4 IRAN Snapshot ENERGY ELECTRICITY Electricity consumption Iran's increasing domestic demand for electricity has created supply shortfalls during times of peak energy demand. Iran recently increased electricity prices, which is a component of its energy subsidy reform, in hopes of limiting demand growth. The government hopes that the price increase will ease consumption growth and pressure on its generation system, particularly during peak demand times. Nonetheless, Iran's electricity consumption is expected to continue to grow, and to be met by new generation from natural gas, nonhydro renewable resources, and nuclear power. Electricity from hydroelectric plants Electricity from nuclear fuels 5% 3% Electricity exports 11 billion kwh Electricity from other renewable sources >1% 2012 est.
