Program 1. How we work with sustainability 2. About DTU 3. Policy 4. Strategy 5. Targets for 2015: Energy and waste 6. Waste target what did we do? 7. Questions 2
1. How we work with sustainability Teach at cources Coordinate networks of ambassadors Make campaigns and events aimed at staff and students Deliver cases to students Share knowledge and find new sustainable solutions Give advice to project managers Encourage inspire and motivate 3
2. About DTU A techinal university squaremeter 5800 man year staff, employees & Ph.D s > students 4
Program 1. How we work with sustainability 2. About DTU 3. Policy 4. Strategy 5. Targets for 2015: Energy and waste 6. Waste target what did we do? 7. Questions 5
We share a challenge!...? What? We share a passion for sustainability? - and therefor also a challenge How do we implement as much sustainability as possible? 6
I am lucky!... -Because the board and directorate at DTU are concious about sustainability and want us to make a difference. This makes my job easier 7
3. Policy on sustainability In the summer of 2011 the directorate enacted a policy about sustainability at DTU. Rector Anders Bjarklev expressed 3 main goals: Sustainable university Innovative university International techical top-class university 8
Topics in the policy 2011: First edition - Reduce DTU s climate foot print - Sustainability must be looked at as an entity in Facility Management - All employes must show common responsibility and sustainable behaviour 2014: New topics added - Boost environment in procurement - Minimize ITequipment that is turned on without need - Sustainable internal transport (bicycles) and virtual meetings - Biodiversity 9
4. DTU strategy There is an emphasis on sustainability in DTU s strategy DTU s vision involves the University acknowledging its role as a driving force in the technical and the natural sciences for Danish society and taking on responsibility for supporting sustainability as a national capability ( ) DTU s study programmes will be designed to ensure that sustainability is an integrated part of all courses. Similarly, all students will complete programme components intended to boost skills in innovation and entrepreneurship /11/
5. Targets for 2015: Energy and waste DTU has, as one of the few universities in Denmark, incorporated environmental goals into the development contract with the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education. DTU is therefore committed to: Reduce the energy consumption per full-time equivalent by 15% from To recycle 40% of selected fractions of the waste in
Energy target: Results 12
Focus on Proces Energy Percent Energy Management based on need and not a 24/7-365 calender. DTU is engaged in several large construction projects coming up, with emphasis on lab buildings.
Big potential for saving energy 14
Waste target: Results 15
6. Waste target what did we do? Analysis of general waste New fraction: Organic waste Waste responsibles at all departments Design pictograms Make guides Campaigns Communication materials 16
Analysis of general waste We needed to know where the biggest potential for more recycling was. Results In 1, tonnes we made of waste an analysis per day of random samples Every day of the we general send more waste than at one our tonne of biggest recyclable campus waste area, for Lyngby incineration Campus. because it has not been sorted correctly Organic waste Or 6000 apples Paper Or 1300 newspapers 17
New fraction: Organic waste The analysis showed a big potential for separating organic waste. Therefore we made a pilot project at one department and in one canteen. Today 23 departments and all canteens separate organic waste. We offer them: Bin for organic waste Signs og guides A presentation for the department 18
Waste responsibles at all departments We can t change the behaviour of the whole university ourselves. Therefore we made a network of waste responsibles one for each department, or even better each building. We made the dictorate demand that all departments should assign a local waste responsible. We keep them updated with: Network meetings Newsletters 19
Design pictograms To make it easier to separate waste we designed pictograms. 20
Campaigns about recycling 21
