Christian Keglovits The Güssing Model An example for a sustainable energy supply
Location Burgenland Area (km²) Population District of Güssing Area (km²) 485 Population Town of Güssing Area (km²) 49,3 Population 3.764
Our Güssing
Situation at the end of the 1980s 50 years alongside iron curtain no industry high rate of unemployment 70% commuters high rate of migration small structured agriculture bad traffic infrastructure
The Güssing Model is the strategy of a decentralized local energy production with the existing renewable resources of a region! The Goal: to get independent from fossil energy in order to strengthen the regional added value! This strategy can be adapted individually wherever resources are available.
Milestones in Güssing Since 1990: Energy efficiency measures and beginning with production of heat out of biomass Since 2001: Production of electricity (biomass and photovoltaic) Since 2008: Beginning of important research projects (production of synth. Natural gas and production of synth. Liquid fuels). New research institute! Goal for 2011: Pilot project 2MW demonstration plant -> gasification of waste
The district heating system of Güssing Since 1996: Gradual grid-development Current grid 35km Convincing arguments: No loss of comfort! Stable energy price!
Costs of heating
Parador Parkett
Photovoltaic plant Güssing& Production of photovoltaic cells Since 2004 Capacity: 27,9 kwp Average amount of Energy: ca. 30MWh Since 2008: 140 jobs Invest. 50 Mio Average efficiency of monocrystalline solar cells: 17,5% Annual output: 85MWp
Biomass power plantwood gasification Since 2001 Heat Electricity Synth. Natural Gas (BioSNG) Liquid synth. fuels
Anaerobic digestion plant Strem Since 2004 Heat Electricity Biogas
Methanisation demonstration plant Güssing Since kWh heat and 182 Nm³ BioSNG produced out of 1 ton of wood chips 1Nm³ SNG -> 10kWh
Forschung in Güssing Since 2009 K1-Research Institute Bioenergy Private Non-Profit Research Institute Güssing Energy Technologies GmbH
Out of these resources we are producing Heat, Electricity, synthetic Natural Gas, synth. liquid fuels
Energy balance town of Güssing Total annual demand (2008): heat (33GWh private, 40GWh public + industries) 73 GWh electricity (7GWh Privat, 33,4GWh Öffentl. Geb. + Gewerbe u. Industrie) 40,4 GWh fuels 47GWh Annual production of energy (2008): heat 4 biomass-district heating plants heat private (cockle stoves, pellets, etc) electricity 2 CHP plants Since 2009 Methanisation (Prod. synth. natural gas) projected 51,2GWh 6,5 GWh 19,2GWh 8,4GWh/a Current degree of self sufficiency regarding heat and electricity: regarding private households and public buildings 100% incl. industries and commercials approx. 56%
CO ² Emissions in Güssing CO2 Emissions: 2009: t/a 1996: t/a
The added value For the town of Güssing More than 50 new companies More than new jobs netting 9 Mio. a year Total sales volume of energy 13 Mio. a year (2005) Total wood consumption tons a year For the district of Güssing 45% self sufficiency netting 18 Mio. EURO Potential in case of 100% self sufficiency 37 Mio. EURO
