3 Rainwater Systems Introduction Ward Building Components are a leading supplier of all types of steel components to the UK construction industry. The Ward product range has evolved from over 40 years of experience in steel framed building design. The rainwater drainage systems have been formulated to combine hydraulic efficiency economy of design and practical site assembly. This experience of metal building construction allows us to offer a flexible service on design and manufacturing both standard and custom made items to suit the specifiers requirements. Valley and Boundary wall gutters are manufactured from galvanised steel with complimentary accessories to suit the individual project requirements. A range of standard profiles are available, these sections have been designed to cater for the majority of steel framed building applications and are offered with options on finish specification. Where design flexibility is needed custom made profiles in steel and in certain situations Aluminium, can be designed and manufactured to specific dimensions, a full design and technical service is available for both standard and custom rainwater systems. The Ward Streamline eaves gutter system meets today s need for an attractive yet economical fascia type gutter to compliment modern metal sidewall cladding profiles. Neat square downpipes and optional matching verge trim complete the system. Although Ward Rainwater systems are shown on steel framed buildings the construction methods and design of the systems ensure that they can be used to equal effect on concrete or timber structures. All products are manufactured using modern automated manufacturing facilities. All Ward Building Components manufacturing facilities comply with the ISO 9002 Quality Management System. 4 Rainwater Systems Design Concepts The design of Eaves, Boundary and Valley gutters on pitched roof metal clad buildings is based on the British Standard code of practice BS6367. This code of Practice provides advice on the best methods of designing gutters, gutter outlets and rainwater pipes along with advice on materials and construction techniques. The performance of the gutter and the capacity of the outlet to discharge water freely is particularly important with internal gutters where overflow into the building would be unacceptable under the prescribed operating conditions. The basis of the hydraulic and practical design principles assumed in the code are summarised as follows:- The Gutters are assumed to be laid nominally level. The Gutters are uniform in cross section being of a box or trapezoidal shape. Frictional effects on discharge are disregarded for certain outlet conditions. Weir overflows are recommended to internal gutters. Overflow of gutters in storm situations is not critical in externally mounted Eaves gutters. Strength of the gutter must be considered should it be needed to provide walkway access for maintenance in service. In terms of construction, Valley and boundary wall type gutters are manufactured from galvanised steel not less than 2.0 mm thickness and profiled to wrap around the steel supporting purlins. In the roof construction process these gutters are the first component of the roofing process to be laid and provide a natural access method along the building perimeter. Normally for the gutter to function as a walkway it should have a minimum overall width of 300 mm for boundary and 500 mm for valley gutters. The starting point for any gutter design is to correctly estimate the amount of water falling onto the roof. Rainfall rates vary throughout the country and are recorded on a statistical basis. The code of practice outlines a process, estimating the rainfall intensity, dependant on geographical location and the risk of the intensity being exceeded during the life of the building. 6 Rainwater Systems Specification, Design & Dimensions Gutter Outlets The correct number, positioning, size and type of outlets are all factors that affect the drainage performance of the rainwater system. As a general rule it is good practice to allow at least two outlets in any one length of gutter. Outlets are designed to achieve the required discharge rate based on the head of water in the gutter. In order to optimise the design of the system 4 types of outlet may be used. Straight outlets are normally used for eaves, valley and boundary wall conditions where design conditions are not onerous. Tapered outlets offer best performance and economy for most valley and boundary wall gutters. The opening in the sole of the gutter tapers into a standard diameter downpipe of 100 or 150 mm. Box receivers are used for demanding flow conditions where practical conditions such as restrictions to downpipe position may otherwise restrict system performance. Syphonic outlets employ design methods outside of that described in BS6367 and are usually designed and supplied by specialists. They operate on the principle that the drain pipes flow full of water