3 Incentives ROADS, as part of the Transportation Department, need to be a key contributor to the quality of life in the City of Calgary through effective management of the City roads infrastructure. This can be achieved by putting an Asset Management System in Place. 3

4 Asset Management The critical Questions What do we own? Where are they? How much are they worth? What is the average age of our infrastructure? What is the estimated life left? What is its spatial extension? What is its condition? How are the assets spatially related and how to make the best use of these relationships? What needs to be done, when and how much will it cost? Where should we invest (new vs. renewal)? 4

5 Current Status at ROADS AM perspective Pavement Managers use the MPMS system to make decisions on which pavement sections to rehabilitate, when and what treatments to apply MPMS 5

6 Current Status at ROADS AM perspective Bridges are handled through a Bridge Management System (BMS) that tracks all bridge components. BMS provides inspection programs and assists in developing the maintenance plans BMS 6

17 GIS Data Model Requirements Capable of instantiating assets: Direct manual entry Using predefined data entry forms in GIS Importing from other sources (e.g., CAD files) Handling asset attributes, as instructed by Functional Areas Providing and maintaining spatial and non spatial relationships between assets Keeping track of asset history (e.g., Asset Events) Enable to store/retrieve asset attachments (such as photos) Enable to communicate with WM component of the Asset management System Enable modification and retirement of the assets (No Deletion) Enable grouping assets as required by the WM 17

23 Asset Lifecycle From GIS perspective Assets are created in GIS (As Design) and remain there A Work Management (WM) instance of the asset is created in WM component All work related activities are done in the WM component Updating the status or asset attributes can be done through WM or directly in GIS Always the GIS and WM instances of the asset are kept synchronized The assets can be retired through GIS and a history of work and a history of the asset will be maintained for future analysis/reporting 23

24 Base map data In addition to the Asset Data Model, an underlying base map is needed An in house TransNet database was designed to provide the base map data Versioning (Temporal data) is handled through TransNet Application Modules TransNet also provides Updatable Views to the WM component 24
