We re successful because we re dedicated, can draw on a wealth of experience as well as highly skilled and knowledgeable employees. Welcome to wpd! 3

There s enormous potential in the air The wind industry is one of the driving forces in our economy. Already the potential that wind offers in terms of generating power is 200 times greater than today s energy consumption on our planet. 30 Global growth rates of 25 to 30% show that the change is possible. As predicted by the German government, Germany is well on its way to achieving its political target of increasing its use of renewable energies to 35% of its total power consumption by And all over the world, the course is set for growth: China is planning to add another 200 GW to the mix until At the same time, the U.S., as the world s largest energy consumer, increasingly sees climate protection as a call for action. 4

460 The wind industry is the driving force behind the economy. Every year, approximately Euro 60 billion is invested in the construction of wind turbines around the world. It s predicted that global investment in renewable energies will increase six-fold to reach Euro 250 billion by 2020 and then nearly double again to approximately Euro 460 billion by Currently 80% of Germany s wind industry is exported. The technological pole position of German manufacturers and the experience of the developers give the industry an excellent foundation on which to cope with the challenges of booming international markets. 5

The energy revolution hasn t just started for us. We re right in the middle of it. Our wind power projects make sure that the change towards renewable energies will become reality. Climate protection and European expansion goals make the growth of wind power a must. wpd has set out a clear plan: we believe that the protection of our climate is vital for our planet and have been strongly pursuing it since We ve completed about 250 wind projects in Germany and abroad with a combined power output of 2.5 GW. This has turned our medium-sized company into a key global player in the growing market of wind power. Our ongoing quest for new business segments now puts us in the position of being able to provide the complete value-added chain, from planning through to operation. wpd s diverse range of activities and our financial strength have resulted in consistent positive A-ratings over the years. wpd s young and dynamic team has always understood the importance of using varying market conditions for consistent and sustainable company development. Commitment, passion for the industry and the profound expertise of our 860 employees combine together to make each and every project a huge success. A flat hierarchy and streamlined decision-making processes are the key to maximum flexibility and customised solutions. Excellent knowledge, the ability to get the job done and a wealth of experience make wpd a reliable partner for manufacturers, banks, communities, land owners, project planning companies and investors. 6

Grid connection planning Our electrical engineers cooperate with grid operators to develop the optimum grid connection concept. 5. Permit process We organise all necessary surveys, put together the required documentation and follow the whole permit process from start to finish. 10. Business and operations management We guarantee the optimum technical and commercial operation of wind farms throughout their entire operating life. 11. Spot-market sales We develop innovative concepts in order to be an independent power producer and sell energy on the spot-market. 9

Big numbers for the wind industry The wind industry is growing more and more in significance. Global employment figures and the number of gigawatts installed are increasing year by year, reducing CO 2 emissions by millions of tonnes. 100 Renewable energies come from regional, decentralised sources. This fact plays an important role for all those countries relying mainly on energy imports from countries outside the EU. Fossil fuels are generally obtained from markets vulnerable to dramatic price fluctuations and political risks. Renewable energies provide a mid-term solution for protecting us against the rising costs of imported energy. And at wpd we believe that adjusting our power production to be 100% renewable is entirely possible. 10

Today, the wind industry employs 650,000 people. In Germany, the number of employees is about 100,000, with a continuously rising trend. The Global Wind Energy Council predicts that the number of employees worldwide might reach 2.6 million by One trillion tonnes of CO 2 have been released into the atmosphere since the beginning of industrialisation. Most people today agree that global warming must be kept below 2 C to make sure that the planet survives. In order to prevent any further global warming, a permanent reduction in CO 2 emissions is crucial. In 2010 wind power in Germany reduced CO 2 emissions by nearly 40 million tonnes. Without the use of renewable energy sources, Germany s total CO 2 emissions would be approximately 15% higher. 11

onshore Around the world, wind turbines with a combined nominal output of about 280 GW have already been constructed. And the trend is rising rapidly. Strong political and social support along with further technological innovations present huge opportunities for harvesting the power offered by the wind. 12

wpd onshore The speed of onshore wind power development over the past 20 years has been truly breathtaking. And wpd s development has been just as impressive. wpd was founded in 1996 and has since become a leading developer and operator in Germany. It s grown from a two-person business to an international company with over 860 employees. The management s forward-thinking approach to conquering new markets and business sectors has always led to consistent company growth. The key to our success has been the dedication of our employees, their far-reaching experience and their corporate identification with our company. We also owe our success to our exceptional networks and partnerships and close cooperation with local partners in the international markets. Ranked as a premium client of our manufacturers, banks, suppliers and insurance companies, we have developed a top position amongst all relevant competitors. This position is strengthened by our construction expertise, our track record in operating 2 GW projects and the prospects of our large international project pipeline. Total onshore output: 2.5 GW installed 6.7 GWplanned 13