by not allowing air to enter the system. Syphonic outlets are easily incorporated into the Ward gutter range. Straight outlet (round), welded or loose Tapered outlet, welded or loose Weir overflow outlets positioned at the ends of the gutter cannot prevent flooding of the gutter profile but are recommended, since they can provide warning of blocked outlets or other problems with the gutter system. Gratings or wire balloons to protect the rainwater pipe are a potential source of blockage and are not recommended for conventional systems. Rainwater Pipes Rainwater pipes are normally circular in section and made of PVC or Aluminium and supported by brackets to the structure typically at 2.0 m centres. Bends and joints should be kept to a minimum and horizontal pipe runs should have falls and be designed to normal hydraulic principles. Syphonic systems involve greater design pressures and require special considerations. Typical Applications Roof cladding Valley gutter Outlet Specification of the galvanising weight is dependant on the exposure conditions and required life span of the building. In certain cases post galvanised gutters may be specified, this finish, due to the coating process, will require a minimum thickness of 3mm. Steel gutters of normal design dimensions require a minimum recommended thickness of 2mm. Experience has shown that gutters with sole dimensions in excess of 450 mm will require 3mm minimum thickness. Durability The cost and probability of maintenance will influence the choice of material and the galvanising thickness. Black bitumen coatings or similar are required on all steel gutters. These should be applied after about 12 months weathering of the new galvanised steel and will require regular re-application to remain effective. To minimise on site painting, the gutters can be supplied with a factory applied protective coating which includes manufacturer s performance warranty. Advice on periods to first maintenance and environmental conditions is outlined in British Steels Galvatite technical manual. Gutter Accessories Gutter accessories such as weir outlets, stop ends, jointing mastics and joint connectors are supplied using materials that are the same as or complimentary to the gutter profile used. Custom made accessories can be made to suit each unique building application. Stop-ends Section 11 - Rainwater Systems & Ancillaries Box receivers Materials Gutters are normally fabricated from pregalvanised steel to BS EN Two galvanising thicknesses are available namely Z275 and Z600, indicating the coating weight, including both sides, in grams per square metre. 7 Rainwater Systems Specification, Design & Dimensions The following should be incorporated into the maintenance program:- Gutters, rainwater pipes, outlets and gratings should be inspected and thoroughly cleaned at least once a year. This should occur more frequently if :- The building is in an industrial area with significant discharge of airborne waste (paper, packaging etc) The building is near trees. The building is in an area subject to extremes of temperature. The gutter is equipped with high performance outlets. Maintenance Maintenance of a rainwater system is vitally important, almost as important as the initial design. All work must be carried out by qualified operatives complying with all current legislative safety requirements. A responsible person should be delegated within the building owner s organisation to monitor and ensure that the above processes occur. Failing this an external contractor or consultant should be appointed. The system should be inspected every five years by a specialist contractor or consultant, to check for component decay, damage or unauthorised alteration to the original specification. All maintenance works must be carried out by complying to all current safety legislation. Installation Installation must be carried out by qualified operatives complying with all current legislative safety requirements. Gutters are assembled so there is a joggle at the leading end. Seals must be fitted with care, in clean dry conditions avoiding any tendency to stretch the seal over bends in the profile. Prior to tightening the bolts correct alignment and seating of the gutter on its supports are checked. All bolts are tightened, starting from the centre of the sole working outwards to each side of the profile. Outlet positions, where possible, should be factory installed however if they are cut on site all burrs should be removed to avoid corrosion and ensure adequate surface for sealing. Damage to the gutter surface must be treated and all debris removed from the gutter prior to progressing with other roofing works. Insulation It is normally recommended that gutters have less insulation than the roof to enable prior melting of snow and ice. In practical terms this can be achieved by lowering the overall insulation U value compared with the roof, for example use 0.6 U value for the gutter insulation where the roof has 0.45 U value. 