1 BRIDGE MAINTENACE EMERGENCY PROJECTS
2 PILE DRIVING ANALYZER (PDA) Bridge Maintenance works with the Geotechnical section to determine pile capacity Bridge Maintenance collects the PDA restrike data required for analysis Geotechnical section performs a CAPWAP analysis to determine pile capacity The results usually prevent piles from needing to be spliced which saves on construction costs
3 LEVEE REPAIR The North Lafourche Levee District asked for assistance in repairing a levee that had a sand boil Statewide Bridge Crew repaired the levee by driving sheet pile to block the sand boil It s been determined that a vibratory hammer is a MUST in order to drive sheet pile In the past, sheet pile has been driven using an air impact hammer which would take approximately 30 minutes to an hour to drive just ONE sheet pile The vibratory hammer will drive a sheet pile in a approximately 30 seconds Use of a vibratory hammer saves on construction time

5 US 90 OVER BAYOU RAMOS Type III girders developed shear cracks Two theories were suspected as causes: 1. Bad rigidity of the continuity diaphragms 2. Bad concrete was used to construct the girders
6 SHEAR CRACKS
7 Drilling the Core Samples First Step: Locating a drill that can obtain the size sample needed for testing. Second Step: Designing and building an apparatus that will enable a drill used vertically to drill horizontally Third Step: Locating rebar in the girders and bridge deck. Accomplished by referencing As- Builts and Non-Destructive Testing using a Multi-Scanner. Fourth Step: Hooking the drill onto the girder Fifth Step: Drill Baby Drill Results: A Beautiful 7 inch Core Sample End Note: Testing of Core Samples showed the that the concrete was good.

12 EMERGENCY REPAIRS FENDER REPAIRS Marine Collision with the vertical lift bridge in Perry, LA damaged the fender system Statewide Bridge Crew removed the damaged portion and replaced it with new timber piles and new timber whalers Obstacles: Marine Traffic

15 EMERGENCY REPAIRS FENDER REPAIRS Marine collision with the movable swing span bridge in Adeline, LA damaged the fender system Statewide Water Crew repaired the fender system. Routine repairs for this crew.
16 EMERGENCY REPAIRS Portal Repairs O.K. Allen Bridge in Alexandria was hit, damaging a portal. Jay Carnell, P.E., that s C as in Charlie, A as in Alpha designed a new one. Once it was fabricated Statewide Bridge Crew installed the new portal. Piece of Cake!

20 EMERGENCY REPAIRS Portal Repairs Vertical lift span bridge in Perry, LA was hit, damaging a portal. Jay Carnell, P.E., designed a replacement. This guy is an engineering deity. Statewide Bridge Crew installed the portal, easy as pie. They re pros at this, those portals get hit all the time.

23 EMERGENCY REPAIRS RETAINING WALL The embankment under the swing bridge in Charenton, LA was washing away The statewide bridge crew constructed a retaining wall using steel H piles and timber planks The wing walls were constructed by driving sheet pile

26 EMERGENCY REPAIRS Palmetto, LA 10 Bridge needed to be strengthened to raise the load posting 9 steel helper bents were installed in each span at mid-span Obstacles: 7 of the 9 bents were over water, work barge had to be used to float the caps under the bridge Percent of the job required welding: Caps welded to the piles, cross-bracing welded to the piles, web stiffeners welded to the cap under each girder

30 EMERGENCY REPAIRS LaRose, LA Pontoon Apron Replacement Statewide Bridge Crew fabricated a new apron and installed it 3 day operation
31 AFTER INSTALLATION
32 EMERGENCY REPAIRS Hopedale BP Oil Spill Relief Station was located in Hopedale, LA. The bridge located on LA 624 was load posted and not able to handle the equipment loads that were crossing. The deck was in poor condition, but closure was not an option. Statewide Bridge Crew fabricated a temporary 7 span timber deck in a weekend. The new deck was hauled, a few spans at a time from Port Allen, LA to Hopedale, LA. The crew had a 12 hour (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) window to install the deck. The job was a success! Fisherman and Oil Relief workers were delighted.

39 BRIDGE REPLACEMENTS US 61 Bridge Replacement Originally a Single Span bridge which had an abutment failure The approach slab and the bridge deck were jammed against each other and the bridge rail was the only element holding the bridge in place Statewide Bridge Crew to the Rescue Installed a 5 span bridge in 16 days