offshore Locations off the coast are the ideal environment for multi-megawatt wind turbines. They present us with new opportunities, but also pose us with demanding technical and economical challenges. 14

wpd OFFSHORE Offshore is a major opportunity as well as a challenge. wpd s experts demonstrate how to develop offshore wind projects successfully. Offshore wind farms are gaining ground as part of the future global energy supply. They reach the dimensions of large-scale power plants, with lower risk, without the use of raw materials and without emitting harmful substances compared to fossil-fuel energy sources. During the process, wpd deals with offshore wind project development and construction issues such as: water depths of more than 40 m, distances to the coast of up to 100 km, complicated permitting processes, challenges during the construction phase as well as sophisticated technology requirements, operations and maintenance, optimizing the excellent wind conditions and staffing a qualified and experienced team. wpd has proven its capacities to meet these challenges through a number of successful projects and has gotten eight projects with a total capacity of 3 MW trough the permitting phase and has strong partners to reach financial close. wpd managed the Baltic 1 project through the construction phase. The project was connected to the grid in 2011 becoming Germany s first commercial offshore wind farm. In just ten years, wpd has become a leader in the European offshore wind sector. In 2012, wpd, with a consortium of partners, won the French tender for offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 1 GW. wpd will also participate in the two upcoming French tenders. Altogether wpd is working on an offshore pipeline of 10 GW in Germany, France, Finland, Sweden, Italy and Denmark. Achim Berge Managing Director wpd offshore Butendiek: 80 wind turbines to be constructed in the North Sea The team is currently working on the development of the 288 MW (80 turbines) Butendiek project in Germany s North Sea. In February 2013, wpd achieved the Euro 1.3 billion financial close with a group of institutional investors and banks. It was a landmark occasion for wpd and for the whole offshore industry. For the first time, wpd will do not only the project management during the construction phase, but also manage the technical and operational management while serving as a shareholder, too. wpd offers a one-stop shop for all phases of the offshore projects a unique and appreciated combination in the offshore sector Total offshore output: 3 GW consented 10 GWplanned 15

Because we select the perfect locations with the greatest wind potential, our wind projects will always achieve optimum results. Eight model projects represent the variety of the various assignments and realisation strategies. 18

ONshore ProjeCtS Hessen s most powerful wind farm Vogelsberg wind farm Year of construction 2012 Nominal output 32.2 MW No. of turbines 14 Turbine model Enercon E 82 Björn Naßler Project Manager Wind energy and woodlands are a good match wpd developed the Mücke-Feldatal-Ulrichstein wind farm in the Vogelsberg region in co-operation with Renertec AG. The park consists of 14 Enercon E 82 E2 turbines. It is 430 meters above sea level. It is the biggest park with the most capacity in the province of Hessen. This project showed that forest and wind energy can go well together. One of the turbines is situated in the marginal area of a forest. To keep the area needed for the construction as small as possible, the rotor blades were installed one by one. Due to this the construction area was one third smaller than what is usually needed for the construction of a turbine. The part of the forest that was chopped down for the time of construction has been afforested elsewhere due to sustainability. One wind farm, many concerns Farnstädt wind farm Making projects successful while taking everyone s concerns into consideration Year of construction 2007 Nominal output 32 MW No. of turbines 16 Turbine model Vestas V 90 Carsten Schulz Project Manager In 2004, wpd constructed three 1.5 MW turbines in Farnstädt in partnership with a private provider. In June 2004, wpd took over the planning of 16 more turbines from a small project developer. It took another four years to the start of operation. This included designing the most effective wind farm configuration, signing of numerous utilisation and land use agreements, an extremely complex permit process and the construction of our own electrical substation. It was essential to find a solution that would satisfy everyone involved property owners, the community, authorities, energy providers and the operators of a neighbouring wind farm. The fact that the wind turbines have been operating since October 2007 goes to show just how successful wpd was in handling these tasks. 19

A lot of rock removed in Croatia Ponikve wind farm Andreas Chollet Project Manager Year of construction 2012 Nominal output 36.8 MW No. of turbines 16 Turbine model Enercon E 70 In the spring of 2012, the Croatian government made some changes to their regulations to support additional investments in renewable energy. wpd will continue to help Croatia meet these renewable energy goals. The Ponikve wind farm is wpd s third park in Croatia. Ponikve is situated approximately 60 km north-west of Dubrovnik. It produces ecofriendly energy for 60,000 households. wpd s construction team describes the project as one of the most interesting. The team had to deal with a large number of rocks, which had to be demolished. Additionally, wpd had to confront poisonous snakes, storms, freezing rain and a lot of snow. Still, wpd managed to finish the wind farm on time. One of the most exciting projects Successfull project purchase in France Mont d Ergny wind farm The wind farm Mont d'ergny, located in the region Nord-Pas de Calais of nothern France, is producing power since October Bought as a turn-key project, wpd is operating four wind turbines of the type E 70 (2.3 MW). With this extension wpd has currently installed six wind farms in France, generating 67.7 MW. wpd windmanager is in charge of the technical and commercial operation of these sites. Planned by partner - finalised by us Nicolas Ugalde Project Manager Year of construction 2012 Nominal output 9.2 MW No. of turbines 4 Turbine model Enercon E 70 20