14 Eaves Gutter Eaves constructions utilising an external gutter system are usually based around a purpose designed cold formed eaves member. These sections are formed to the roof pitch of the building, thus ensuring a good bearing surface for the roof and wall panels. In a normal eaves condition the end of the insulated roof panel features a cut back of the insulation to attain a drip edge and accommodate the external gutter detail. In the case of the Ward Roof - Low Pitch or Curved DR1000 panel the standard insulation cut back measurement is 65mm, for Ward Roof - Trapezoidal IP1000 the dimension is 75mm. This dimension provides a practical distance for erecting and fixing the eaves gutter without compromising strength. To maintain continuity of insulation around the eaves member, the wall panel is detailed to form a close joint with the underside of the roof panel. A compressible seal is used at this junction. In order to obtain clean building lines the Streamline range of cladding supported gutters is used. This purpose designed gutter section integrates with the standard verge flashing and preengineered corner units to provide an unbroken shadow line around the roof to wall junction of the building. Constructed in plastisol colour coated steel, the range of roof gutters covers roof slope increments from 2 to 24. The inner lip of the gutter is fixed to the underside of the insulated panel outer skin using 6 fixings per panel, the front lip is supported on arms fitted to the profile corrugations at 1.0 metre centres. The gutter cross section, support arms and pre-formed corner units are manufactured to suit the specific profile dimensions of the Ward roof system being used. The components are joined to the verge flashings by means of pre-formed corner units to form a shadow-line construction around the roof to wall junction of the building. manufactured from 0.7mm thick double sided plastisol coated steel, the range of gutters covers roof slope increments from 2 to 24. The gutter is supported from the roof cladding using support arms sealed and fixed over the corrugations of the roof profile. Support arms may be colour matched to suit the roof sheet or the gutter. Gutter Support Arm GSA Supplied to suit panel profile with predrilled holes for fixing screw location. Gutter Corner Units Gutter corner units form the junction between gutter and verge. They are manufactured to suit increments of roof slope from 2 to 24. Connection is made by means of a butt strap joint detail to the gutter and a minimum 75mm overlap of the verge flashing. Downpipe Lengths Downpipes are available in any length up to 6.0m. Swan necks and shoe details are available as factory manufactured units or may be formed on site using the standard components. Gutter Joints Gutters are available in standard 6.0m lengths and in specified make up lengths up to 6.0m. The butt strap joint is site formed using a silicone mastic seal secured with pop rivets FX17R. Gutter lengths are joined on site by means of a pre-formed gutter section. Joints should occur close to but not at the position of the gutter support arm. To enhance appearance the rivets may be touched in with a colour matched paint. 11:14
16 Downpipe Construction The square downpipe of the Streamline Gutter System is designed to complement all functional and visual aspects of the eaves gutter components and is available in lengths of up to 6.0 metres. The downpipes are 95mm square and constructed from 0.7mm thick, double sided, plastisol coated steel, seam jointed at one corner, which is usually placed away from the line of sight. A range of accessories for fixing the downpipes are manufactured in the same materials. The size of the downpipe is designed to meet the gutter s flow capacity to produce an efficient and practical system. The following recommendations for the spacing of downpipes are based on the guidelines of BS 6367 Code of Practice for Drainage of Roofs and Paved Areas. The rate of rainfall used is 75mm per hour and calculations are on a gutter flow rate of 15 litres per second and a downpipe capacity of 7 litres per second. The distance between downpipes is determined by the least value of the following conditions. Downpipe Brackets The downpipe must be supported at centres not exceeding 3.0 metres. This must be provided within 200mm of the gutter and within 1.0 metre of the base. Two types of bracket are available. SDPB95 is suitable for fixing to profiled wall cladding such as Ward Wall - Profile Rib DR1000W and Ward Wall - Trapezoidal IP1000 sidewalls. This bracket may also be used on flat sidewall cladding. Where a concealed fixing is required to complement the wall cladding, bracket assembly SDPS95 is used. This bracket may only be fixed to flat sidewalls as the Ward Wall Insulated panel range. Downpipe Bracket Options Rivets FX17R Seam Downpipe Base The downpipe may be formed on site to give a shoe for discharge into the ground drainage.
