wind An intelligent way of using the world s endless potential. Wind power with wpd.
we guarantee that wind projects become reality 440 In Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, wind turbines generate a combined nominal output of 9,679 MW, including 440 MW constructed by wpd. 551 In Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, wind turbines generate a combined nominal output of 5,950 MW, including 551 MW constructed by wpd. Limited natural resources, climate change and the need for an independent power supply mean that renewable energy is fast becoming an integral part of the energy mix for tomorrow s world. For more than ten years wpd has been working at the forefront of the wind industry by building more than 1,400 wind turbines and creating more than 600 jobs within our fast-growing company. Ever since the beginnings of the wind industry, wpd has significantly shaped its development and we continue to be the leading innovative driving force in the new fields of offshore and repowering. We re successful because we re dedicated, can draw on a wealth of experience as well as highly skilled and knowledgeable employees. Welcome to wpd! 499 In Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, wind turbines generate a combined nominal output of 4,263 MW, including 499 MW constructed by wpd. 5
There s enormous potential in the air The wind industry is one of the driving forces in our economy. Already the potential that wind offers in terms of generating power is 200 times greater than today s energy consumption on our planet. 460 The wind industry is the driving force behind the economy. Every year, approximately Euro 60 billion is invested in the construction of wind turbines around the world. It s predicted that global investment in renewable energies will increase six-fold to reach Euro 250 billion by 2020 and then nearly double again to approximately Euro 460 billion by Global growth rates of 25 to 30% show that the change is possible. As predicted by the German government, Germany is well on its way to achieving its political target of increasing its use of renewable energies to 35% of its total power consumption by And all over the world, the course is set for growth: China is planning to add another 200 GW to the mix until At the same time, the U.S, as the world s largest energy consumer, increasingly sees climate protection as a call for action. 80 Currently 80% of Germany s wind industry is exported. The technological pole position of German manufacturers and the experience of the developers give the industry an excellent foundation on which to cope with the challenges of booming international markets. 6 7
The energy revolution hasn t just started for us. We re right in the middle of it TWh 2.5 % TWh 5.0 % The portion of the wind energy within the European cumulative power consumption Source: EWEA, TWh 14.3 % Our wind power projects make sure that the change towards renewable energies will become reality. Climate protection and European expansion goals make the growth of wind power a must. wpd has set out a clear plan: we believe that the protection of our climate is vital for our planet and have been strongly pursuing it since We ve completed 160 wind projects in Germany and abroad with a combined power output of 2.1 GW. This has turned our medium-sized company into a key global player in the growing market of wind power. Our ongoing quest for new business segments now puts us in the position of being able to provide the complete value-added chain, from planning through to operation. wpd s diverse range of activities and our financial strength have resulted in consistent positive A-ratings over the years. wpd s young and dynamic team has always understood the importance of using varying market conditions for consistent and sustainable company development. Commitment, passion for the industry and the profound expertise of our 600 employees combine together to make each and every project a huge success. A flat hierarchy and streamlined decision-making processes are the key to maximum flexibility and customised solutions. Excellent knowledge, the ability to get the job done and a wealth of experience make wpd a reliable partner for manufacturers, banks, communities, land owners, project planning companies and investors. 6 Big numbers for the wind industry The wind industry is growing more and more in significance. Global employment figures and the number of gigawatts installed are increasing year by year, reducing CO 2 emissions by millions of tonnes Today, the wind industry employs 500,000 people. In Germany, the number of employees is nearly 100,000, with a continuously rising trend. Roland Berger Strategy Consultants predict that the number of employees in Germany might reach 700,000 by Renewable energies come from regional, decentralised sources. This fact plays an important role for all those countries relying mainly on energy imports from countries outside the EU. Fossil fuels are generally obtained from markets from markets vulnerable to dramatic price fluctuations and political risks. Renewable energies provide a mid-term solution for protecting us against the rising costs of imported energy. And at wpd we believe that adjusting our power production to be 100% renewable is entirely possible One trillion tonnes of CO 2 have been released into the atmosphere since the beginning of industrialisation. Most people today agree that global warming must be kept below 2 C to make sure that the planet survives. In order to prevent any further global warming, a permanent reduction in CO 2 emissions is crucial. In 2010 wind power in Germany reduced CO 2 emissions by nearly 32 million tonnes. Without the use of renewable energy sources, Germany s total CO 2 emissions would be approximately 15% higher
