1 NANOMATERIALS SIG COMBINED CANDIDATE INFORMATION Officer Election For Chair: Hyunjoon Kong, PhD Hyunjoon Kong is an associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and a Centennial Scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign (UIUC), He also holds affiliation with the Department of Bioengineering, Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, and Neuroscience Program. He received his engineering education from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Ph. D. 2001), and performed post-doctoral research at the University of Michigan and Harvard University. He joined the University of Illinois in During the academic life, he received several awards including the Scientist Development Grant from the American Heart Association, the Career Award from NSF, Center for Advanced Study Fellowship, and the UIUC Engineering Dean s Award for Research Excellence. Up to dates, he published 97 papers in various peer-reviewed journals. The NIH, NSF, AHA, ARO, TATRC, Korean Institute of industrial technology have funded his research. Dr. Kong is willing to build a more intensive, interactive community of nanobiomaterials to better understand and engineer biological systems and also advance quality of clinical diagnosis and treatments. In the past, he organized multiple symposia in various bio-related conferences. He also served as a chair of Dental/Craniofacial Biomaterials SIG and a treasure of cell therapeutics SIG of SFB. Tao Lowe, PhD Dr. Tao Lowe is currently an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biomedical Engineering at University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Bioengineering, and Materials Science and Engineering, and Co Director of the Integrated Graduate Degree Molecular Toxicology Program at Pennsylvania State University. She received her Ph.D. with an Eximia Cum Laude from the University of Helsinki, Finland in 1998, and conducted her two years postdoctoral research in the Chemical Engineering Department at University of Wisconsin, Madison.

2 Dr. Lowe s research is focused on biomaterials for translational research, and she is an expert in bionanotechnology, drug delivery and regenerative medicine. She has been publishing high level peer-reviewed papers and receiving funding from NIH, DOD, Coulter Foundation, JDRF, FHI360/Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, etc. She has presented more than 130 presentations and 60 invited talks in academia, industry and international conference. She has trained ca. 60 students, including PhD, MD, MD/PhD, PharmD, and PharmD/PhD. The impact of her research has been recognized by the Royal Society of Chemistry s magazine, Chemistry in Britain, the Research Penn State Magazine, and the ARVO Annual Meeting. She has received numerous honors and awards, including the Early Career Award in Translational Research from the Coulter Foundation. Dr. Lowe is a peer reviewer for 36 refereed journals, and serves on the editorial boards of 11 international journals. She is a grant reviewer for more than 60 study sections including NIH, NSF, DOD, EPA, USED, NSERC, ETHZ, etc. Dr. Lowe has been an active member of SFB for many years and helped to organize the Advanced in Ocular Drug Delivery symposium and the Advances in Ophthalmic Biomaterials session for the 2014 SFB annual meeting. In addition, Dr. Lowe has extensive experience in organizing meetings related to biomaterials, nanotechnology and regenerative medicine. She has serviced on the committees of a variety of societies including AIChE, ACS, CRS, BMES, MMC, ARVO, AAPS, etc., and chaired more than 40 sessions. She was 2010 Chairelect of the Biomaterials Area of the AIChE, and is currently Chair-Elect of the Nanotechnology Focus Group of the AAPS. As the Chair of the Nanomaterials SIG Officer, Dr. Lowe s goals are to help the SIG to create new initiatives, fundraising, and programming opportunities in the fields of innovation, intellectual property, and healthcare. Her objectives are to encourage emphasis on nanobiomaterials education and graduate research; support opportunities for scientists who are interested in nanobiomaterials to exchange information and ideas through meetings, seminars, courses and publications; foster programs in encouraging young people to choose careers in fields related to nanobiomaterials, and catalyze collaboration among academia, industry, and hospital. Daniel J. Siegwart, PhD Dr. Daniel J. Siegwart is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He has served as the Nanomaterials SIG Secretary / Treasurer since 2012, where he assisted with SIG planning, budgeting, social events, and conference programming. Dan obtained his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon University under the guidance of Prof. Krzysztof Matyjaszewski, where he worked on Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) for biomedical applications. In order to apply his background in polymer chemistry to translational medical applications, Dan conducted postdoctoral research with Prof. Robert Langer at MIT and focused on

