1 USDA Farm Data for the HICAHS Region The six-state HICAHS region includes Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. Through an agreement with the Southwest Center for Agricultural Health, Injury Prevention, and Education (based in Tyler, TX) HICAHS has expanded its dairy industry activities to New Mexico and Texas. Dairy industry data from New Mexico and Texas can be found in the notes section. Quick Stats on the HICAHS Region In the HICAHS Region there are 156,901 farms and ranches employing over 144,000 workers Over $35 billion in cash receipts generated for agricultural products, generating 9% of the nation s agricultural cash receipts. 13% of the nation s cattle feedlots. 12.7% of all U.S. dairy receipts come from the New Mexico, Texas, and the HICAHS Region. 215 million acres of farmland, with the average agricultural operation having 1,373 acres. This is 24% of the nation s farmland! The sale of cattle and calves generates the most revenue for the HICAHS Region, generating $9.4 billion in cash receipts. This is 14.2% of all cattle and calf sales in the U.S. As part of the Breadbasket of America, one-third of U.S. wheat production (measured by cash receipts) is from the HICAHS region hicahs@colostate.edu 1