wpd onshore The speed of onshore wind power development over the past 20 years has been truly breathtaking. And wpd s development has been just as impressive. onshore Around the world, wind turbines with a combined nominal output of wpd was founded in 1996 and has since become a leading developer and operator in Germany. It s grown from a two-person business to an international company with over 600 employees. The management s forward-thinking approach to conquering new markets and business sectors has always led to consistent company growth. The key to our success has been the dedication of our employees, their far-reaching experience and their corporate identification with our company. We also owe our success to our exceptional networks and partnerships and close cooperation with local partners in the international markets. Ranked as a premium client of our manufacturers, banks, suppliers and insurance companies, we have developed a top position amongst all relevant competitors. This position is strengthened by our construction expertise, our track record in operating 1.85 GW projects and the prospects of our large international project pipeline. 200 GW have already been constructed. And the trend is rising rapidly. Strong political and social support along with further technological innovations present huge opportunities for harvesting the power offered by the wind. Total onshore output: 2.1 GW installed 7 GWplanned
wpd OFFSHORE Offshore wind farms present both endless opportunities and enormous challenges. Our team of experts is ready to tackle these. offshore Locations off the coast are the ideal environment for multi-megawatt wind turbines. They present us with new opportunities, but also pose us with demanding technical and economical challenges. Since offshore wind farms reach similar dimensions to fossil power plants and, at the same time, produce energy independent of natural resources, at low-risk and free of pollutants, they will, in the future, play one of the key roles in supplying energy. Even though, with the construction of the first wind farms, a great deal of development has been accomplished, the large-scale realization of this great potential for growth still lies ahead. In this entire process, it is necessary to conquer water depths of more than 40 meters, distances to the shore of up to 100 kilometers, complex authorization processes, sophisticated construction logistics, high demand on the technology of the facilities and the operating personnel as well as service and maintenance concepts. wpd, along with its team of specialists, is well prepared to meet these challenges and has forged a strong network, in the crucial offshore markets, directly at the respective sites - both in the planning and also in the service sector. Seven projects with a total of 2,500 MW developed by wpd have already been authorized and will be built in cooperation with financially powerful market players. wpd thus had a substantial share in building the first German commercial offshore wind farm Baltic 1. It is hardly surprising therefore that wpd has hitherto become the leading offshore wind developer in just ten years. In 2010 alone, wpd obtained the authorization for two additional major projects in Sweden and Finland. Altogether, our teams in Germany, Sweden, Finland, France and Italy have been pursuing an offshore-pipeline of about 10 GW. wpd, in alliance with the wpd offshore solutions GmbH, does not only act as a developer, but will emerge as a service provider and implementer. For this kind of industry, wpd offers a unique combination, but it is a state-of-the-art one and trusted by leading European energy providers. Our staff has the experience of building several offshore projects. Following the successful construction of the Baltic 1 project, the wpd offshore solutions team is now working intensely on the realization of its own Butendiek project with 80 turbines just off the coast of Sylt. Total offshore output: 2.8 GW consented 10 GWplanned

We follow the wind from planning through to energy trading With wpd, you ll gain a partner that is going to take care of absolutely everything, from development to construction through to energy trading. Because we select the perfect locations with the greatest wind potential, our wind projects will always achieve optimum results. Eight model projects represent the variety of the various assignments and realisation strategies. ONshore ProjeCtS Just one year from cooperation to completion Klein Bünzow wind farm Year of construction MW No. of turbines 6 Turbine model Enercon E 70 Rami Ramadan Project Manager To construct the Klein Bünzow wind farm, wpd joined forces with a local company in late By coordinating processes, we were able to complete the project just one year later. The approval process, land securing, turbine purchase and the subsequent construction phase all went without a hitch. The cable route on the other hand posed a The cable route crosses a river challenge, as it had to cross the Peene river. However, careful planning allowed us to solve this problem successfully. The wind farm was completed in 2008 and began operating in One wind farm, many concerns Farnstädt wind farm Making projects successful while taking everyone s concerns into consideration Year of construction MW No. of turbines 16 Turbine model Vestas V 90 Carsten Schulz Project Manager In 2004, wpd constructed three 1.5 MW turbines in Farnstädt in partnership with a private provider. In June 2004, wpd took over the planning of 16 more turbines from a small project developer. It took another four years to the start of operation. This included designing the most effective wind farm configuration, signing of numerous utilisation and land use agreements, an extremely complex permit process and the construction of our own electrical substation. It was essential to find a solution that would satisfy everyone involved property owners, the community, authorities, energy providers and the operators of a neighbouring wind farm. The fact that the wind turbines have been operating since October 2007 goes to show just how successful wpd was in handling these tasks