3 combinatorial, high-throughput methods in material discovery. There, he directed a project reporting the first large library of 1,536 structurally defined core-shell nanoparticles that identified key chemical functionalities for designing polymers for nucleic acid delivery. Dan received the Joseph A. Solomon Memorial Fellowship, an NSF East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Fellowship, a NIH NRSA postdoctoral Fellowship, a Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) first time faculty award, and the 2014 Friends of the Cancer Center Research Award. At UT Southwestern, the Siegwart Research Group s long-term goals are to develop improved materials for effective sirna and mirna delivery to tumors, to discover turn on cancer imaging probes, and to globally understand how the physical and chemical properties of materials affect interactions with biological systems in vitro and in vivo in the context of improving cancer therapies. If elected as President, I would focus on growing our web and social networking presence; expanding industrial / company involvement; finding new ways to bring useable funds into the SIG; investigating industrial sponsorship of social events, sessions, and awards; developing creative mechanisms to connect graduate students and postdocs to companies for employment opportunities; developing ways to increase Nano SIG involvement in newsletters; and developing social events / networking events (Nano SIG sponsored or as co-sponsored with like-minded SIGs). For Vice Chair: Huinan Liu, PhD Dr. Huinan Liu currently is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, the interdisciplinary Materials Science and Engineering Program, and the Stem Cell Center at the University of California at Riverside (UCR). She received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University in 2008 and her M.S. and B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Purdue University and the University of Science and Technology in Beijing. Her research involves design, fabrication, and evaluation of biodegradable materials and nanostructures for guided tissue regeneration and controlled drug delivery. Of particular interest is to understand cell-material and tissue-material interactions in 2D and 3D. She has provided 47 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 30 conference proceeding papers, 2 books, 10 invited book chapters, 40 invited talks, and over 100 conference presentations and abstracts. She has served as a reviewer for scientific journals, such as Biomaterials, Acta Biomaterialia, Nanomedicine, International Journal of Nanomedicine, Nanoscale, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research (Part A and Part B), Tissue Engineering, etc. Dr. Liu is the recipient of over 20 awards, e.g Materials Science and Engineering C Young Researcher Award, 2012 American Heart Association National Scientist Development Award, 2012 Hellman Faculty Fellowship, 2011 International Journal of Nanomedicine Merit Award, 2009 Acta Award for her paper published in Acta Biomaterialia, 2008 ACerS GEMS award, 2008

4 Joukowsky Family Foundation Outstanding Dissertation Award, and 2008 Sigma Xi Outstanding Graduate Research Award. Dr. Liu served as a symposium organizer and session chair for Materials Research Society (MRS) annual meetings, American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) annual meetings, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) annual meetings, Society for Biomaterials (SFB) annual meetings, World Biomaterials Congress (WBC), etc. I was actively involved in the meetings and activities of Nanomaterials SIG (Nano SIG) since it was launched in Nanomaterials SIG attracted growing interests from the biomaterials community and the membership has been continuously growing. I served as the Secretary/Treasurer and Program Chair for Nano SIG over the past four years, mainly responsible for budgeting of the SIG, maintaining minutes of SIG meetings, launching Nano SIG website and communication with members, representing the SIG interests within the programs of SFB meetings, publishing in the Biomaterials Forum and SIGnal, and providing service to SFB such as reviewing program proposals and abstracts for annual meetings. After successfully serving as the Secretary/Treasurer and Program Chair, I am running for the position of Vice Chair for Nanomaterials SIG. My past four years of service for the Nano SIG have prepared me well for taking the responsibilities of this position. I am very familiar with the duties of the Chair and will do my best to assist the Chair, help the coming Secretary/Treasurer and Program Chair get familiar with Nano SIG activities, and continue to provide other service to SFB whenever needed. My past service to SFB and Nano SIG has led me to a unique position to be a successful Vice Chair for Nano SIG. For Secretary/Treasurer: Tolou Shokuhfar, PhD Dr. Tolou Shokuhfar is currently an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Eng at Michigan Tech and holds adjunct professorship at the College of Dentistry at University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). She is the director of In-situ Nanomedicine lab at Michigan Tech where she is supervising one postdoctoral researcher and 5 other PhD students. She is a recipient of 2014 NSF CAREER Award investigating the biomineralization process at nanoscale in protein nanoparticles. She is particularly interested in nanostructured bone/dental implants with enhanced biocompatibility, antimicrobial benefits, and drug delivery as well as real time Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy of biomolecules and living cells in hydrated conditions. Along with her colleagues at UIC, she has co-founded the Institute for Biomaterials, Tribocirrosion, and Nanomedicine (IBTN) that enables collaboration between UIC, Rush, and MTU with UNESP in Brazil. She currently holds the treasurer position at the TMS Biomaterials Committee and is a member at the Biomedical Engineering Society and Society for Biomaterials (SFB). My vision is to contribute to the advance of scientific knowledge in nanomaterials for

5 clinical applications. To this end, the participation in SIG committee through officer positions will allow me to engage more effectively with the committee members to pursue the conduction of workshops, meetings, and other mechanisms for research and education of our members. The treasurer position will be an interesting challenge to learn about financial aspects of this committee and applying this knowledge for the healthy growth of our scientific and educational activities. For Program Chair: Arash Aslani, MS Arash Aslani is a scientific staff member at N2 Biomedical. He has been involved in developing new methods and applications to improve performance of medical device implants using N2 Biomedical s surface modification technology. Prior to his transfer to N2 Biomedical in 2013, he was a materials scientist at the Biomedical Division of Spire Corporation, where he performed a wide range of research on antimicrobial coating, biomaterials, and surface modification for applications ranging from orthopedic to high performance medical coatings. At Spire, Mr. Aslani was responsible for developing Spire s proprietary IonTite coating technology. He was also involved in a Phase I NIH program for processing nanostructured porous silicon as a substrate for neural electrodes for better biocompatibility. Mr. Aslani has developed a coating technology for nano- and microstructured hydroxyapatite with controlled release of bone morphogenic protein for dental application. Use of nanotechnology concepts to develop a new approach toward creating highly effective materials is an important goal for biomaterials research community. As the program chair of Nanomaterials SIG, I would like to continue promoting SIG s main objectives including the translation of nanomaterial s research activities to medical implants and working toward better understanding of regulatory approval and biocompatibility of nanomaterials. My vision is to build a good collaboration environment between academia, research institute and industry to promote nanomaterials for future clinical applications.