A series of hurdles with a happy ending Balkum-Thiene wind farm Year of construction 2007 Nominal output 27.6 MW No. of turbines 12 Turbine model Nordex N 90 Michaela Bruns Project Manager wpd generates environmentally friendly power for more than 14,500 households The Balkum-Thiene project presented numerous challenges. First, the concerns of more than 70 land owners had to be taken into account. This was achieved in part with a site pooling model from which all the land owners are profiting, including those who do not have a turbine constructed on their property. Another unique feature was that farm land consolidation took place during the development and construction phases of the wind farm. Second, there were delays during construction because granates from World War Two were found just as the access road was being completed and therefore had to be removed. Nevertheless, the Balkum-Thiene wind farm successfully began operation in autumn 2007 and has been generating power for approximately 14,500 households. The arrival of winter leads to some tense moments Mittelhausen wind farm Year of construction 2010 Nominal output 12 MW No. of turbines 6 Turbine model Vestas V 90 We successfully completed this project despite the arrival of winter in the middle of construction Birgit Schneider Project Manager No two projects are the same and almost no other wind farm has held as many surprises as Mittelhausen. In addition to the unusually complex property and farming conditions and the initial competition issues, the arrival of winter posed an unexpected challenge during the construction phase. By working closely with the community and frequently holding meetings with all those involved, we were able to overcome all the obstacles. The Mittelhausen wind farm finally began operation and became a home to six turbines that are now turning cheerfully in the stiff breeze. 21

Offshore-Projects Green power for households Baltic 1 wind farm off the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Year of construction 2011 Nominal output 48.3 MW No. of turbines 21 Turbine model Siemens 2.3 MW Martin Lehnhoff wpd offshore solutions Managing Director From the planning to the powering stage, all completed with strong team spirit wpd developed this wind farm in close cooperation with the local community, technical planning authorities, state government and with the support of the local economy. The work has been successfully completed with construction and commissioning in A wpd team was working closely with a local manufacturer in constructing the optimum foundation to compensate for the tricky interaction of ground conditions, wind, waves and the weight of the turbines. Developing one of the first commercial offshore projects in Germany and providing support throughout the construction phase is a major step for wpd. We were able to use the experiences we made in the past for the Butendiek project that we are currently developing. 498 MW in the English Channel Fécamp offshore wind farm Start of construction 2015/2016 Nominal output 498 MW No. of turbines 83 Turbine model Alstom-Haliade 150 Vincent Balès wpd Offshore France Managing Director In 2008, wpd initiated the development of the Fécamp project in close cooperation with the local communites of Fécamp, Étretat and the local fishermen. wpd conducted the environmental studies according to the highest standards important because the wind farm is located in a European nature protection area called Natura Fécamp is a good example of successfull local cooperations For the first tender in 2011, the French government selected the area. wpd partnered with EDF, DONG Energy and ALSTOM. In 2012, this consortium won the Fécamp project and the Courseulles project, a 450 MW project located in the Normandy. wpd is focused currently on the approval process and aims to start construction of Fécamp in 2015/

OUR CONCEPT: A CO 2 -FREE COMPANY Planning and constructing wind farms has already helped us to make a significant contribution to protecting the world s climate. However, improvements are always possible. We don t just protect the climate through our daily business but at wpd we go the extra mile. As proof of our ongoing commitment to the environment we ve earned the status of a CO 2 -free company. To achieve this this highly regarded status we first carried out a comprehensive study to calculate the total emissions of all the wpd offices, including emissions from flights, train and car journeys, heating and electricity consumption. The study revealed that wpd emits approximately 1,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, a figure which is constantly increasing due to the company s rapid growth. We then analysed numerous possible projects that would enable us to turn wpd into a carbon-neutral company. Before long, we had two of these projects. Reforestation of the rainforest Bosque los Cimientos, Guatemala The Bosque los Cimientos project is aimed at preserving the Guatemalan rainforest. As well as planting new trees, it also seeks to restore biodiversity and involves the local community in promoting the sustainable use and preservation of the rainforest. Partners in this project are medico international e.v. and a local aid organisation. In 2012, the project offset approximately 470 tonnes of CO 2 emissions. A mangrove forest preservation Halwatura, Sri Lanka The Halwatura project is run in partnership with a local foundation, with the aim to purchase an area of 100 hectares of mangrove forest in several phases. Reaching this goal will mean that we ll protect this unique biotope for future generations and prevent drainage and commercial exploitation in the region. The first stage saw the purchase of 30 hectares with the support of the locally based Nagenahiru Foundation. The forest area is offsetting around 1,500 tonnes of CO 2 emissions per annum. 23