Entering the Croatian market The wind farm was commissioned just eight months after construction Trtar-Krtolin wind farm Dialogue and transparency Château-Porcien wind farm Andreas Chollet Project Manager Year of construction MW No. of turbines 14 Turbine model Enercon E 48 In 2006, wpd started the Trtar-Krtolin project. This was to become Croatia s second wind farm. We began with an intensive project development phase to fulfil international project financing standards. This included the difficult process of entering wind turbines into the Croatian land register. Since Enercon, the turbine manufacturer, was not represented in Croatia, wpd had to organise the import of the wind turbines and customs clearance. wpd staff from the German headquarter worked closely with our Croatian partners to finish the project in eight months. With an average of 2,900 full-load hours, the wind farm has lived up to its high expectations. A series of hurdles with a happy ending Balkum-Thiene wind farm Year of construction MW No. of turbines 12 Turbine model Nordex N 90 Michaela Bruns Project Manager wpd generates environmentally friendly power for more than 14,500 households The Balkum-Thiene project presented numerous challenges. First, the concerns of more than 70 land owners had to be taken into account. This was achieved in part with a site pooling model from which all the land owners are profiting, including those who do not have a turbine constructed on their property. Another unique feature was that farm land consolidation took place during the development and construction phases of the wind farm. Second, there were delays during construction because granates from the Second World War were found just as the access road was being completed and therefore had to be removed. Nevertheless, the Balkum-Thiene wind farm successfully began operation in autumn 2007 and has been generating power for approximately 14,500 households. The arrival of winter leads to some tense moments Mittelhausen wind farm Our first project in France has a high level of local acceptance Year of construction MW No. of turbines 10 Turbine model Enercon E 82 Château-Porcien, the pioneer project in the Ardennes region, was wpd s first French project. Local residents and politicians accepted the wind farm from the beginning because of good communication. Eight public hearings, four community board meetings and a community gathering gave everyone valuable information and contributed to their acceptance of the project. There were a few initial difficulties during construction concerning the Nicolas Ugalde Project Manager harvest period and a slight disruption to a few residents television reception. However, operations are now running smoothly and the residents take pride in the carbonneutral generation of power in their region. No two projects are the same and almost no other wind farm has held as many surprises as Mittelhausen. In addition to the unusually complex property and farming conditions and the initial competition issues, the arrival of winter posed an unexpected challenge during the construction phase. By working closely with the Year of construction MW No. of turbines 6 Turbine model Vestas V 90 We successfully completed this project despite the arrival of Birgit Schneider winter in the Project Manager middle of construction community and frequently holding meetings with all those involved, we were able to overcome all the obstacles. The Mittelhausen wind farm finally began operation and became a home to six turbines that are now turning cheerfully in the stiff breeze

Developing one of the first commercial offshore projects in Germany and providing support throughout the construction phase is a major step for wpd. 288 MW off the coast of Sylt Wind farm Butendiek Being one of the most advanced offshore projects to be realised in German waters, the wind farm Butendiek, located in the North Sea, is a unique project. The project had already been set in motion in 2001 funded by 8, 400 local private investors. wpd took on the project in The proposed location of the wind farm is around 32km west of the island of Sylt in a water depth in the region of 17-22m. 80 wind turbines, with a total capacity of 288 MW, will be erected. With an estimated 250,000 households set to benefit from this supply of green electrcity, it is clear that Butendiek will become a key player in the current energy revolution. Powering the energy revolution with offshore wind energy OUR CONCEPT: A CO 2 -FREE COMPANY Planning and constructing wind farms has already helped us to make a significant contribution to protecting the world s climate. However, improvements are always possible. We don t just protect the climate through our daily business but at wpd we go the extra mile. As proof of our ongoing commitment to the environment we ve recently earned the status of a CO 2 -free company. To achieve this this highly regarded status we first carried out a comprehensive study to calculate the total emissions of all the wpd offices, including emissions from flights, train and car journeys, heating and electricity consumption. The study revealed that wpd emits approximately 1,200 tonnes of carbon Reforestation of the rainforest Bosque los Cimientos, Guatemala A mangrove forest preservation Halwatura, Sri Lanka The Halwatura project is run in partnership with a local foundation, with the aim to purchase an area of 100 hectares of mangrove forest in several phases. Reaching this goal will mean that we ll protect this unique biotope for future generations and prevent drainage and commercial exploitation in the region. The first stage saw the purchase of 30 hectares with the support of the locally based Nagenahiru Foundation. The forest area is offsetting around 1,500 tonnes of CO 2 emissions per annum. dioxide per year, a figure which is constantly increasing due to the company s rapid growth. We then analysed numerous possible projects that would enable us to turn wpd into a carbon-neutral company. Before long, we had two of these projects. The Bosque los Cimientos project is aimed at preserving the Guatemalan rainforest. As well as planting new trees, it also seeks to restore biodiversity and involves the local community in promoting the sustainable use and preservation of the rainforest. Partners in this project are medico international e.v. and a local aid organisation. Every year, the project offsets approximately 300 tonnes of CO 2 emissions
