle holders. Livestock densities in the periphery of GNP should be sustainable for the habitat Obj.3 To describe their perceptions and expectations towards the wildlife resources and animal health issues CLLP Methodology CLLP CLLP Study area Providing chemicals for dipping on a regular basis in one Animal Helath Centre (AHC) covering 1 diptanks between 15 and 2 heads of cattle in collaboration with the veterinary services Running questionnaires with farmers at the diptanks every month.
