4 Who we are Piling Contractors is Australia s premier specialist foundation engineering company. With a network of offices, fabrication and maintenance facilities around the country, the company s operations are fully supported by local expertise and resources. We have a long history of involvement in some of Australia s most challenging foundation construction projects including Brisbane s Airport Link and foundations for desalination plants in Perth, Sydney and on the Gold Coast, as well as mine infrastructure and resource projects in remote locations. Our team of more than 250 people includes qualified engineers, specialist operators, designers and mechanics among others. Several employees have been with us for 25 years and the company s foremen alone have accumulated over 400 years of foundation construction experience. We value the experience and stability of our workforce and, at the same time, we welcome new recruits and graduates with whom we can share our knowledge. 6 What we do Piling Contractors delivers outstanding results for our customers on civil, construction, building and mining projects anywhere throughout Australia. In doing so, we offer design and construction solutions as well as provide value engineered, alliance partnering and construct only services. We take pride in having built quality foundations for many of the country s iconic structures such as the Gateway Bridge Upgrade over the Brisbane River, the high-rise Soul apartments on the Gold Coast and the M7 Western Sydney Motorway. Once a project is completed, the foundations we have built can neither be seen nor inspected, yet they are required to perform for design lives of up to 300 years. This is a measure of our clients faith in the reliable, qualityassured work we deliver. 8 In the area of team excellence, Piling Contractors has shown a significant commitment to safety, quality and environment that has been marked by a hassle-free performance for their piling works at Teven, Emigrant Creek South and Cumbulum sites. Tony Stante, Alliance Project Manager Ballina Bypass Alliance Our environmental commitment Piling Contractors commitment to minimising our environmental impact is being realised as we strive to exceed industry standards. Site specific environmental management plans are established for projects and control measures are put in place to minimise dust, noise and air pollution. Other initiatives such as materials recycling and the use of low emission and organic oils are also employed. Every effort is taken to safeguard terrestrial and aquatic flora and fauna and no work is undertaken in potentially sensitive areas until appropriate permits are obtained. Even then, great care is taken to minimise any disturbance in the construction area. On some sites the protection of archaeology and cultural heritage is essential and we understand the need to work around even the unexpected discovery of any area of high conservation and heritage value. As a matter of course, marine or river works include the use of measures such as floating booms, biodegradeable oils, mobile spoil bins and silt curtains to minimise the impact of our works. When appropriate, we can provide a full scale treatment plant to handle polluted groundwater, and we have developed an innovative groundwater level monitoring system to further reduce environmental impact. Even within our own offices, we are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the introduction of energy and water saving devices and recycling programs. Caring for the environment has become part of the Piling Contractors culture. 12 Our history Piling Contractors began as a one rig operation in Queensland in 1983, a far cry from our position today as Australia s leading specialist foundation contractor. With a single crawler crane and operating from rented premises, the company s work consisted largely of the installation of driven piles. Shortly afterwards, a drill mount for the crane was purchased and Government contracts started to flow. A strategy of acquiring grouting and piling competitors fuelled the company s growth and eventually the rented premises were purchased and a head office established. The next significant extension of Piling Contractors capability was the decision to undertake work over water. To offer this service the company acquired a modular barge. This, along with our substantial holding of falsework, still differentiates Piling Contractors from its competitors. The company s expansion continued with establishment of a New South Wales Division in 1999 and the Western Australian Division in In that same year, Piling Contractors was acquired by the Keller Group, one of the world s largest specialist ground engineering contractors and, having been established in 1860, one of the oldest. Just as with Piling Contractors, Keller s principles are the delivery of engineering excellence and a commitment to continual innovation. Regular in-house and external training is provided to ensure skill sets are updated, current certifications maintained and new technologies employed. 16 Technical excellence At Piling Contractors, technical excellence is not achieved by accident. It is part of our culture and the result of a commitment to quality at every level of the organisation. Our in-house design teams make use of the best analysis techniques and latest data available, and between them have many years of experience in a wide variety of soils, rock and methods. This expertise gives us the ability to design and detail alternative, cost-effective solutions for our clients. We are helping to build the future of our industry by lecturing in Geomechanics at undergraduate level and delivering other lectures at various universities around the country. Our staff publish and present technical papers at local, regional and international seminars and conferences and we maintain a strong ongoing commitment to research and development. We take a lead role in the technical activities of the Piling and Foundation Specialists Federation and a high proportion of our engineering staff are Fellows and Members of the major national and international professional institutions.
